Chapter 3: The Arena

Y/N's P.O.V

Today is the day Korra starts her Airbending training.

Once she's mastered Airbending, she'll have mastered all four elements.

Right now I'm with her and dad.

She's wearing an Airbender outfit like all Avatar's have worn during Airbending training.

Tenzin: So, my mother has informed me that you've never been able to Airbend before.

Korra sighs

We then stop and turn to her.

Korra: Yeah, but I don't know why. The other elements came so easy to me, but every single time I've tried Airbending... nothing.

Dad steps forward and rolls down her sleeves.

Tenzin: That's perfectly alright. We just need to be patient. Often the element that's most difficult for the Avatar to master, is the one most opposite to the Avatar's personality.

Y/N: He's right. For grandpa Aang it was Earthbending.

Korra: Well, I'm about as opposite an Airbender as you can get.

Y/N: You'll do great, Korra.

She smiles.

Korra: Thanks.

I look to dad.

Y/N: Dad, I gotta head into the city for a few hours. I'll be back soon.

Tenzin: Alright. Have fun.

Korra steps forward.

Korra: Wait, you're not staying?

Y/N: Don't worry, I'll be back. Just gotta help out a couple friends. You got this.

I hold her hand for a moment before leaving.

I head to the dock to get to Republic City.

(Two hours later)

After helping out my friends in the city, I come back to the island.

I head to my room and see Korra.

Y/N: Hey, Korra. How was training?

Korra: Uh, harder than I thought.

Y/N: Oh, I'm sorry. Don't worry though. You'll get it.

Korra: Thanks. I could use all the support I can get right now.

Y/N: Hey, what's going on? I can tell something's up.

Korra: All I wanna do is leave the island and go to the arena to watch a Pro-Bending match, but your dad won't let me.

Y/N: Really? That sucks.

Korra: Yeah, but he's your dad. You have any advice on how to crack his no code?

Y/N: I've been trying to pick that lock since I was seven. So, if you figure it out, how about you let me know, yeah?

She laughs.

Korra: You got it. Well, I better get back to training. See ya.

Y/N: Okay, bye. I'll join when I can.

After that I head to my room.

(The next day)

Today's training didn't go well as Korra can't seem to get Airbending.

I know she's frustrated with that and not being allowed to leave the island.

So, I have something to cheer her up.

I go to her room and knock on the door.

Korra opens the door.

Korra: Hey, Y/N. What's up?

Y/N: We're sneaking out. You and me. Let's go.

Korra: Seriously, Y/N?

Y/N: Yeah. We used to do in the South Pole when we were kids and I'd visit you.

Korra: True.

She walks out and closes the door.

Korra: Where we going?

Y/N: Follow me. We're getting out using a place not even the White Lotus know about.

We then sneak off.

(Thirty minutes later)

Korra and I make it to the Pro-Bending arena.

We walk around backstage and Korra is in awe at this place.

Korra: Thank you so much, Y/N. This is awesome.

Y/N: Thought you'd like it.

Korra: How'd you get us back here, anyway?

Y/N: My friends are on one of the team's.

???: Hey, Y/N!

I turn to see Bolin coming over.

Y/N: Bolin!

He and I clapse hands and hug.

Bolin: You got here just in time, man. The match is about to start.

Y/N: Told you I'd be here.

I step away.

Y/N: Bolin, this is Korra. My friend from the South Pole. Korra, this is Bolin. He plays for the Fire Ferrets.

The two shake hands.

Bolin: Nice to meet you.

Korra: You too.

Bolin: Come on. It's time to go.

Korra, Bolin and I go to the changing room.

We get there and Korra immediately runs to the side and looks out at the arena.

Korra: Whoa. Unbelievable.

Bolin: She's a fan of Pro-Bending, huh?

Y/N: Oh, yeah.

Just then Mako comes in.

He complains about Bolin and I bringing Korra back here.

Y/N: Korra, this is Mako, Bolin's brother. Mako, this is Korra.

Korra steps forward.

Korra: Mako. I've heard you play on the radio.

Mako: Come on, guys. Let's get out there.

He walks past Korra.

Korra: Okay then. I guess I'll meet him later.

Bolin: Sorry about that. Mako can be like that sometimes. You'll get used to it.

Y/N: He's right.

Bolin: Well, gotta go. Wish me luck. Not that I'll need it.

The Fire Ferrets walk out.

Korra: Good luck. Knock 'em out.

The Fire Ferrets are going up against the Tiger-Dillos.

After a few minutes the Ferrets win the match thanks to Mako.

They come back over to us.

Bolin: So, what'd you think, Korra? Bolin's got some skills, huh?

Korra: What did I think?! That was amazing. I've been immersed in bending my whole life, but I've never learned to move like that. It's like there's a whole new style here. Could you maybe show me a few tricks?

Bolin: Yeah, sure.

Mako: Right now? Come on, bro.

Bolin: Just ignore him. Yeah, I can show you the basics. I'm just not sure how my Earthbending would translate to your Waterbending, but we'll figure it out.

Korra: Won't be a problem. I'm actually a Earthbender.

Bolin: You are?

Y/N: She is.

Korra: Yeah, I'm a Waterbender and I'm also an Firebender.

Bolin: Okay, I'm confused.

We look at each other.

Korra: Should we tell him?

Y/N: No. Give it a second, he'll figure it out.

Mako: You're the Avatar and I'm an idiot.

Korra: Both are true.

Bolin: No way. The Avatar!

Mako: Y/N, why didn't you tell us you were friends with the Avatar?

Y/N: I didn't think you'd believe me unless you met her yourselves.

Mako: Good point.

After that we go the gym, so Bolin can show Korra his techniques.

I get the feeling she'll pick 'em up pretty quickly.
