Chapter 55

Sky

Prom.

Very overrated, honestly.

I don't get why my mom is so determined to get lipstick on me.

"I swear if you step closer I will hit you with this." I hold up my Spongebob bat. It's a plush, so even if I do hit her it wouldn't hurt.

My mom knows how much I hate make up more than anyone, mostly because I took it after her; she too was never one to wear makeup when she was young, and she still doesn't, because we both have sensitive skin and it irritates us, not that I would know, because I refuse to put any on.

I respect the art of makeup, because it's very impressive what people can do with it. I just simply can't handle it, and not because I want to be different and 'quirky'; I just hate how it feels. I barely moisturize; which I should do more often.

I know she won't force me to wear lipstick, she's just teasing me. However, I can't help but wonder where she got it from in the first place, since neither of us wear any.

She laughs and backs away, putting the cursed object away.

"Alright, come on let's curl your hair." She chuckles, wrinkles forming by her eyes. I smile and walk over, to sit on the plastic chair I put in front of my vanity just so my mom could curl my hair, since I am much taller than her.

I love being the second tallest in the house; my dad being the tallest, but not by much. I love teasing my much older brother, nine years to be exact, about being taller than him.

My mom separates my hair into strands and clips them up as the curling iron heats up. Once she's done with separating my hair, she takes the rod and wraps one strand around it, counting to 20, careful not to burn my hair.

She pulls it away, revealing a funny looking curl, to which I laugh very hard at.

"Oh my god it looks like a pig's tail!" I laugh hysterically, my mom joining in.

"Look at it!" She laughs harder.

This is going to take a while it seems. She curls the rest of my hair, and despite it not being perfect, I still love the way it looks. It makes my face thinner due to my hair looking thicker than it already is.

I'm already wearing my dress, so I just put on my gold flower earrings, and I replace Peter's charm bracelet with a gold bracelet to match the whole color palette; gold and deep red.

My dress is a deep red, but it glitters in the light. It has a fitted top, and the skirt flares out after the waist. It has a lace type fabric all over it, giving it more detail. It has a ribbon and bow tied around my waist as well.

Now it's time to go over to Peter's so Meg would drive us there. My dad offered to take us, but Meg insisted.
Peter doesn't have a date, and I'm meeting the girls and Tim there. Although knowing us, we'd probably hang together as a group most of the time. Anna is there because she's part of the committee, and she managed to get Laura in too; since this is exclusively for our grade and whoever they bring as a date.

"Damn, sky!" Luke jokingly whistles, knowing it would annoy me. I blush and glare at him. "Everyone's eyes will be on you, not sure I like that."

"As if I would." I chuckle. "And don't worry, I'm sure they won't."

"Debatable." He smirks. "I bet you Peter will be speechless when he sees you."

I roll my eyes, blushing at the though and getting butterflies.

"Alright, come on; don't wanna be late, do you?" My dad smiles at me and I smile back.

I walk over to the door, wearing the same pair of heels I wore at Stormie's wedding.

"Be careful, Sky!"

"I will, mom." I smile and wave. "Bye guys!"

I manage to walk by myself to the Thompson household, ringing the doorbell nervously, holding my phone in my hand.

I wish dresses had pockets.

"Sky!" Mrs Thompson exclaims happily once she opens the door. She pulls me in a hug, and I return it. "Oh, I missed you so much! Where have you been?"

"I missed you too." I smile and walk in as she gestured for me to get in. "I've just been overloaded with school, that's all."

"You look absolutely stunning, dear."

"Aw, thank you so much!" I blush and grin.

"Peter, hurry up!" She yells towards the stairs, and I could feel my heart beat faster. Meg walks out of his room, rolling her eyes, probably at Peter. She walks down and her eyes widen when she sees me.

"Oh my god, Sky!" She squeals, running over to me and twirling me around to admire my look. "You look breathtaking!"

"Thank you, Meg." My blush challenges the color of my dress.

Peter sprints out of his room, buttoning up his suit jacket, still not looking up. My breath hitches in my throat, and my blush deepens.

He looks drop dead gorgeous.

He's wearing a charcoal black suit, a red flower in his chest pocket, matching his maroon tie.

We're matching once again.

He finally looks up and freezes in his tracks, looking at me with wide eyes. His eyes observe me as I observe him.

Meg and her mom have left the room, so it's just me and Peter staring at each other in awe, blushing madly.

I could hear my heart thumping out of my chest.

"You look incredible." I manage to say out loud with a shy smile.

"And you..." he trails off, lost for words. "You're stunning...absolutely breathtaking."

He walks closer to me, looking down into my eyes, both of us getting lost in the moment.

We hear a camera shutter and turn to see Meg standing there with Peter's camera, giving us both a knowing smile.

"Let's take some pictures of you two." She grins. "Good thing you're matching."

That's when it hits me, of course she's the one who chose the tie for Peter; she has seen my dress.

