Baekhyun's POV
"Baekhyun, why do you have in possession letters, I used to send to my dad?" she asked again with shaky voice. It felt like the whole world stopped. He didn't know, what to think nor what to do. The moment he opened the eyes and saw her standing there with the damned letters in her hands, he felt like everything will go down the drain. If he hadn't taken them out of the safely hidden box this morning, because he felt like reading them again, this wouldn't have happened.
"You said you will explain, now is the time to talk. Baekhyun, why do you have them?" He saw tears welling in her eyes, as well as the determination not to let them reach the edge of her eyelids. He saw her crying two times, but he knew she is not the person who does that often, that's why she was blinking rapidly to get rid of the urge to do so. He couldn't bear to look at her anymore and lowered his gaze.
"There is a simple explanation to why I have them," his voice croaked. He wanted to tell her, to clear up the misunderstanding, which he could feel, is arising between them right here at this exact moment.
"Why does it look like, it's not that easy then? Did you... take them away from him?" she let out in a whisper, still staring at him, making him even more uneasy. He was in loss of words, which was unusual for someone who always knows what say; his mind went blank, having no idea what to tell her, how to explain himself. He didn't plan to reveal this part of his motivation to destroy her father, this way and definitely not before the time, Dee will trust him completely.
"Beakhyun..." she said his name again, sounding confused.
"Did you read them?" she murmured, when she realized all of them are open and in his room. There was no doubt, that she already knew, that he did, but she still had to ask him. He lifted his eyes, meeting hers. She covered her mouth with hand, when she read the truth in his eyes.
"Bloody hell..." she yelped.
"Dee..." he raised his arm to touch her, but she shifted away, pressing the letter on her chest.
"I don't think I really want to know anymore, what sick games you are playing," she said, while her voice cracked. She suddenly turned around and run out of the room. He stared at her disappearing back, standing there frozen in a spot. It took him few seconds before he realized, he can't just let her go, without telling her everything.
He run after her, but before he could get farther, he bumped into a Chanyeol, who was standing outside their room.
"Baek, what happened this time?" Chan sounded honestly concerned for him and Dee, but Baekhyun needed to go now, before she gets away from him, falling deeper into her own thoughts, leaving there wrong ideas.
"Not now, Chanyeol," he wanted to shake him of, but when his hand landed on Baek's shoulder, he looked up at him.
"She told me to stop you," his friend sighed, digging his fingers into the flesh of his shoulder. The only sentence made him tense in one place, only looking all the way to the end of the hallway and closed door of the apartment. She's gone, thinking again of him as a scumbag. He didn't mind that before, but now he found it harder to follow his own plan. He found it harder, whenever he met her big chestnut brown eyes.
He shook of Chanyeol's hand and went back into his room, slamming the door behind him, hoping no one will dare to disturb him now. He had no idea, how to fix things now. He thought their relationship was getting better, getting closer... which was happening, but he forgot how many secrets he holds.
He sat down on the bed again, hiding face in his hands.
~
He balled hands in fists, trying to remain calm, but he found it too hard. Especially looking into the face of person, who was a cause of all this mess.
He started to hate this person slowly and passionately, as the year, by year went past. Today was the day, the anger, the disgust and distain he held towards him, reached the top. He could hardly contain his rage at this point, glaring at him, sitting there, like he is some kind of king.
Which he was, technically. He had the power to do whatever the hell he wants with their lives.
"Did you really have to barge into my office like this?" he asked him in calm tone, like Baekhyun just didn't flung open the door, with receptionist running behind and screaming something about, that he doesn't have an arranged appointment. But Baekhyun didn't give a shit if he has it or not. He was fuming, not being able to form a sentence, thanks to the wrath bubbling inside of him and controlling his emotions.
"You can leave us," director said to his assistant.
"Sir, you have a meeting in five minutes," he reminded him before he disappeared behind the door, giving Baekhyun one last frown.
"Should I guess why you are here?" Director Kim, never wasted time and went straight to the point, which made Baekhyun even more pissed, than he already was. He felt tears stinging in his eyes, threatening to get over the edge. His hands were shaking, being overpowered by a sadness and never ending fury. He hated this part of himself, always acting before thinking, which was one of the reasons why he was here right now. He couldn't stay still, like everyone else. He didn't blame them, but his own temper didn't let him to only watch, like everything is crumbling down.
