48. I take thee...

Aimee helps Josie with her hair, adorning it with a crown of flowers. "You look so beautiful, Jos."

Jack enters the room and stares at his daughter. "You look magnificent."

Aimee smiles while adjusting Josie's dress.

"Aimee, you need to leave to enter with Callum. We're about to start." Jack announces.

Aimee gives her cousin another look over and then hugs her adoringly. "See you out there," she whispers before leaving the room.

Aimee walks down the stairs and makes her way towards the vineyard. They adorned the space in between the rows of vines with olive tree leaves that create a natural green carpet. Aimee takes her brother's arm.

"You look beautiful," he says to his sister while walking down the aisle.

"You should see Josie," Aimee whispers to her brother. "She's breathtaking in that dress."

The crowd stands to allow the two of them to walk through, connoting the start of the wedding procession. The end of the green carpet is a wide space that has an impromptu tent at its centre. In front of the tent, rows of wooden chairs lay gracefully decorated with white gardenias.

Aimee's eyes wander to the guests on her left. She easily spots Ana that is rubbing her growing belly, accompanied by Michael and Paulo, that stands by her side. Paulo smiles proudly to his children but his eyes stray from Aimee's landing on someone else on her right-hand side as if he signalling someone's presence to her.

Aimee's eyes follow his and land on him, who stares back at her. Her breath fails momentarily. Liam is in a full tux, his long locks are now short and his beard is gone. She realises she has never seen Liam without some sort of facial hair before. Her eyes stay glued to the wedding guest.

"Are you okay?" Callum asks.

Aimee nods and takes her position next to the minister. She peels her eyes off of him and attempts to focus on her task as honour attendant.

A guitar strums in the background and gives way for Tessa and her parents to walk through the olive path. Tessa paces down the aisle holding both her parents' arms and Jamie's voice sings from behind Callum.

Once Tessa stands ready, Josie walks down the path with Jack. Josie arrives and Aimee holds her bouquet and takes the chance to steal a glance at Liam. Her eyes once again cross his. He flashes a cheeky grin at her disclosure. Aimee lowers her eyes to her feet, embarrassed.

"Are we ready for the vows?" the officiant asks.

Tessa clears her throat, "I'm not very good with words, as you know. But you have bewitched me from the moment I laid eyes on you at the airport. In that moment, I knew you were the one for me."

A cough is heard from the audience. Aimee lifts her eyes to see Liam choking slightly and taking a moment to regain composure while holding his hand up apologetically.

Josie laughs softly at Liam's embarrassment before proceeding with her own vows. "I wanted to make this really romantic, and I kept researching different quotes that famous people said about loving someone else. I quickly gave up."

The audience chuckles.

"I love you because you accept me as I am. You understand me more than I understand myself. To me, you are home."

Aimee wipes a stubborn tear that falls from her eye and threatens to smudge her make-up. She looks at her father and how he holds Michael's hand. She glances at Eva and Charlie and their shared embrace, and she notices Callum's adoring look at the mother of his unborn child.

Aimee sighs softly and once again looks up at the only man that has ever stolen her heart. The same man that has spent the last days avoiding her, and yet is staring at her unequivocally throughout the ceremony.

They have also embellished the farmhouse for the affair. The wooden ceiling is adorned with fairy lights. Each table centre is embellished with gold lining silverware, and white lilies. The main table has two olive tree branches that decorate the two seats for the brides.

Tessa and her parents, Josie and Jack, and Aimee and Callum, sit at a long table at the back, while they placed the rest of the guests in their own individual tables.

Eva, Charlie and Isabella make their way to their own table, which also accommodates Ana and Paulo.

"Where's Liam?" Paulo asks. "He left right after the ceremony."

"He was called at the Northern. He'll be back a bit later on." Charlie says while pulling his wife's chair for her to sit.

"How are you feeling?" Eva asks Ana that is drinking water slowly after running to the bathroom just after the ceremony.

"Honestly, like a train wreck. I might take Aimee's advice and lay down for a bit," she responds softly.

