Track 16: Little Wonders - Rob Thomas.
Benito was sitting next to Helena in a doctor's waiting room. Both of them were nervous since it was the first time Helena had a check up after finding out that she was expecting. So far nobody had speculated anything but Helena's belly was growing and the more loose clothes she was wearing at her shows, the more theories were going around online. The rumours were making Helena laugh, especially since Benito's name had never been mentioned once. Although they were hanging out publicly - not as a couple -, the fans linked her with everyone except him. Benito had his left hand resting on her knee while he was going through some e-mails on his phone. Helena had her head leaned against his shoulder, she was exhausted. For her, the worst part about being pregnant was being tired constantly.
"Ms. Rodriguez?" a nurse said, causing both of them to look at the door. Benito put his phone away and got up from his chair. Helena also stood up and followed him and the nurse through the door. When they reached the diagnostic room, the nurse excused herself and hurried off. It didn't take long until a doctor entered the room. She shook both of their hands and sat down with Helena's record in front of her.
"Okay, Ms. Rodriguez, how are we feeling today?" she asked, turning towards Helena who had sat down on a chair next to the examination couch.
"Incredibly tired." Helena responded honestly. The doctor nodded and started the ultrasound computer.
"Your body needs a lot of energy at the moment, so being tired all day is completely normal." she said, putting on some gloves. Benito was sitting next to Helena, rubbing her back.
"Okay, Ms. Rodriquez, please make yourself comfortable on the couch." the doctor said, pointing at the couch. Helena nodded, got up and took off her hoodie. Then she rolled up her top, before she laid down on the couch. Benito scooted over and reached for Helena's hand. As the doctor put the gel onto her stomach she made a face.
"Do you want to know the gender this time?" the doctor asked, putting the ultrasound device onto Helena's stomach. Helena looked at Benito with a questioning look on her face. He smiled and nodded, so Helena also nodded towards the doctor. As soon as the black and white picture showed up on the computer screen, Benito squeezed Helena's hand. She looked at him and noticed that he had watery eyes; he was getting emotional.
"Let's check the heartbeat first." the doctor said and pressed some buttons on the computer. A loud and fast heartbeat came through the speakers. Helena had already heard that but Benito hadn't and it did something to him.
"Everything looks normal, Ms. Rodriguez. The baby is growing as it should and the heartbeat sounds great." the doctor told them. After a few more moments, she took screenshots and then started zooming into the picture.
"Looks like you're having a boy, Ms. Rodriguez." the doctor cheerfully said.
Later that day, Benito was rehearsing for a show. He was in a great mood and had a blast jumping around on the stage. His manager stopped the music in the middle of a song, causing Benito and the dancers to turn towards him. Two men in their late 40s were talking to Julio, while they were walking across the stage towards him. Benito took the in-ears out of his ear and grabbed his water bottle from the side of the stage.
"Mr. Martinez?" one of the men spoke.
"Yeah?" Benito gave back unsure.
"Morrison, LAPD." the man introduced himself.
"LAPD? Did I speed too often?" Benito jokingly asked. The man laughed silently, then started to shake his head.
"No, don't worry about that. Do you know Helena Rodriguez?" the other man responded.
"Yeah, she's my girlfriend, why?" Benito wanted to know, getting concerned.
"There was a car accident." Morrison told him. Benito looked between the two men.
"Ay dios. Is she alright?" he immediately asked.
"As alright as can be considering the circumstances." the man next to Morrison replied.
"I'm sorry, I gotta go see her, which hospital is she in?" Benito asked, quickly walking towards the entrance of the stage. The officers stopped him by grabbing his upper arm.
"She's undergoing surgery at the moment." Morrison said.
"Which hospital is she in?" Benito repeated, getting angrier with every second that went by.
"Cedars-Sinai-Medical Center." the man next to Morrison told him. Benito didn't listen to what they said next, he immediately made his way out of the venue he had been rehearsing in. Julio didn't even try to stop him, all he did was tell his driver to drive Benito there. He was nervously chewing on his fingernails, the ride to the hospital seemed to have no end. As soon as the car stopped in front of the building, Benito opened the door and ran through the entrance. Completely out of breath, he stopped in front of the reception desk.
"Helena Rodriguez?" he just asked. The nurse behind the desk eyed him, seemed to notice him and then looked at the computer screen next to her.
"Just got out of surgery, you can wait in front of the recovery room on the 12th floor." she told him. Benito thanked her and immediately made his way over to the elevator. It felt like an eternity until the elevator finally stopped on the 12th floor. Benito walked out and looked down the hallway. There was a reception desk just like in the entrance hall, so he walked over to it.
"Good evening, sir. How can I help you?" the nurse behind it asked friendly.
"Helena Rodriguez." he simply said. The nurse gave him directions, he thanked her and walked off. There was a small waiting area next to the recovery room and Benito sat down on one of the chairs. He was wondering where her parents were. A doctor who approached him made him look up.
"Are you here for Helena Rodriguez?" he asked Benito who then nodded.
"Since she only had one name in her file as emergency contact, I'm guessing you're Mr. Martinez?" the doctor then wanted to know; Benito nodded again. The doctor sat down next to him on one of the chairs.
"Ms. Rodriguez suffered two fractures, one on her upper arm and one on her right foot." the doctor told him. Benito let out a sigh of relief.
"However, due to the stress caused by the accident, she gave birth prematurely." he continued. Benito stared at him in disbelief.
"I don't understand. Is our son..." he couldn't finish the sentence.
"He's in intensive care at the moment." the doctor replied, causing Benito to let out another sigh of relief.
About two hours later, Benito was sitting next to Helena's hospital bed. She was not fully awake yet but the doctor had let him into her room. Helena had her eyes open and felt dizzy. She knew that Benito was there, she had already seen him but she didn't have the strength to say something. Her body felt like it had been crushed. Benito was holding her hand and watching her carefully.
"How are you feeling?" he asked when she finally turned her head towards him.
"Like shit." she responded. Her voice was raspy and barely audible. Benito kissed the back of her hand. Instinctively, she wanted to reach for her belly but since she couldn't, she looked down and noticed that the small bump wasn't there anymore.
"Benito, where's our baby?" she frantically asked him.
"He's in intensive care. The nurses said that we have to wait until we can see him." he responded. Helena closed her eyes because she could feel the tears burn in them. When Benito noticed it, he got up from his chair and placed a kiss on the top of her head.
"Don't worry, everything's gonna be okay." he said quietly. Helena slowly nodded but kept her eyes shut. Her life felt like a nightmare in this moment and so did Benito's but at the same time they both knew that their baby would survive.
