43. Back to the Bay

Playing in the same place where Romola Costantino played in 1973 is a dream come true. Aimee's last performance in the concert hall at the Sydney Opera House is the last show of the season.

It's been two years since she left the Land Down Under and the invitation to play a concerto at one of the most iconic buildings in the world is everything a young artist can wish for. With the last note on her piano, the hall lifted with the thunder of 2,000 pairs of hands saluting her performance rhythmically.

Aimee graces the stage and bows to her audience who release some cheers to accompany the beat of the applause. Aimee leaves the stage to her right and makes her way back to the dressing room. She walks inside the backstage room that is adorned with a dozen of red roses.

She walks to the bouquet and looks for a card, to no avail.

"The mystery continues, I see..." Michael leans at the door, smiling with his hands in his pockets.

"Just come out and say it. This is from you."

He shoots an indignant look and takes his hands to his heart in an exaggerated expression.

"You wound me, belle. Trust me, if it was from me, you would know." He walks inside the room and looks at the roses. "They are exquisite. As always."

"Yes, they are amazing." Aimee responds and touches lightly one rosebud. "Should I worry?"

For the last year, in all of her last performances, there is an intricate arrangement of flowers in her dressing room. Delivered when she's performing and without a signal of whom is the sender of such a gift.

"If it was a stalker, we would know by now. You're not Whitney Houston and this is definitely not the Bodyguard, although Kevin Costner was quite yummy in his heyday." Michael smirks while sitting on the small red sofa by the private restroom.

Aimee rolls her eyes at Michael and goes behind a dark wooden room divider to change her clothes.

"Are you excited about tomorrow?" Michael asks while steering his attention to the notifications on his phone.

"I guess..." Aimee takes her dress off and puts it on top of the divider. "Honestly, I'm nervous."

He glances up from his phone. "You shouldn't be nervous. You are going to see your family. Not meet the Queen."

Aimee chuckles while putting on a pair of jeans. "Yeah, you're right. There's nothing to worry about." Aimee takes a shirt and puts it on. "What time is the flight?"

"At 11 a.m. I've arranged for a wake-up call and a taxi to take you to the airport," he responds, while typing furiously on his phone.

Aimee walks out from behind the divider. "You're really not coming?"

Michael gets up and buttons up his suit. "I need to stay back and deal with some matters. Two weeks' holidays, missy, and then we are back in London to the recording studio," he reminds her.

She dismisses his words with her hand. "Yes, I know..." she glances at the flowers and picks them up.

"You're going to take them?"

"Always."

"Let's go. I'm starving."

The white van stops in front of the familiar farmhouse and Aimee walks out and glances around the estate. It looks exactly as she remembers from two years back. The driver picks up the bags and drops them near her feet, and Aimee tips him in return.

"Oh, my god!" That voice is unmistakable even though Aimee still can't locate where is coming from. "You're here!" Josie runs towards Aimee and jumps on her neck in excitement. "I can't believe you're here!"

Aimee embraces her cousin. "Missed you, Jos."

"Look what the cat dragged in..."

Aimee opens her eyes and smiles at Tessa. "I could say the same thing. Aren't you in wrong island?" she chirps amusedly.

Tessa throws her arms around her friend and the three hug one another. "Missed you, man."

"Missed you too, Tessa." She looks at the both of them. "Who knew I was going to be such an effective cupid?"

"There's so much happening. So much we need to talk!" Josie squeals in excitement.

"Babe, before you get all excited about it. Give the artiste some time to breathe, hey?"

"Artiste? I like the sound of that..." a male voice says from behind them.

Aimee squeals and runs towards Callum, that descends the stairs. Callum's hair is longer, and he's got more tanned with the continued exposure to the sun.

Aimee embraces her twin. "Hey, feisty... welcome back."

Aimee smiles at her nickname. "I've missed you so much."

Callum holds her close. "I know. Me too. I'm so glad you are here."

After the excitement dies out, Josie takes Aimee to their old room to put down her bags. "You don't mind staying here with my dad?"

Aimee sits by the bed she had previously occupied. "Are you kidding? I'm looking forward to it!" She looks at her cousin. "So, you and Tess are living together, hey?"

Josie blushes. "We are trying. The going back and forth was hard. She's working at a farm as the in-house vet, but we're hoping to save some money so she can open her own practice."

"Are you happy?"

Josie nods enthusiastically.

"Good. If you are happy, then I'm happy."

Josie sits down by the bed. "What about you? Are you seeing anyone?"

Aimee looks down to the bedding and contours the tiny flowers printed on the bed with her fingers.

"No one serious, some flings here and there, but I'm travelling so much that can't find the time or the will to have a serious relationship."

Josie nods and lowers her eyes to the floor. Aimee senses she's holding back something.

"You're okay there?"

"Me? Yeah, of course. Just glad you're back." Josie gets up from the bed. "Freshen up and I'll see you in the kitchen. Dad is on his way back from the bank. He's excited to see you again."

Aimee nods and Josie leaves, leaving her alone in the bedroom.

Aimee takes a quick shower and changes her clothes. She types a message to Michael and her dad to say she's in the farmhouse. She leaves the room and makes her way to the kitchen where she can hear laughing. Inside the kitchen are Callum, Josie, Tessa, and Jack.