"Why did you have to do it?" his own voice sounded unfamiliar, when he finally spoke. He didn't care about using a formal way of speech, he refrained from doing so a long time ago.
"There was no other way. That's how it sometimes works in the world, you will learn soon," Director told him in a strict voice. Why did it feel like he has been threatened right now?
"If abandoning people is normal in you world, then I'd rather not live in it," he hissed back, holding back with all his power. He wanted to do something, he shouldn't and he was barely keeping safe distance from the man on the opposite side of the desk.
"You are already in it, mister Byun, whether you like it or not," unfortunately Director Kim was right.
"It didn't have to come all the way to this end," Baekhyun didn't know what else to tell him, he couldn't change his mind and the decision, which is moving with all their lives. He wanted to curse at him and yell at him, but he knew there is no use to it. There is nothing in his power to make Director Kim regret his actions.
"But it did; now if you excuse me, I need to be somewhere else. I believe you can find your way out," Director Kim got up, making his way out of the office, leaving half insane Baekhyun standing there, as always feeling ever so powerless and pathetic. He wanted to make him feel the same way, as he is right now. He looked around, not knowing what to do. He ran fingers through his hair, hopeless wave washing over him.
He was once again broken. Shouldn't he start getting used to it by now? He should be immune by now, so why does it bother him so much, why does it have to hurt that much that it made him want to hurt the person who has done wrong. He didn't doubt if he knew how to achieve that, he would go for it.
The thing was, he didn't have any leverage against Director Kim.
He turned around ready to leave his office, when something coughed his eye. He was walking along Director's desk, when he saw half full bin and on the top of all the waste were laying bright red envelops. Many of them. It shouldn't stop him from storming away from here, but for some kind of reason it did. He found himself standing in front of litter, bending over to reach the envelops.
~
He still didn't have a clue, why he took them on that day. Not knowing what is inside of them and why they were simply thrown away, like they meant absolutely nothing.
He rubbed his tired eyes, when he remembered the little bit of the darkest part of his past. The part which hasn't been finished yet. He sometimes wondered what would happened, if he left those letters where they were. How would he live? How would Dee live, if he didn't have an idea, that she exists.
He let out bitter chuckle. Nothing would change, he thought. Just the way, Baekhyun would handle things, would go differently.
He knew Dee, even before he got to know her through those letters. He just forgot about her, completely.
When he got home with those envelops, it took him some time to get back to them and when he did, his destiny was already written in the stone.
Now he remembers all the lines from every each of the letters, making him feel the same distress and sadness, he felt the first time he read them, being painfully aware of the sorrow the young girl, who wrote those sentences overflowing with emotion, towards her cold father, who didn't have enough decency to at least keep them safe.
He thought he will only hate on the man for rest of his life, only briefly thinking of taking a vengeance, not having enough courage to do something at all. But after reading all those handwritten letters, getting to know the person behind it, turned his heart cold and set his temper on fire.
This happened two years ago. This made him, who he is right now. Professional in his field, perfect entertainer and performer, with hidden motives in his mind, driven by the desire to get revenge.
It might have sounded disgusting, but he was too deep in this matter, to turn around now.
The thing was, when he finally managed to get all what he wanted in places, slowly getting to his final destination and to get rid of Director Kim, once and for all, he found himself hesitate and stumble. He had an idea, why is he this way.
After getting involved with Dee, he knew that his personal feelings got in his way.
He let out curse, not hearing the knock on the door.
He can't let this happened.
"Baek, are you okay?" he heard someone talking behind the closed door. He raised his glance. He needed to be alone, he needed to think and figure out what to do next. He needs to persuade her to come to that conference, no matter what.
When Baekhyun didn't bother to answered, being consumed by his hectic thoughts, Suho opened the door and stepped inside, with the concern written all over his face.
"Baekhyun, you need to talk about it, stop pushing me and the others away," the leader of their group said in quiet tone, sitting beside him on the bed. Baekhyun refused to look at Suho, stubbornly burning holes into the floor, with his gaze. He realized that he became cold towards his friends, but he was planning to change that, as soon as he manages to complete his task, for everyone's sake.