"Do you remember when I used to get those with Isabella?" Eva asks Charlie.

"How could I forget?" Charlie smirks and holds her hand lovingly.

"Was it the same with Callum and Aimee?" Ana asks.

Eva freezes at her question and glances at Paulo, that smiles back.

"It's a legitimate question. I didn't give birth to my children," he says in a reassuring tone.

Eva smiles gratefully at his kindness. "I think it was actually worse. I used to have it twice a day. With Izzie, it was only mornings."

"Twice a day?" Ana raises her eyebrows.

"Are we talking about sex?" Michael approaches the table and sits down, unbuttoning his jacket with a smirk.

"Mike..." Paulo admonishes. "Please forgive my boyfriend. He has a tendency to have dirty thoughts polluting his mind."

Michael smirks at the innuendo. "I don't believe we have met." He extends his hand to Eva, Charlie, and Isabella. "I'm Michael Evans, Aimee's manager and the lucky guy that gets to date this one." He plants a kiss on Paulo's cheek.

"You're Michael?" Eva asks. "But you two don't know each other?" She points to Charlie and Michael.

Charlie looks at his wife, surprised. "I don't believe I ever had the pleasure."

"Aimee told me you were at University with him." She frowns.

"How? He's Liam's age." Charlie retorts with a chortle.

"Speaking of which, where is that rascal?" Michael says while glancing around, looking for his friend.

Paulo elbows gently at Michael, attempting to hint him of his misgiving, but this is not apparent to Michael's poor soul.

"I saw him at the ceremony. Where is he now?"

"Liam?" Eva questions. "You went to university with Liam?"

Paulo grabs the menu. "Look at this feast. We will definitely put some weight tonight."

He glances at Eva that has an unwavering look towards Michael that is staring back at her in complete obscurity why this woman has so many questions.

Paulo sighs. "Just come clean to them, Michael. This is Eva and Charlie Forsyth. Eva is Aimee's birth mother, and Charlie is..."

"Liam's brother..." Michael finishes the sentence. "I remember you now. You came to get him in London. I was the one that called you."

Charlie's eyes open. "You warned us about Mary and the videos."

Michael's face turns solemn. An expression that is a rarity to his light-hearted spirit. "He stopped talking to me after that. He actually punched me in the stomach."

"You never told me that," Paulo interjects.

"No reason to say anything. The past is the past. Liam knows today I did it because he is my friend and I couldn't stand to see his self-destruction."

Charlie gets up and walks over to him. "I can't ever thank you enough for what you did for him. It didn't stick the first time around, but he's doing okay now."

"He contacted you for Aimee?" Eva asks curiously.

Michael stares at Eva. "He will be really upset with me if this makes her way back to her. We reconnected when he contacted me about her. He got her the audition and asked me to hear her. It was an easy sign-up from there and I'm happy that Aimee is in my life." He eyes Paulo, "For over that just one reason."

Paulo smiles softly at his love proclamation.

"But please don't say a word of this to her."

Eva sighs and her eyes water. "He's kept his promise to stay away from her and yet he was the one that brought her back to music, gave her a career." Eva stares at her daughter, that laughs with Tessa at the main table.

"What promise to stay away?" It's Paulo's turn to probe further. "Have you asked him to stay away from Aimee?"

Eva nods and tears up. "I don't want her to be hurt again."

Paulo's face hardens. "That is not your choice to make. I know my daughter better than anyone else in this restaurant, and I can tell you that keeping him away from her is not the right decision."

"With all due respect, Liam has hurt her. You weren't here for what we witnessed. He is my brother, but his mistakes were unforgivable." Charlie defends his wife's decision.

"I know exactly what that boy has done. I looked him in his eyes the other night. You said so yourself. He is better." Paulo rebuts.

"Yes, but..." Charlie says.

"No buts." Paulo interrupts. "He brought music back to my daughter's life. He kept himself away for all this time and I couldn't figure out why, but now I get it. You have interfered with her choices. The same way my Justin tried to with her music. She needs to learn from her own mistakes. And, some mistakes are worth making." Paulo gets up. "I'm going to get a drink." He walks off the table.

