Chapter 5: Safe at last
I stared deeply at Spring' s brown fur coat, then into her beautiful blue eyes. She had the same authority and power as mom. The thought of her brought tears to my eyes. Immediately I pushed the thought away knowing I had to get us both to safety.
We were right there at a hill. At that hill the smells were so strong and overwhelming I couldn't take it anymore. I began to break out into a full on sprint. But I stopped just in time for Spring to catch up. Up front on the door was a sheet of paper. I didn't know it, but it read: MISSING : Julien Fargrow
AGE : 14
HEIGHT : 5ft 6in
LAST SEEN : Hiking in the mountains

I figured it was talking about me only because I saw a photo of me when we were about to leave for the trip. I didn't appear happy. I tried look that way to show I meant well. But even I can't fool myself into believing that photo.
For a second there, I can't believe it's me. Judging by what I saw, the photo indicated to me they knew I was missing. Which meant they probably searched for me during whatever amount of time I was missing. Evidently, it's been more than a day. My whole family probably searched. But how can I tell them that I'm okay. I'm a wolf puppy, how can I tell them? How can I prove it's truely me? Wait, they know I'm missing? They actually care? "Luke, snap out of it. You've been standing there for the longest. What's wrong?"asked Spring with concern in her voice. "Nothing Spring, I just remembered something." I say. "Tell me about it bro, I'm listening ." she says. Was she serious? She can't be right? When have I ever been asked to tell my side of the story? Never!
Finally, I get to explain something for once. So I told her everything. The hike, my previous life, loneliness, the bite, my transformation. All the way up to now. She listened to everything.
Even my plan on how to get us safe. It's like she had all of the time in the world. And she did. Spring listened. She actually listened. This made me feel safe. but now it was time to get serious our mission was to get to my great grandfather before who knows what will happen.
So I head inside with Spring trailing behind. We have to creep past the dining room because everybody was eating dinner quietly. It was an eerie silence that's extremely rare amongst the family. But because they think I'm gone, maybe even dead. They don't know that I'm right there, staring at them in disbelief. Are they truely silent? That's not good at all.
I have to continue. Spring went on ahead without me to the stairs. But I forgot to mention to her how creaky the old stairs were. Surprisingly, not one step made even a sound. Now, it's my turn. Hesitant at first I slowly but surely sneak up the stairs who didn't seem to like me at all. Everywhere I move only makes my condition worse.
By the time I clambered to the top Spring was impatiently wagging her tail waiting. I would've gotten there faster, but it would've raised some suspicions within the family.
As soon as we got to great grandfather's room "Come in child, In know why you're here."said a voice from inside the room. Nope, that doesn't sound creepy at all. The two of us walk in to see my great grandfather almost ready to hug my heaf off. But he knew how gentle and fragile I was and instead he smiled. "This must be Spring. Ahhh, wonderful name you gave your sister." he continued. Still, no that's not creepy at all. "Can you help us understand why this is happening?" I ask. "But of course my dear child. Anything for my great grandson. You see, your father and I were partners back in the day. He told me about you. Years later you were born. I gave you special qualities that will save, ssss.... save GASP!"he stops. There's a tiny dart in the back of his neck. It's in there deep. Just like that my great grandfather falls with a loud thud. There were footsteps coming. Screams. More darts flew. I had to duck as one whizzed past my ear. Great, so much for answers and safe at last. This really is a turn of terrible luck for me. Now Spring is with me.
What does she do? Stare death in the eye. It's freaking me out. She just stood there tall and proud like nothing is happening. Doesn't she see the darts flying through the window? This gal has a death wish.
By the time we got back down stairs the damage was catastrophic. But something weird did happen though. I stare in disbelief at my adopted mom. She seems to recognize me. "I knew you'd come back Jjjulien. I *GASP * A,always said you were special. Heh heh, we had a good *COUGH * run son. I, I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier about you. You were born a powerful little hero." She says.
I can tell she's dying. She's barely breathing. She knew and didn't tell me? Why? "You were meant to be a leader. You'll do great things. " she continued coughing uncontrollably. Then one last one thing"Ttake this, you'll need this." She said. She handed me a book? What was I going to do with this? Before I could ask her anything she died. I stood right there crumbling to the ground. Choking back tears. She just handed a puppy a book.
I can't read anymore. Let alone barely carry it. I lick her face trying to bring life back to her. No use and I knew it. "Who did this! Who did this!" I bark angrily. So angrily that I couldn't take it anymore.
