Chapter 6 Sorting
Lindsay's POV
We arrived at Hogsmeade station. Fred and George told Ron a lie about the sorting while they told me the truth. We got off the train. There was someone calling for the first years. Harry had introduced him as Hagrid. We had to get on these boats. I rode with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Once there we were given to McGonagall. Fred and George told me about her. She was the head of Gryffindor house. A boy embarrassed himself by grabbing his toad. She left us for a bit.
"It's true then, what they're saying on the train. Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts," a blonde boy who I knew to be Draco Malfoy said.
Students started to whisper my twin's name.
"This is Crabbe, and Goyle and I'm Malfoy...Draco Malfoy," Draco said.
Ron and I snickered at his name. Malfoy turned to look at us.
"Think my name's funny, do you? No need to ask yours. Red hair, and a hand me down robe? You must be a Weasley," he said looking at Ron.
He then looked at me but couldn't recognize me cause I have been missing.
"Lindsay Potter. I'm Harry's twin," I said.
Students started whispering about me.
"You'll soon find that some wizarding families are better than others, Potter. Don't want to go making friends with the wrong sort. I can help you there," Malfoy said extending his hand to my brother.
"I think I can tell who the wrong sort are for myself, thanks," Harry said.
Malfoy glared at Harry. McGonagall returned and smacked him on the shoulder with a paper. He retreated with one last glare.
"We're ready for you now," McGonagall said.
She lead everyone through two large doors and into the Great Hall, where there are four long tables with a ton of student, as well as floating candles. The roof appears to be the sky.
"It's not real, the ceiling. It's just bewitched to look like the night sky. I read about it in Hogwarts: A History," I hear Hermione say.
McGonagall stopped in the front.
"All right, will you wait along here, please? Now, before we begin, Professor Dumbledore would like to say a few words," McGonagall said.
Dumbledore stood up from the main table.
"I have a few start of term notices I wish to announce. The first years please note that the dark forest is strictly forbidden to all students. Also, our caretaker, Mr. Filch has asked me to remind you that the 3rd floor corridor on the right hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a most painful death. Thank you," Dumbledore said.
Then the hat started to sing.
Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!
"When I call your name, you will come forth, I shall place the sorting hat on your head, and you will be sorted into your houses," McGonagall said.
The first person was Hannah Abbott. Hermione Granger, Seamus Finnegan, Lavender Brown, Parvati Patil, and Neville Longbottom were sorted into Gryffindor. Harry was next. I tapped my foot nervously.
"GRYFFINDOR," The sorting hat yelled after a few minutes.
Everyone cheered. Fred and George were saying 'We got Potter' repeatedly.
"Potter, Lindsay," McGonagall said.
I walked to the front and sat on the stool. McGonagall placed the hat on my head.
"Hmmm...... The lost twin.... Many people have been looking for you Ms. Potter," the hat said in my mind.
"I bet. Though some people knew," I thought.
"Yes well you have wit and bravery. There's also cunning," the hat said in my mind.
"NOT SLYTHERIN," I thought.
"I see you know where you want to go and I believe that's where you belong. Better be," the hat said in my mind.
"GRYFFINDOR," the hat yelled.
The Gryffindors cheered as McGonagall took the hat off and I went to sit with my house mates. Fred, George, and even Percy cheered 'We got Rosie' repeatedly. Ron was sorted into Gryffindor. Soon the last person was sorted into Slytherin. Dumbledore stood up.
"Welcome. Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you," Dumbledore said.
He sat back down and everybody clapped and cheered. Food appeared on the table. I filled my plate. Hermione was having a conversation with Percy about school. Then the ghost of Gryffindor appeared to welcome us first years. He started to float away.
"I know you! You're Nearly Headless Nick," Ron said.
"I would prefer Sir Nicholas if you don't mind," Sir Nicholas said.
"Nearly Headless? How can you be nearly headless," Hermione asked.
"Like this," Sir Nicholas said as he moved his head.
Ron screamed a bit. Soon desserts appeared and food disappeared. I learned Neville was raised by his grandmother. Seamus was a Halfblood. Once the desserts disappeared, Professor Dumbledore got to his feet again. The hall fell silent.
"Ahern -- just a few more words now that we are all fed and watered. I have a few start-of-term notices to give you. First years should note that the forest on the grounds is forbidden to all pupils. And a few of our older students would do well to remember that as well," Dumbledore said his twinkling eyes flashed in the direction of the twins.
"I have also been asked by Mr. Filch, the caretaker, to remind you all that no magic should be used between classes in the corridors. Quidditch trials will be held in the second week of the term. Anyone interested in playing for their house teams should contact Madam Hooch. And finally, I must tell you that this year, the third-floor corridor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a very painful death. And now, before we go to bed, let us sing the school song," Dumbledore said.
I knew the song as my older brothers taught me the lyrics. Dumbledore gave his wand a little flick and a long golden ribbon flew out of it, which rose high above the tables and twisted itself, snakelike, into words.
"Everyone pick their favorite tune," said Dumbledore, "and off we go!"
The school sang.
Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts,
Teach us something please,
Whether we be old and bald
Or young with scabby knees,
Our heads could do with filling
With some interesting stuff,
For now they're bare and full of air,
Dead flies and bits of fluff,
So teach us things worth knowing,
Bring back what we've forgot,
just do your best, we'll do the rest,
And learn until our brains all rot.
Everybody finished the song at different times. At last, only the twins were left singing along to a very slow funeral march. Dumbledore conducted their last few lines with his wand and when they had finished, he was one of those who clapped loudest.
"Ah, music," he said, wiping his eyes. "A magic beyond all we do here! And now, bedtime. Off you trot!"
I giggled. Percy called all of the first and showed us the Common Room and where boys and girls sleep. I was roomed with Hermione, Lavender, and Parvati.
"It's exciting isn't it," Hermione asked.
"I have heard all about Hogwarts so I suppose," I said.
After a while we all went to sleep. I had privately talked to Ginny using the rings. I also sent a letter to my parents to tell them about the sorting.
