CHAPTER 1

I woke up that morning and sighed as I had to sweep of the jeep of decayed grass the midnight wind had swept into my room.

It had been 30 years since the end of the world, a total of 4 billion souls were lost. And the world has lost its shape and boundaries, what was left of all the continents was merged together, all that was left of the earth was a huge continent and water , large masses of water all around us. My elder brother believes that there are other pieces of land all over the world that wasn't sunk by the great flood. He says one day, he'll build a vessel capable of making rounds all over the world. Because of this dream, he registered under the junior sea corps to study sea and ocean life and marine engineering.  Unlike me, he was born with extraordinary intelligence and was the smartest person I've seen. And I've seen a lot of smart people.

As I stood from my wooden bed, I looked out of my small window to stare at the sun. The bright sun and its heat that met my skin quite harshly. Ever since the end of the old world, we still had minor nuclear showers from the outward.  With our ozone layer nearly depleted and some parts of the world completely gone, we had to apply a natural solution made of dead barks of trees and oils that absorb these radiations and turned it to air, Breathable air.

But I was disappointed with the number of post apocalyptic movies I and my brother watched while at the orphaned children's home. It indicates the world will be all sand and heat or completely run by chaos. But that's not nearly true.
During the first year of the merge(when all that was left of the continents merged together) we were in chaos but leaders called the grand chief all banded together to restore order and share the lands according to race and ethnicity.  And these parts were called the drafts. On the eastern draft were the Olarcs, they were once indigenes of the middle eastern nations of the old world and parts of the large country,  russia.  And close to them were the south east drafts,  they are the Migwes. They belonged to the caribbeans and the Australians and its islands that survived. On the west were the Afrikini, the black lands draft. It is inhabited by the Africans and has the largest land mass and resources. Because of their land mass, they are ruled by two grand chief. And neighboring cities are what was left of Europe. It's called the Europa draft. On the north is what remained of the south American continent and north America.  We call it Americae draft. Close to them are Aseans, the descents of the other parts of Asia. And the south, are the cold lands. All but ice and snow. No one ventures in the cold lands,  so I doubt that there are indigenes of the place.

The grand chief of each regions agreed to do business with each other and not go into war. So as to avoid the ways and consequences of the leaders of the old world. Well, you must be ask yourself where do I belong.  Amongst this diversity of races and cultures ,there are people who free range. Some who have lost their people or are going extinct.  We stay in the central lands and struggle for resources as we are still affected by bad soil and contaminated water and random black goo gas eruptions from beneath us. Killing the trees and plants that we struggle to plant.

But these aren't the biggest impacts of the apocalypse on us.

It's the power.

What is the power you ask?. I'll tell you alright.
While the gas emitted from the black goo all over the world killed millions and poisoned the earth. Some weren't affected. After the merge, people began to notice strange developments in their bodies. Although not everyone had these developments but it was common.  Some noticed they could do extraordinary things like jump off buildings without harming themselves or even a scratch on them. Some could fly or run at amazing speed , control their body heat to produce fire or ice.
These people were called Angels.

This was amazing but it came at a cost. Now my brother discovered that the cause of the abilities was as a result of the particles of the black goo embedded in our DNA and altering our body chemistry.  And the more one uses his/her abilities,  the more the black goo takes over the person's DNA and once it has completely overtaken your blood cells. You die. Turn into a mummified creature and into black goo.

So it was a blessing and a curse. But nevertheless people still used these abilities.  We even created a sports where these abilities are put to the test.
I experienced the power at a young age and haven't used it ever since. It hurt people I loved.

Running the wooden comb across my thick curly brown hair was proving quite difficult and taxing.  I cursed at the skies as more strands of hair fell if my hair. Another effect of the radiation on us. I heard a soft knock on the door and hurried to see if my brother was back from his midnight readers fellowship he had with his marine boys.
Glee filled my heart as he walked into the room, he looked exhausted but still managed to flash a soft smile.

"Isabela,  help me get a cup of water.  I'm so thirsty from the continuous arguements with the marines from Europa draft. Those people need help."
I grabbed a scoop and served him water in a wooden bowl.

We kept talking about day when we heard a rustle at the back of our cabin. And then the smell of boiling goo, Amando ran to grab out masks and protective gear and help me put mine on just after I help him with his.

"Follow me okay, watch where I step. I need to close that hole before it contaminates the entire neighborhood."
I nodded as we walked towards the large steam erupting from the ground. As we neared it, sounds of bone snapping could  be heard and smell of burnt flesh was in the air.

And right before us, we witnessed as a man born out of the goo was formed. An elderly man, in his late sixties. As he drew up his eyes,  he gave a loud scream and went unconscious.

I was so scared and confused.  Who was he and what exactly was he?
