Chapter 49
Peter
"Got the plan?" Meg asks me as I get into her car's backseat to sit with Kat.
"Yup." I smile nervously.
"Hey, lookie!" Kat giggled. "It's Sky!"
I look out the window, a blush forming on my face as I see her running out her door frantically, holding her light blue varsity jacket in her arm as she fixes the bag on her back. Her high ponytail swings from side to side as her backpack bounces with her steps. Meg pushes the middle of the wheel, making the car let out a loud 'beep'.
"Sky! Over here!" She waves her hand out of her window, and my eyes widen at her actions. Sky stops in her tracks and looks over at the car, still not having seen me, she smiles widely and waves back at Meg.
"Hey!" She waves and smiles wider when her eyes meet Kat's. "I'd love to chat but I'm very late and Stormie will kill me, so I gotta blast!"
"Well then, get in the car!"
"Oh, no it's okay." She declines politely, her smile wavering off slightly once she sees me. "I can just run, need the cardio anyway."
"Please, Sky?" Kat gives her the famous Kat eyes and pout, to which Sky glares at her playfully, a smile on her face as she walks over to the car.
"I can't say no to those eyes, now can I?" She chuckles as she goes around, sitting in the passenger seat and glances back at me with a small smile. "Hi."
"Hey, Sky." I smile nervously, my heart beating a mile a minute. She turns around again but I could see her glancing at us through the mirror.
"So, why is Stormie going to kill you?" Meg asks as she starts the car and begins to drive away.
"Today's the middle grade games, and I'm responsible for taking care of the girls." She replied. "Stormie can't be there, so the nurse is coming with us for adult supervision, and I'm the leader basically."
"I'm sure your team will win." I smile. "You're a great captain."
"Thanks, Peter." She blushes and my smile widens, a blush covering my own face. Meg glances between us with a smirk before she turns back to the road.
The next few minutes were filled with laughs and smiles as Sky and Kat played together, me joining every now and then.
Sky tried her best to avoid me but wasn't being cold or mean to me; I could sense the sadness in her eyes every time she looked at me, breaking my heart.
Eventually, we get to the school and we get out of the car. Sky thanks Meg and hugs both her and Kat in a rush, saying goodbye to them before she hugged me quickly and left, waving back at us as she ran towards the bus with the younger team waiting for her.
I stood frozen in place, my face as red as a tomato as I stared at her walking figure. She and the girls were all cheering loudly and laughing in excitement.
"She hugged me..."
"As excited as I am about that," Meg says, crossing her arms. "she was in a rush and probably didn't even notice she hugged you."
"Yeah." I shake my head, snapping out of my thoughts. "Well then, I have to go apologize to some friends, see you later." I bend down to give Kat a kiss on her cheek and hugging Meg quickly before I enter the school, my nerves sky rocketing.
I spot Tim by his locker and make my way to him.
"Hey, man." I smile and he nods at me. "Do you happen to know where Nat, Laura and Anna are?"
"Uhh, not really." He says. "Why?"
I don't know if it's just me being too nervous or if his eyes really do hold murder in them. It's like he's staring into my soul and burning me with his cold green eyes. And his expressionless face makes it even scarier.
"I just wanted to apologize to them." I look away from his eyes. "I really messed up, dude."
"Yeah." He chuckles. "You really did."
"I know...But I want to prove to them that I really am sorry."
"Are you going to finally stop hanging with those losers now?"
"Oh, I haven't been around them in a couple of days." I state. "I also kind of yelled at Brianna."
He raises an eyebrow and just looks at me, nodding slightly.
"Well, good luck."
"Thanks." I smile gratefully and leave his side to look for the girls.
"Peter!" A girl whom I don't care to remember her name calls out to me with a wide smile, standing up straighter but in what looks like a very uncomfortable way to make her body look better. I ignore her calls and keep walking, my head set on three girls who I owe an apology to.
I don't deserve their forgiveness, but I'll still try. I have to.
I go over to Anna's locker first, and luckily they're all there. I take a deep breath and make my way towards them as I put my hands in my back pockets, feeling them sweat.
"Uhh, hi." I clear my throat.
They turn to look at me with confused faces before they exchange looks, as if they're having a mental conversation.
"Peter, didn't expect to see you." Nat says with a small smile. "How are you?"
"I'm awful." I admit and sigh, rubbing the back of my head. "I need to apologize to you girls. I messed up really bad, and I regret it so much."
"Damn right you did." Laura chuckled and Nat glared at her.
"I did, and I don't deserve your forgiveness at all, but I have to say sorry. I really mean it. I ended my friendship with Brianna and I will never even look her way, of course except in the internship I have because it's my job...but what I'm trying to say is, I'm trying to fix my mistakes. I want to make it up to you but I don't know how. So please, whatever it is I have to do for you to forgive me, just let me know."
"You don't have to apologize to us." Anna sighed. "Sky is the one who's mostly hurt. You broke her heart, Peter."
"We forgive you." Nat smiles and I smile back. "But that doesn't mean we trust you again, that'll take some time."
"Yes, of course!" I exclaim happily. "Thank you so much, I won't let you down again, I promise."
"As for Sky, she might not be ready to forgive you." Laura says. "She's really hurt."
"What can I do?" I frown, my heart getting heavier, knowing that I hurt Sky a lot. "I need her, you guys don't understand, she means a lot to me..."
"Then why did you leave her in the first place?" Anna asks.
"I was mad and blinded by Brianna's lies. We both got so mad and she told me to stay away from her, so I did. I regret it every minute."
"We know you like her."
"You do?" My eyes widen, but then I remember that they've seen the note. "Right...uhm, it's more than that though."
"What do you mean?"
"I'm kind of in love with her..." I sheepishly grin as I rub the back of my neck again, slowly moving my eyes to meet theirs.
"Oh."
"Damn...that...I did not expect that..."
"I freaking knew it!!"
I smile at them, feeling some weight lift off my shoulders.
"So...are we friends again?" I ask hopefully.
"Yes, of course." Nat smiles. "But you still have to win back Sky."
"Will you help me?" I ask and the girls look at each other with knowing smiles and nod, making me grin happily.
I smile as I watch Sky lead her team into the hallways with a wide grin on their faces as they all yell out cheerfully.
"We won, we won!" They yelled in a tune. "We're the royals we won't bow down, best at the game we'll take you down!"
I drowned out the rest of their chant as I stared at Sky, as if everything turned into slow motion. Sky's smile was wide and bright, and she was practically glowing. She looked at her team with pride and excitement as she yelled out loud with them. Her hair was a mess and she's slightly sunburned but that doesn't make her any less mesmerizing.
The students in the hallway clap for them as they continue their way to the gym, to hang out for the rest of the day, too tired to focus in any of their classes.
My heart flutters when she meets my eyes, and the feeling doesn't go away when she turns her head to look back at her younger teammates.
I can't wait to be there for her with open arms after every achievement again.
I will get you back, Sky. I need you.