"There is nothing to talk about, don't worry," he forced a smile on his face, deciding to glance at Suho. He and the others, after the long time, while Baekhyun slowly became obsessed with his revenge, learned not to question him, but it seemed like since he brought Dee in their lives, none of them can stay still and silent.
"Both things you just said are the exact opposite of what is going on. Be happy that is just me, trying to make you talk. I had to stop the others from running here and finding out what have you done, that Dee looked like she just went through a major shock," Suho spoke to him in quiet voice, obviously trying not to push him over the edge, but it was exactly what he was doing.
"It's none of your business," he murmured, frowning at his leader. Even though Suho was mostly sweet as honey, he was strict and after giving Baekhyun plenty of time and space for himself, he was losing his patience.
"Wrong, Baek. Everything what concerns you is all our business. You should know that after six years of being in it together," JunMyeon scolded him, making feel Baekhyun worse than he did. He felt guilty in many ways, that's why he was so sensitive.
"Sorry," he murmured, feeling Suho's hand on his shoulder, giving him light squeeze.
"It's okay, but Dee looked seriously bad when she left, you should go after her and fix whatever it is you screwed," he advised him then. Bakehyun looked up at him.
"I wanted to, but Chan stopped me," he admitted, he knew why Chanyeol did it. He had a feeling Chan came to like Dee, not in the romantic way, more like in family member way. Chanyeol was always like this, always caring about other's feelings and now that Dee was counted as a member of their crazy group, he did the same for her. For some kind of reason, it warmed his insides.
"Go..." Suho urged him. Baekhyun didn't wait anymore and was on the way out of the room. He noticed, other's standing behind the door, now looking like they just casually hanging around his bedroom.
"Idiots," he mumbled, with little smile on his face. He rushed out of the apartment and then to his car. This was the second time, this day, he was running to her.
He found girls dormitories without problems. The thing was, boys weren't allowed there, unless it is managers. But he was willing to try his luck. He stopped by the reception.
"I'm here to see my girlfriend," he told the woman in her forties. When she gave him glance, he thought he can only turn around and go, because she looked like, she will do it for him, if he doesn't take his leave. But then her eyes widened, obviously recognizing him.
"Mister Byun," she whispered in shock. "Could I have your autograph," her voice changed into the dreamy one, urging him to smile at her, seeing the older women blush, just by looking at him.
"Sure," he took the notebook, she was handing to him and wrote a dedication. In few minutes he was in the elevator going up. He got the instruction, knowing exactly which flat is the one, where Dee lives. He didn't think about, what is he going to say. He decided to leave it on the fate, stopping in front of the door and pressing the bell button. He knew she is alone at the apartment, at this time, even knowing, that she arrived few minutes before he did, thanks to the very friendly receptionist in the welcoming hall.
He heard steps, getting closer to the door, while being aware of his own heart jumping inside of his chest.
"Who is it?" her voice sounded muffled, behind the closed door and if it was even possible, his heart was beating even faster now.
"It's me," he breathed out, moving closer to the door, knowing in advance, she is not going to open it straight away. She stayed silent for couple of seconds.
"Go back, Baekhyun," she finally said.
"Can we speak for a minute?" she didn't say anything on this, not even when he repeated it. "Open the door, Dee," he begged quietly. She might have gone back to her room, or she might have been still behind the door, waiting for him to get lost.
"Dee," He tried it again. He sighed and leaned his head against the cold surface of the door. He thought of the only one thing he could do right now, which he didn't want to do, from the second they got involved in with each other. To hurt her. But the truth is always painful and if he wants her to be on his side, he doesn't have other choice, than to be honest with her.
"Dee, you wanted to know why I have the letters?" he said, not getting any response from her, but he continued anyway. "I found them two years ago, in his office... in the trash can," he said in a low voice. He thought he heard her breathing, knowing that he just crashed all her remaining fantasies, she had about that bastard.
"I'm sorry I read them, but I'm not sorry for getting to know you through them. And I'm sorry, that he is your father," he wanted to console her in a proper way, wishing to have her in front of him, so he could hug her, but he felt like this is something, she needs to deal with, on her own.
"I still want to help you, if you want to accept it. The conference is tomorrow. I hope you will come," he told her with all the emotions within him. He hoped for her to come. It wasn't only his selfish reasons driving him, he always wanted to help her in any possible way.
