Chapter 2

Matt's POV

I watched as Anna walked away from where I stood. The almost accident made me smile and wince at the same time. My phone had dropped as I tried to connect it to the car's hands-free holder. I had picked it up quickly but then by the time I looked up, I saw her in the way.

I mentally froze but my reflexes took over as I honked and pushed down on the break. I was so close to hitting her. It took me a moment but I finally got out of the car. I walked to the front where she stood with her eyes closed in fear. I had been both scared and anxious.

Five months ago. That was how long I had taken notice of her. At first, I hadn't been sure if she'd been working at the gym for longer. But after a conversation with Jim, I confirmed that she had been working for just that long.

She had an air about her that reached out to me. The way she held her head high but spoke politely. I hate to admit that I watched her more times than I care to count while she worked.

But then it hit me that she said she was heading to work which made me frown.

I took a deep breath and walked back to my car while sneaking glances at her as she walked down the street. Without a second's thought, or considering where I was meant to be heading, I drove towards her. When I came closer to her, I wound down the passenger's window and leaned away from my seat.

"Hey," I called out to her,

She did a double-take before coming to a stop. She looked at me like she couldn't believe that I had followed her.

"Hi?"

"Can I give you a ride somewhere?"

"Uh, no, I'm good." She said looking unsure, "I'm just heading to the next block."

"Oh?" He waited for her to go on,

"Is it somewhere I know?" He asked when she didn't offer more information,

"Maybe not." She said,

"Try me." I knew there was no way I would know the place. I lived and worked on the other side of town. I only came to this side of town because of the gym.

"Kat's." She said, "It's a café right on the next block."

"Oh."

"So, I can walk. But thank you." She said,

"See you around, Anna."

She gave a small smile before she went on her way.

Anna's POV

I pushed the door and walked into Kat's.

Katherine, my best friend and the owner of Kat's looked up from behind the counter where she worked.

"Belle" She called,

The café was not open yet, so there were no customers.

"You're late."

"I'm sorry. I almost got run over."

"What?" She looked at me with wide eyes, "When? How?"

"It's ok, I'm fine," I said as I joined her behind the counter to help,

She looked at me from head to toe,

"Are you sure?"

"Uh, I'm standing right in front of you. So, yea, I'm sure." I took the clean cloth from her and continued the task she'd started,

Kat suddenly hugs me and I'm so stunned at the unexpected display of affection,

"I'm glad you're alright." She sighs,

"Yea, me too."

Kat pulls back,

"Please be careful."

"I always am." I went back to cleaning the counter.

The day went by slowly as customers slowly came in and out. But when lunchtime came, time went by so fast I was surprised at the time when we were done. Just a couple more hours and I would have to head back to the gym to clean up.

The store doorbell rang and as I looked up to welcome the customer, I froze. He smiled when his gaze landed on me. I felt Kat's presence as he headed towards me.

"Who is that gorgeous man and what the heck is he doing in my café?"

I wasn't able to answer them before he approached us and stood on the other side of the counter.

"Hey." His gaze was focused on me,

"H-hi."

Our gazes were locked and neither of us seemed to want to look away.

"Hello?" Kat called beside me, snapping me out of whatever haze I was in.

"Hi." Matt returned her greeting before returning his gaze back to me,

"What can I get you?"

"A date with you would be nice."

No way he said that.

I thought as my heart skipped a beat.

"Yes."

I looked at Kat who'd answered on my behalf. She gave me a looked that said: I would kill you before you get a chance to say no.

"She would love to."

Matt smiled at her,

"As much as I like that answer, I would prefer if she accepted willingly."

I looked at him uncertain about what this was. My whole day has been one big dream. It started off pretty normal but him almost running me down and coming into the café now are just moments in life that seem impossible to believe.

"We've got a customer." Kat pulled away, "You give the man an answer and I'll attend to our customer."

Kat left her alone and Matt had her undivided attention.

"I don't understand."

"I'm a man who likes a woman and wants to get to know her better." He said,

"You like me." I said, "Is this some sort of prank with your friends at the gym, cause I'll pass."

"Hey, hey, slow down. This isn't a prank. And I don't have friends at the gym." He frowned, "Why would you think that?"

"I would bring out the charts and explain the whole class system but I'm sure you already know about it."

He looked disappointed,

"The girl I see every day at the gym didn't look like the type to judge."

"I'm not judging." I felt like I had been slapped, "I'm just stating the obvious."

Matt sighed,

"If I showed up here without my suit and I was just your everyday guy that shows up here frequently, would you go out with me then?"

I shrugged,

"Maybe."

"Then what's wrong with going out with me?"

"Nothing."

"Is it because you don't like me?"

"I don't know you well enough."

"So, get to know on the date."

I smiled to myself at the three-sixty. I took a deep breath and slowly nodded,

"Alright."

His brows furrowed,

"You sound like you're being held at gunpoint."

I smiled,

"I would love to go out with you."

"Much better." He smiled, "Where should I pick you up tomorrow?"

I wrote down my address on a piece of paper and gave it to him.

"See you tomorrow, Anna."

"See you." I felt my racing heart start to calm as he walked out of the café.

The next day, after work at Kat's, I went to clean the gym before I went home. I had barely been at home for five minutes when the doorbell rang.

"Coming" I went to open the door and saw him standing there looking so gorgeous, "Some of us close late."

"And some of us are hungry," He smiled that sexy wicked smile of his, "Not going to let me in?"

"Sorry, come in." He entered and we both went to the sitting area, "Have a seat."

He took a seat and looked at me.

"I just got in and you just got back from work," I said,

"I can see and I know. Your point being?"

"You should have given us thirty minutes to settle before our date."

"Right. But I'm here now."

"I'll have to freshen up first."

"Take all the time you need."

"Good. Do you want anything before I leave you?"

"No, I'm good."

"Great. I'll be right back."

I went upstairs into my room and took a quick shower. Went to my closet and picked a pair of jeans and a top, not the cream top, I put it on. I dried my hair with a towel and went downstairs with a not so damp hair.

"Ready?"

He looked at me, surprised "That was fast."

"Yeah, I don't like wasting time."

"Noted." He smiled as he got up from the sofa,

I took my purse and went to the door where he waited with his gaze on me.

"Your hair's wet." He said when I reached him,

"Didn't have time to dry it."

"You'll catch a cold."

"Not if it's a norm."

He didn't look like he liked it but he nodded. We walked out of my apartment and I locked the door. We went down the flight of stairs to where his car was parked. He opened the door for me and I got in.

"Thank you," I said as I got in

He shut the door and walked round to his side and got in. He drove to wherever we were going to have the date. A restaurant, his apartment, wherever it was going to be, I feel very nervous. It has been so long since I went on a date.

My phone rang and I frowned when I saw the caller's ID. I answered after the second ring.

"Dr. Adam?"

"Belle, they're threatening to cut her off if you don't pay up."

I swallowed as my heart grew heavy,

"I'm trying Dr. Adam. I'll do it this week"

"Okay." He sounded unsure,

"How is she?" I managed to ask,

"No difference."

"It's been six months," I could feel Matt's gaze on me "Why isn't anything changing?"

Dr. Adam sighed,

"I don't know, Belle. Every patient is different. Everything looks good medically, but waking up is up to her now."

I took a slow and deep breath and nodded but remembered he couldn't see me,

"Okay. Thank you."

"Anytime, Belle. Goodnight."

"Goodnight," I said and hung up.

Matt still glanced at me but, thankfully, said nothing. I started to doubt this whole date but that would invite questions that I wasn't ready for, yet.

God help me.

I sent a quick prayer to the Father.