The table at the centre of the restaurant is oblivious to the occurrence at table two.

Aimee leans over and whispers something in her brother's ear before getting up and taking centre stage with Rattlesnake.

"Now let's ask the gorgeous couple to open the dance floor." She announces at the mic and takes her place by the piano. She plays a soft melody with the band to which Josie and Tessa dance before others join them on stage.

Once the song finishes playing, Aimee joins her relatives and friends on the dance floor. Her hips sway to the beat of the music, while whooping and cheering the music track choices being played by the band.

Eva and Charlie make their way to the dance floor and Aimee approaches them.

"Hey," she says with a smile.

Charlie returns the greeting with his open smile. "Aimee! I can't believe I haven't seen you since your arrival!" He approaches her and gives her a tight hug.

"Hey Charlie. I know, I should have come around the house, but just the whole wedding and baby stuff has kept me really busy." She eyes Eva, assuring herself that her half excuses have convinced her. "Anyway, I never got the chance to thank you for everything you did for me. I swapped dad and Michael to your table to make sure you guys could catch-up."

Charlie gets visibly flustered. "Michael? Oh..."

"It was a pleasure." Eva cuts in. "And maybe you can come around the house for a dinner or something. Something casual. I really would like to speak a bit with you before you leave."

Charlie stares at his wife, trying to find out why she covered for the lie she just uncovered, and especially after being admonished by Paulo about it.

"I'll try to come and see you..." Aimee wavers.

"Please do. Isabella would love to spend some more time with you." Eva says with a wavering tone in her voice.

Aimee looks across the room and notices that Liam just entered the room. His bow and white shirt are now untied. He talks animately with Paulo by the entrance.

"I'll come by the day after tomorrow for dinner." She blurts, secretly hoping that would mean his presence in the familiar house, knowing well that wouldn't be the case.

Eva's face lights up. "That's so great to hear!"

"Sorry, but may I cut in for a dance?"

Callum's voice from behind her force Aimee to peel her eyes from Liam.

"Of course, mate," Charlie says while holding his wife's arm. "See you, Aimee."

Aimee takes Callum's hand and sways to the song.

"A dance with me, hey?"

"What can I say? I'm a brilliant brother."

Aimee laughs and Callum spins her around, placing her again in view of Liam, that is staring in her direction while talking to Paulo and other people that have joined the conversation.

"Are my dancing skills still okay?"

"You still have three left feet, I'm afraid." Aimee jokes.

Callum chuckles. "I'm hopeless, but you taught me enough for the school dance, so I'm thinking you could do the same for the wedding."

"A bit too late for that, too." Aimee smirks.

"I meant my wedding..." He retorts.

"You proposed?"

Callum looks down at his own feet, trying to avoid tripping on Aimee's feet while juggling his uncoordinated moves. "No yet. Tonight is about Tessa and Josie. But, soon. She's the mother of my unborn child, and I love her so much."

"You guys fit together. It's perfect."

"I wanted to ask what you think first. Maybe help me pick up a ring?" he says hopefully.

"I think she's a brilliant girl and, of course, I will!" Aimee gives Callum a tight embrace.

"Stay back," Callum finally blurts out. "I haven't seen you for two years. I don't want to spend another two years until I see you again. If you move here permanently, then pai will follow you. I know that. He's only back there because of you."

Aimee lowers her eyes to the dance floor. Part of her wants to say yes, but the thought of seeing Liam often when he has moved on from her makes her heart hurt.

"I'm always at performances. I travel constantly." She offers as an excuse.

"But, when you're not travelling, you would be here. With me and your nephew." Callum offers a counter-argument.

"What?" she raises her voice.

"Shush..." he says. "Is still a secret..."

"Along with everything else." She smirks. "Whooohooooo!"

Aimee screams and the guests look at her in surprise.

"I'm just so happy about this wedding!" She exclaims and laughs with her brother on the dance floor.

Their gaze falls to Ana that shares a knowing smile.

"Will she be mad?"

"About me telling you about the baby?"

