Chapter 4: Escape to safety

"Sis, footsteps! We gotta run." I whispered to my sister . It came out more like desperate whimpers than silent barks. She got the idea though. We start from trots to full on sprints. But no matter what we do we can't shake the blood hounds Hot on our trail.

Until, we come across a river. It looks calm but don't be fooled. Its current is swift and strong. The crossing is a few yards wide. "What do we do sis? It's a dead end." I say with a shaky voice. "We cross Luke, what else?" said my sister. Before I could open my mouth to argue it seems too late for us. I can see flashlights. They're right there behind   us, then the dream comes rushing  toward me. That man, it's him.  He's even scarier in real life. That same grin appeared on his face. It was evil, ugly, and if looks could kill, I'd be murdered. "You gave us quite the run little ones. I'd like to thankyou for the little exercise.  Fun's over now." he says in such a scary voice that I could've just died of a heart attack right then and there. He goes to grab my sister by the neck. I'm in horror as she chokes trying to wiggle free from his deadly grasp. I had to do something. So I did do something. A low growl forced itself up my throat just before she was put in the cage. "Whoa ,don't bite me little guy. I'm  just here to give you a new home."said  the man with one of those looks of amusement. I knew he was lying. That made me angrier. I wasn't going  to go down without a fight.

I bark furiously at him, his hand inches slowly toward me until he got too close. Almost as if to pet me. "Big mistake." I thought to myself. I let him have it. Crunch! Bones snap as I bite deeply into his hand. The man forgot to lock the door. Leaving my sister to escape easily. One man was finally brave enough to to grab a big ripholt from an army fatigue truck. Too late for him. The both of us were headed straight for the river.

As predicted it was strong and swift. One wrong move would sweep us down stream. The water felt like being pelted with a pressure washer's spray . It was cold, slippery, and hurt like crazy. But we pushed on. It was not until we barely got to the other side that I was able to relax. For beyond this river was dense forest filled with familiar smells. Old home. The Oregon place where my greatgrandfather should explain everything. He can help us.

On the way through the forest I began to ask"what's your name sis?" She thought about it for a long time. For a second there I thought she'd never say any thing then she finally said" I don't know what my name is." How about Spring." I said. "Spring, sure!" she responds with glee There you have it, her name's Spring. We walk fo quite some time until I spotted something familiar. It's the lodge! My family, we're saved.