Peter and I smile at each other, getting even closer to each other. He slowly puts an arm around my waist, as if asking me if it's okay, once I don't do anything to refuse his actions, he pulls me closer to his side, and the smell of his cologne fills my nose. We smile at the camera as Meg takes multiple photos of us two.

"Let's get you two to prom!"

Music blasts through large speakers around the gym, and I suddenly feel so out of place. Usually I'm really confident in this room, but tonight, here in this dress, watching all of my classmates dolled up to perfection, with smooth skin and bright lips, I can't help but hug myself, holding my elbows, which I always resemble to chicken skin, because that's what it feels like.

I also can't get rid of the feeling that something is going to go wrong today; I have a pit in my stomach, and I know I'm not nervous that much.

"You okay?" Peter asks me, noticing the change in my posture.

"Yeah, of course." I smile reassuringly, taking my eyes off of his to look around for our friends. My eyes meet Anna and she grins, calling someone over her shoulder, pointing to us. Peter and I are already walking over to where she is when I see Tim walking over, looking dashing in his dark grey tux, with a red rose in his chest pocket, like Peter, but he isn't wearing a tie or bow.

My eyebrows rise in surprise, finally seeing Tim in something other than an oversized hoodie.

"Hey, guys." He smiles. "You look awesome!" Peter thanks him and complements him back.

"What, no insult?" I smile playfully and he rolls his eyes.

"Not tonight, it's prom, so I might as well be nice to you." He smiles down at me. From the corner of my eye I see that Peter had left and is now talking to Anna and Laura by the photo booth near us.

"Okay, who are you and what have you done to Tim?" I narrow my eyes at him.

"Stormie is watching me." He chuckles. "If I'm not a gentleman, she's sure to shave my head."

"Not that you need it." I laugh lightly teasing him. "You're balding anyways."

"Yeah I know..." He rubs the back of his neck. "So, wanna go prove to Nat and Owen that we did come together?"

"Lead the way!" I grin, taking his outstretched hand.

The girls and guys and I are dancing randomly to songs I don't recognize, but they clearly do, because they're singing along loudly.

Would it hurt to put a rock song?

I shake away the thought as I move around awkwardly, my main focus being not falling down or accidentally slapping someone.

"Is that Michael?" Peter stops dancing, looking behind me, seeing him dancing closely with none other than Brianna. "What the hell is he doing here?"

Suddenly I remember why I had a bad feeling coming in; Anna had overheard Brianna talking to one of the committee members, saying that she wanted to show a slideshow, dedicated to Peter. We don't know what it is, but we aren't going to risk her hurting Peter, so we made a special slideshow to show instead, nominating him for prom king.

We haven't told Peter about any of this.

"Up to no good, for sure." I sigh.

Suddenly a slow song is put on, and everyone pairs up, swaying to the music, staring each other in the eyes as they whisper between themselves.

"You guys realize you have to dance together, right?" Nat smirks at Tim and I, gesturing us to do the same as her and Owen.

Laura, Anna and Peter walk away to the food bar, since they're here as a group, and don't feel comfortable slow dancing together.

"Shall we?" Tim holds out his hand and I laugh, nodding and taking his hand, walking closer to the center of the room.

He puts his hands on my waist and I put my hand around his neck, smiling softly.

"Well this isn't awkward at all." I joke and he chuckles.

"Do you notice how no one is actually dancing?" He chuckles. "Everyone is just swaying, and that is not dancing."

"I'm not one to talk, I suck at dancing." I laugh.

"Wanna dance for real?"

"Uh, sure?" I say hesitantly. Tim takes one of my hands that were around his neck and started to move us around in a pattern, going perfectly with the song. He suddenly let go of my waist and twirled me around, which resulted in me almost falling because of my heels, but he quickly wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me closer to him, dipping me slightly. My eyes widen in shock, I never knew that he could dance like this; even at Stormie's wedding we only swayed to the music.

He continues to lead me along some other moves before the song ends, and some students around us start clapping for us, having seen the whole thing. I pant, feeling my face heating up and stare at Tim in awe.

"Where did that come from?"

"I got bored." He shrugs and smiles.

I'm about to say something when I hear someone speaking into the microphone, grabbing everyone's attention. We look over to the stage, seeing Brianna and Michael standing there next to each other with smug grins on their faces.

"Excuse me," Brianna tapped the microphone, making most of the students cringe. "I want you all to meet Michael; Peter Thompson's old friend."

"This is our queue." Tim whispers to me and I nod, looking over to see Peter standing up stiffly, frozen in shock at the sight. Tim and I quickly walk over to him, the rest of our friends already being there.

"Hey everyone!" Michael grins into the microphone, his eyes catching Peter, who stares back angrily. "What do you all think of my buddy, Pete?"

The students cheer because they all love Peter, obviously.

"Well, I have a little thing to show you all, from my time with Peter." He smirks and a video is played behind him. Peter is about to stomp over there, but I catch his hand on time, looking straight into his eyes.

"I got this, don't worry." I smile. "Trust me."

He nods and stays in his place, his eyes never leaving me as I quickly walk over to the stage without falling over.