Aimee nods in response.

"It was her idea." He smiles adoringly at his love.

Aimee sees them both glancing at each other and wishes she could partake in something similar.

"You should get her on the dance floor," she whispers and smiles at her brother while encouraging him to get the love of his life.

She lowers her head, with thoughts of a past love polluting her mind, and starts making her way outside of the dance floor towards the balcony.

A hand grabs her gently and stops her. "Care to dance?" His voice is sweet and low.

Aimee nods and allows Liam to guide her back to the dance floor, where their bodies sway to the end of the music.

As if on cue, the band plays a slower tune, and Liam comes closer to Aimee.

He places his right arm on her lower back, while gently steering her hand into his left. "Is this okay?"

"Yes," she whispers while gazing into his eyes.

"Love this song."

"I don't know it."

"The promise by Tracy Chapman." His hand presses gently on her back to approach their bodies closer to one another. "It resonates with me."

Aimee feels the heat from his body irradiating and leans gently in his torso. "I saw you talking to my dad."

Liam chuckles, and she feels the vibrations against her face, but he keeps silent.

"Does he know who you are?" she probes and Liam hums in response. "I'm just surprised seeing you two so chummy with one another..."

"It's killing you, isn't it?"

Aimee peels herself from his embrace and stares at his blue eyes.

"He told me to dance with you."

"Oh..."

Liam laughs out loud.

"What?" she frowns.

"You haven't changed a bit. I'm glad to see the inquisitive Aimee is still around. Always trying to get the answers you need to have." He smirks.

"I'm not like that." Aimee rebuts.

"Yeah, you are. I've never opened to someone before like I did with you." He stops himself momentarily before regaining courage. "I know I wasn't open with everything with you..." He looks into her eyes. "Trust me when I say you knew my deepest thoughts that no one ever did before."

"You too."

Liam raises his eyebrows.

"I told you things I've never said to anyone else. Outside of pai and Callum, I mean."

"I know..." he whispers. "I'm sorry for betraying your confidence in me. For making you feel you couldn't trust me. For being untrustworthy."

"Okay."

"Okay?" Liam raises his eyebrow.

"Okay" she reiterates.

They gaze into each other eyes.

Aimee feels his thumb rub gently on her back. "You shaved."

Liam chuckles. "Needed to make some sort of good impression in this family for once. Shaved, got a haircut, the total works."

"You look great." She blurts out.

"You look beautiful," he responds.

Aimee's face reddens.

"But then you always do." He removes his hand from her back and cups her face, oblivious to the number of people that surround them on the dance floor. "I miss talking to you, pommie. I miss your energy, your enthusiasm, your argumentation skills..." He rubs his thumb on her cheek lovingly.

"I miss you too. I miss talking to you. I miss surfing with you. Every concert I wish you were there with me, listening to me play."

Liam closes his eyes and touches her forehead softly, losing himself in her scent. He opens his eyes and lingers a kiss to her temple. His eyes fall to Callum, that stares at him sternly. "I shouldn't have done that."

"Done what? Kiss my forehead? Touch my face?" Aimee probes.

"I'm sorry. I can't be who you deserve to be with." He removes his touch from her body and stands awkwardly.

"Liam... I miss you too." Aimee takes his hand in her own. "I miss you so much that it hurts."

Liam's breath catches. It was the alcohol in his system. The liquid courage he drained in his veins at the Northern to endure the night without her in his arms. The damn alcohol made him stupid. Why did he listen to Paulo?

His ears listen to the last lines of the song playing in the background. Her face still stoically staring at him, awaiting a response. The song just betrays everything he wishes he could do, but he's forbidden to do so.

Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I'll find my way back to you
Please say you'll be waiting

He stares at her eyes and just behind her twin brother's gaze. The promise that keeps her away from him. He removes his hands.

"I can't afford to make the same mistakes again," he says with a sad voice.

Aimee's face falters. "Mistakes? I was a mistake?"

Liam wavers, "I... I need to go."

Liam walks back to the balcony, leaving Aimee alone on the dance floor.
