Chapter 24: Trip To The South Pole
Y/N's P.O.V
So today Mako, Bolin and I are going with Korra and Unalaq to the South Pole.
That's where Unalaq wants to start Korra's spiritual training.
He even offered to train me too once he's trained Korra. Apparently he can sense the spiritual energy coming off me.
Right now we're packing up and are about to leave. Korra and I are putting gear on Naga's back.
Korra: Didn't you say Bolin was coming too?
I look at her.
Y/N: Well, that's what Mako told me. It doesn't matter, I can't worry about that. I have to make sure you have everything you need for a safe trip.
She smiles.
Korra: Thanks, Captain Expedition. I'll be fine.
Y/N: I know, but I'll feel alot better knowing that you'll be safe.
Korra: You're cute when you're worried.
I smile.
Y/N: Stop it.
Just then we turn to see Tonraq pull up on a snow speeder.
Unalaq goes over to him.
Unalaq: Tonraq, what do you want?
Tonraq: I heard you're taking Korra to the South Pole. I'm coming too.
Unalaq: Absolutely not. You're a distraction to Korra and a hindrance to what needs to be done.
Tonraq: My daughter isn't going without me. She needs someone to look out for her.
Korra and I ride up to them on Naga.
Korra: No, I don't. Dad, why do you always think you know what's best for me?
Unalaq: Because he's misguided. The sad truth is it's men like your father who have put the Spirit World out of balance. He's ignored my warnings in the past and hasn't learned since.
Korra: What happened in the past?
Tonraq: It doesn't matter. What matters is the Everstorm.
Y/N: What's an Everstorm? I've never heard of it.
Tonraq: It's a massive blizzard that's battered the South Pole for decades.
He looks at Unalaq.
Tonraq: I'm coming, unless you think you can stop me.
The two have a stare down until Bolin shows up on a snow speeder with a sidecar.
Bolin: Check it out. I'm travelling in style.
Mako: Where'd you get the ride?
Bolin: Varrick. He's awesome. He also gave me this fancy snowsuit. It's inflatable with an internal heater, emergency beacon and a food ration pouch. I mean if I get lost I can survive in this for at least a month.
After all that we leave and head for the South Pole.
(Five hours later)
It's starting to get dark and we haven't made it to the South Pole yet.
I'm still on Naga's back with Korra and we have Wolf walking alongside us.
We stop next to Unalaq.
Korra: So once we get to the South Pole, then what happens?
Unalaq: You will open an ancient Spirit Portal.
Korra: I'm sorry, what now?
Unalaq: At the South Pole there's a portal that connects our world to the Spirit World. But it has long been closed.
Y/N: And that's why the evil Spirits are attacking?
Unalaq: There are no evil Spirits, Air Master Y/N. All spirit's have light and dark in them. But when they're unbalanced the darkness takes over. If you can open the portal in time, balance will be restored.
Korra: What do you mean, "in time?"
Unalaq: There's a reason the Glacier Spirit's Festival ends on the Winter Solstice. That's when the Spirit World and our world are close together. Only then can the Avatar open the portal.
Y/N: Do think it can still be opened after being closed for so many years?
Unalaq: I do. Korra is strong enough to open the portal.
Korra: Winter Solstice is tomorrow.
Unalaq: Exactly. And we can't afford to wait another year.
After that we continue on towards the South Pole.
Both Wolf and Naga start growling.
Y/N: Easy, boy. What is it?
Korra: Easy, Naga.
We can then see figures coming towards us.
Bolin: What are those?
Korra: Dark Spirit's.
Before anything could happen the spirit's disappear.
Tonraq: Let's keep moving. We have to find a safe place to set up camp for the night.
Tonraq speeds off and we follow him.
(Thirty minutes later)
We've now set up canp in a small cave.
Mako creates a fire with Firebending and I throw wood onto it to keep it going.
I sit down next to Korra as she looks at Unalaq.
Korra: Uncle, why do you think the Dark Spirit's are following us?
Bolin: Can we not talk about Dark Spirit's please?
Mako: My brother doesn't like ghost stories.
Eska: Don't worry. I will protect you, my feeble Turtle-duck.
Bolin: Thank you.
Unalaq: Sadly, this isn't a ghost story. This is real.
Bolin gasps.
Unalaq: The spirit's are angry because he's here.
He's looking at Tonraq.
Unalaq: Korra, haven't you ever wondered how your father ended up in the South Pole? Why he's never taken you to visit his homeland in the North?
Tonraq: Unalaq, this is not the time.
Unalaq: You're right. You should've told her a long time ago.
We all look at Tonraq.
Korra: Told me what?
Tonraq: I left the North Pole because... I was banished.
Korra: You were banished from the North? Why?
Tonraq: Because I almost destroyed the entire Tribe.
He tells us how raiders attacked the North Pole and he was the General that led the army into the fight.
Tonraq says he drove them away, but he went after them and found them in an ancient forest. The fight ended with the forest being destroyed.
After that the Dark Spirit's attacked the Northern Water Tribe and it was his fault. So his father, the Chief before Unalaq banished him from the North.
Tonraq then stands up and looks away.
Bolin: Whoa. So you were supposed to be Chief, then he became Chief. No wonder you guys don't like each other.
I hit Bolin.
Y/N: Bolin, shut up.
Korra stands up.
Korra: I can't believe you kept this from me.
He turns back to face Korra.
Tonraq: I was protecting you from the shame I brought on the family.
Korra: Why do you keep hiding things from me and then telling me it's for my own protection? I'm tired of you protecting me.
She walks away.
Tonraq: Korra...
I stand up.
Y/N: I'll go check on her.
I leave to catch up to Korra.
It's safe to say this trip is gonna be more awkward than it already is.