I walk on stage, nodding at Anna; who gives me an extra microphone. Michael is about to start speaking again, but is cut off by the wrong video showing.

The slideshow behind me is showing pictures of Peter and us, and him in school games and other activities.

"Peter Thompson is a great friend." I speak confidently, as I look at everyone. "He's fun, honest, and stands for what he believes in."

"No, he's a player!" Michael buts in and I glare at him.

"He may have been, but here in this school, he's been nothing but a nice person to everyone in our class." I say. "It doesn't matter who you were, what matters is who you are, and right this moment Peter is a great person." I turn to face the crowd again. "Don't you agree?"

The students cheer once again, agreeing with me. I turn to look at Brianna and Michael smugly. "However, you two are not."

"You can't prove anything!" Brianna scoffed and I raised my eyebrow, motioning to the class with my head.

"Can't I?" Brianna looked like a deer caught in headlights, her eyes widening and freezing, which is uncharacteristic of her, just as it is for me to be standing here confidently.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I grin. "I nominate Peter as the prom king!"

I get down from stage, seeing Peter staring at me with an unexplained emotion.

"What the hell just happened?" He asks.

"Brianna happened." Nat pats him on the back and we all nod.

"And she might keep trying to sabotage you," I say. "But we know her moves, and after today, I don't think she'd have the guts to do it."

"You guys are seriously the best." Peter grins at us and we laugh.

"We know." We all say to him and laugh, then explaining the whole situation to him. The music starts again and we continue dancing, with Tim and I dancing horribly despite our last slow dance, which ironically wasn't slow at all!

The party is soon to end, so one of the prom committee members is now on stage to announce the prom king and queen.

"And our king and queen are..." She builds suspense as I take a sip from the fruit punch because I'm too hot from dancing all night.

"Tim Hart and Sky Woods!!" Tim and I cheer, not caring about who has won-

Wait a minute.

"Dude..." I look at him.

"Dudette..." He looks at me just as shocked.

"You did this, didn't you?" I ask Anna, who grinned and pointed across the room, where Stormie and Miss Willow stood, grinning at us and cheering for us.

"Shall we, princess?" Tim holds out his hand for me once more with a smile on his face, his green eyes warming up.

"Bro, I just won queen." I sass back, taking his hand nonetheless, heading over to the stage to get our crowns. Our friends cheer for us the loudest, and me and Tim fist bump happily, not expecting this to happen in a million years. We walk back down, and they put on another slow song, so Tim and Pair up to dance again, closing the space between us.

"You do realize the tenth graders will never leave you now, right?" I grin at him.

"Don't remind me." He groans. "I'll go back to wearing baggy clothes."

"I must admit though, you look incredible tonight." I chuckle.

"And I gotta admit you actually look beautiful."

"Aww, does Timtam have a soft spot for me?" I tease.

"Oh shut up." He rolls his eyes and laughs. "So you and Peter are close again."

"I don't want to admit it, but yeah." I nod shyly, feeling my cheeks burn up. "Isn't it too soon to trust him again?"

"Maybe, but I don't think he's planning on leaving you ever again." He smirks. "Not when he's looking at you like that."

"Like what?"

"God, you're blinder than I thought." He groans, twirling me around and placing his hands on my waist again. "The dude is so in love with you!"

"I doubt that."

"Oh my god-" He cuts himself off. "I'm not even gonna argue."

"Good choice." I grin at him.

"You have to dance with him tonight, Sky." He smiles gently at me.

"You sure?" I ask.

"Of course." He smiles. "What are best friends for?"

"Annoying each other, which we already do." I laugh and he winks at me playfully. "Thanks for everything, Tim."

"No need to thank me." He shakes his head. "Now go dance with lover-boy."

I shake my head and laugh as I turn around, spotting Peter sipping on some punch, watching everyone dance. Who would have thought that the cutest guy in the grade wouldn't have a date to prom?

I walk over to him shyly.

"Hey, peter." I smile, blushing.

"Hey there, prom queen." He grins at me and I laugh. "Why aren't you and Tim dancing?"

"We did," I half shrug. "I was wondering if maybe you would want to dance with me?"

"Oh," he stands up straighter, a grin forming on his pink lips. "I'd love that, Sky."

We smile and walk over to the dance floor, his hands wrapping around my waist, and mine wrap around his neck as we sway to the music, which I for once recognize.

"I can't thank you enough for what you did back there." He says quietly, looking deeply into my eyes.

"You don't have to." I chuckle. "I'm tired of Brianna winning every time, I wasn't going to let her pick on you too."

"I don't deserve you." he sighs with a smile, pulling me closer to him.

"Perhaps." I giggle, looking up at him and he shakes his head, laughing with me.

"This reminds me of our first date." He smiles at the memory. "I had so much fun that day."

"I did too." I smile fondly.

We spend the rest of the night dancing, eventually returning to dance with all of our friends, going crazy and not having a care in the world

Prom isn't so bad after all.