"Hello there." She greets her uncle.

Jack looks at her and squeezes her into his arms. "My niece is here!"

"Uncle Jack, you're cutting my air circulation," Aimee says, and Jack steps back.

Callum laughs out loud.

"Let me make you something to eat." Jack inspects her from head to toes. "You're looking far too skinny."

Aimee shakes her hand. "Not hungry. Could use a glass of water, though."

Jack smiles and goes to the fridge to get a bottle of water and gives it to Aimee, that sits down.

"So tell us everything." Jack says. "How is it like?"

Aimee smiles. "Brilliant, amazing and exhausting. I'm just thrilled to see everyone."

"Have you told her the news?" Jack says enthusiastically.

"News?"

"We were giving her some breathing room before saying anything," Callum says.

"You're making me curious now. What's the news?"

Callum sits beside his sister. "Well, there's quite a few of them."

"I think you should go first," Josie interjects.

"My thing or our thing?" he asks Josie cryptically.

Aimee's eyes dart between the two of them. "You are definitely killing me with the suspense here."

"You need to tell your news first." Josie beams.

Callum clears his throat and nods. "Ana is pregnant."

Aimee's eyes widen. "Oh, my god! Are you serious? I'm going to be an aunty?"

Callum laughs with tears in his eyes. Aimee embraces her brother.

"This is the best news! How far along is she?"

"She's 6 weeks in. You have no idea how much I wanted to have told you straight away, but Ana wanted to make it a surprise."

"And where is Ana?"

"Her morning sickness has already kicked in. She is a recluse in the morning, but she'll come by in the afternoon. We were thinking of going to the beach after lunch?"

"That sounds like an awesome plan."

"Callum and I will leave you, Tess and Ana there first, as we need to take care of something first."

Aimee eyes her cousin with suspicion.

Tessa laughs. "She's barely containing her curiosity."

Callum puts his arm around his sister. "That's the other news." He looks up at his cousin. "Josie and I are going into business together. We're opening a hotel in the Bay. It's an old hotel that sunk a few years back and we are renovating the place. Josie will run the hotel and I'll run the restaurant."

"Wow. That is some serious news. I can't believe it! But where did you guys get the money?"

Josie exchanges a glance with Callum. "We have a partner."

"A partner? Like an investor?" Aimee asks.

Josie clears her throat. "It's a friend. He has other businesses in the area and is more experienced than the two of us."

"He's more of a silent partner..." Callum intervenes.

"As long as they are profitable, if not, he will not be very silent about it," Tessa says amusedly.

"We have a meeting with him at one of his places, so we'll leave you guys at the beach and then meet you there. It's only five minutes away, anyway." Callum states.

"Wow, this is a lot to take in."

Tessa clears her throat and looks at Josie.

"That's not the last piece of news," Jack says, smiling adoringly at his daughter. "We're also having a wedding in a few weeks here." He points at Josie and Tessa.

Aimee gets up and runs to them. "Are you serious?" she squeals in excitement. "And I only hear about this now?"

"Surprise!" Josie says.

Aimee embraces her.

"So, Callum is going to be one of our honour attendants and we would like you to be the other..." she says softly in Aimee's ear.

Aimee places a kiss on her cousin's cheek. "Of course! Of course! Of course! When is the wedding?"

"In seven days." Tessa replies.

"Your dad is also on his way."

"Why are you guys not telling me these things in advance?" she chuckles with her eyes brimmed with tears from all the emotions.

Callum gets up and wipes his nose to avoid showing any sentimentality. "Okay, we have a plan."

Aimee smiles. "We're off to the beach this afternoon."

"And tomorrow it's wedding stuff day!" Josie smiles brightly.

Callum's phone rings. "Give me one second." He picks up the phone and leaves the room.

"My brother is so serious..." Aimee chuckles. "Hey Josie, do you still have a surfboard? I haven't surfed in a while, but I think I would like to do it again while I'm here."

Josie smiles. "Better yet. I have your board still in storage."

Aimee's heart somersaults at the image of her board and the person who gifted her the wooden plank.

"I've used it a few times. I have my own. Honestly, it needs some TLC." Tessa says. "Why don't I drive you to the surfboard place to get it waxed and stuff so it's ready for this afternoon?"

"That's a great idea! Aimee, why don't you go with Tessa? Callum and I need to head back anyway to the hotel." Josie says.

"When do I get to see it?" Aimee asks.

"Tomorrow I'll take you there. Promise." Josie says. "Babe, take Aimee and look after her board."

"Tessa can go by herself." Jack intervenes and pointedly glares at his daughter.

"It's her board." Josie insists.

"But Aimee just arrived and needs to rest." Jack glares at Josie.

"Aimee needs to go." Josie stubbornly responds.

"Don't fight now. I want to check the Bay out and catch up with the Kiwi." Aimee muses.

"Aimee? Are you planning to see Izzie?" Jack asks.

Aimee looks at her bottle. "Of course. I just need to gather the courage to see Eva, too."

"Are you guys not talking to each other?" Josie enquires.

"Oh, we are, but it's sporadic. I don't know... it will be weird, I guess."

"Let me get the board and put it in the car. Meet me outside." Tessa responds and gets up.
