Chapter 11 - What happened in the Tavern
*Amelia*
We walked into a room that was very similar to the room in which I had found Father in. It was about the same size and had a single, circular window on one side that I saw the night sky through. Yet unlike the other room, this one had crates and barrels lining the walls. Making it clear that this was used only for storage. I heard conversation begin again downstairs.
'I told you that I will get it' said Captain O'Malley as she leaned against a barrel, exposing her sword.
As she said that, something clicked in my mind. Something fell into place. The last time the three of us were together...
I had to grab the closest crate for support. They both looked at me.
'You, you wanted treasure ... and then you, you... ' I couldn't bring myself to say it and I prayed on the lion's mane that I was wrong.
Captain O'Malley made a face at my father, 'You said that I wanted treasure?'
'Well you did, didn't you?' Father's eyes narrowed.
'Funny' said the Captain.
'So I was the supposed treasure?' I looked up at both of them weakly.
A group of emotions ran across Father's face. He walked over to me and put his hand on my shoulder. Captain O'Malley stayed where she was.
Father's concerned eyes looked into mine. 'She is your mother, Amelia. Your mother is not dead.'
Moonlight illuminated him as the room seemed to go suddenly darker. The noise of drunken men downstairs seemed to quieten. My mother was not dead. She was here. On the opposite side of the room to me. It made sense.
That must of been why she offered me her ship. It was not because of my 'authority' or 'leadership abilities'. It was because I was the natural heir. I was her daughter.
My mother was Captain O'Malley. A cold-blooded killer. A feared pirate.
My eyes fell on her. How she leant against those barrels, her sword in plain view. Her eyes were not soft like a mother's should be but instead, they were harsh and cold. As she gazed out the window, I noticed that she wasn't even seem bothered that I had just found out that she was my mother. If anything, she looked bored.
That couldn't be right. How could a mother be so uncaring? She couldn't be my mother. I didn't want her to be my mother.
'I-I don't understand.' I said quietly.
Father continued to look at me, the concern in his eyes was only worsening. 'I know it is a lot to take in Amelia...' He started before being interrupted by Captain O'Malley.
'It wasn't the life that I wanted.' She spoke quickly. I noticed that her shoulders had relaxed. She had a strange expression across her face that I couldn't pinpoint.
'I-I wasn't ready.' She continued, 'I only wanted a life full of adventure and I couldn't do that with a child. I felt trapped and I could only think of escape. So, I – I left. I only realised what I had done after it was too late.'
She dropped her face towards the floor and was silent for a second. I had never seen this side of her. She was ashamed and hurt.
Father straightened and turned his body towards her. I could tell he wanted to comfort her, but he stopped himself.
She then looked up at my father 'I didn't realise how different it was. I thought I knew but I was wrong. You know I am an independent person and I knew I couldn't handle a life where I get no say. I am a coward.'
She took a deep breath. Looking at the floor again.
'Athena...' Father started, but again he was cut off by the Captain.
She lifted her head. 'That's not all'
Father slightly leaned towards her. 'Sorry?'
Captain O'Malley swallowed. 'I had a child. I only found out that I was pregnant a few days after I left. By then I couldn't go back. I wouldn't. I couldn't go back to that life because I knew this would be my only chance. If I went back, there was no way out.'
'You have got to be kidding me.' Father whispered. 'Was it mine?'
'Of course, it's yours. Whose else's would it be?'
'You could have given it to me. I could have cared for it.'
The Captain shook her head. 'As soon as he was born, I gave him to an orphanage somewhere. If I gave him back to you then that means I would have had to come back too. By that stage, I had already been gone for nine months. It was too late.'
'Him?' I said quietly.
She looked in my direction and nodded. 'I always wanted a son.'
'What did you name him?' I asked.
'Sidney Thomas Winchester' She looked back at my father. 'He reminded me of you.'
Father tried to speak but couldn't. He was past disbelief. He was completely aghast.
Silence hung in the room for a second, then I spoke, 'Where did the surname come from?'
She looked at me as if I had just asked what colour the sky was 'It's my name.'
'Yes but...'
'O'Malley isn't my actual name you know. My real name is actually Athena Winchester.'
Honestly, I was not surprised. It was common knowledge that pirates often didn't go by their real names. It was a way to further cover their tracks. 'Athena Winchester' in some ways was actually quite fitting for her name.
Father suddenly took a step forward. A cloak of sudden confidence surrounded him. 'Where is he now?'
The Captain almost laughed. 'How do I know? I haven't seen him in 14 years.'
'I could have taken care of him. Given him a home, a family. For all we know he could be on the streets now, begging or worse, dead.'
'Are you blaming me? You have not changed at all, have you? Always blaming the woman. Typical man.' Her hand had gone to her sword.
'Athena, please.' Father took another step forward.
She rolled her eyes. Her hand had left her sword and her hand was now moving towards her coat. 'You are weak. I know you and I know your greatest weakness.' Suddenly with superhuman speed, she pulled a gun on me. I squealed. 'Give me our daughter. I need her.'
'No please, no please stop!' He took a step forward and O'Malley pointed her sword at him with her other hand.
'Why?' I whimpered.
'I am getting old. You may not believe it, but I am getting old and there is no way I am letting any of those excuses of men touch my ship.'
She was desperate for me to replace her as the Captain of the 'Maiden'. But first, she needed Father to give me to her. But he couldn't, I couldn't. I couldn't spend the rest of my life killing hundreds of innocent people purely for enjoyment. I didn't want to be like my mother.
Pure evil seemed to radiate off her. The captain's eyes were wild with the power she now had, and her smile made me tremble even more than I already was.
'You know what happens next' She was almost laughing.
'There is another way. Please.' My father. Head of the Miltary in all of Tanio, pleading.
'Sometimes the unnecessary becomes necessary' She turned the gun to him and as she pointed it, it didn't tremble at all. She didn't even seem bothered that she was about to murder her children's father. I was completely frozen. Terrified of what is going to happen. Terrified of what is going to happen to father.
'No! no please, please stop!' He was crying. Tears were rolling down his face like they were in a race to see who would fall the quickest.
The Captain smirked. 'Make me.'
The bang made me collapse onto the floor. Glass shattered. I felt my head hit the wooden floorboards. I smelt the metallic stench of blood. I tasted a hint of nausea. I heard the thump of a body on the floor and as I looked up I saw my father's body lying still on the floor only about a meter away from me.
I screamed. I screamed and yet no tears came. But as I stared I was unable to move. I felt paralyzed.
There was nothing more in the world for me now. Nothing.
I welcomed death with open arms.
Okayyyy. Wow. That was a crazy chapter.
