28. The truth

The ride back to the Forsythe's is stone-cold silent apart from Charlies' constant calls to Eva and Matt. Liam stays with his head low and glances at his phone and her number. He attempts to write numerous texts to her but with each long paragraph his thumbs fire on the smart screen, his resolve fades and he proceeds to slowly delete each letter he has typed previously.

Charlie pulls up the car and Liam finally looks up to the world outside his own mind. Matt's car is on the driveway signalling his presence in the household. Liam enters the house with his head hanging low and his hands in his jacket tugging the smartphone that stubbornly calls him to her. He drags his feet towards the staircase. His body is numb, and his eyes beg to be shut forever.

"Where do you think you are going?" Charlie warns him the moment his foot hits the first step of the staircase. "You have really done it now, Liam." Charlie avoids looking at his younger brother and chooses to instead focus his eyes on his wife. "Where's Isabella?"

"At a friends' house for a sleepover," Eva responds softly.

"Sit down" he commands Liam.

"I want to go to bed." Liam retorts as if he is a young teenager being reprimanded by his parents.

Charlie turns around and springs towards Liam. He picks him up by his collar, ruffles his t-shirt and shoves him to the sofa. "You're not going fucking anywhere."

Eva stares at her husband alarmed, "What happened at the airport?"

Charlie walks to the bar and pours a whiskey and drowns it.

Matt is leaning on the pillar, with his face battered from the altercation of the night before, and stares intently at his siblings.

"Tell us everything." Charlie directs his order to Liam.

Liam pulls his hair back and stares at the piano. He recalls every second that she's played. His heart tightens at the words she professed at the airport, and his gut twists at the thought of the intimacy shared the previous night. He loves her unconditionally. He loves her like he never loved anyone before, and he has lost her before he even got to win her over in the first place.

"Liam..." Charlie says while pouring another whiskey.

"Maybe you should go easy on those, mate," Matt says clearly concerned by Charlie's mood.

"Tell us!" Charlie shouts.

Liam shivers at his tone, "I didn't know she was recording them."

"Who was recording what?" Eva asks lifting her eyes to her husband.

"How long have you been in contact with Mary again?" Charlie finally spills.

Liam rubs his face, "We've never really stopped."

Eva walks towards the window and turns her back to the three men.

Matt dislodges from the pillar that bore his weight. "What? After everything she put you through, you are still in contact with her?"

Charlie drowns another glass of the brown liquid. "Oh, they are doing so much more than that. Are you not dear little brother?" His eyes are glossy from the alcohol and the anger coursing through his veins.

Liam lowers his eyes to the ground, "I didn't know she was recording." he repeats and grabs his head in utter humiliation.

Eva turns around and looks at Liam. "What is she recording exactly?"

Liam looks up at Eva with tears in his eyes. This is a woman that always protected him and cared for him. A woman that didn't have to but chose to.

"It started as a dare. We started talking and meeting a couple of times online. We engaged in..." Liam takes his eyes off Eva ashamed at his next words, "sexual games."

"Fucking hell..." Matt says through gritted teeth.

Liam sighs, "At first it was just the two of us but then she started telling me she wanted to watch me... with other women." Liam places his hands over his head. "I don't even know how it evolved... I know it's fucked up but I swear I didn't know she was recording these."

"How many are we talking about? Charlie asks, his voice cool as ice.

"I don't know... around seven I guess," Liam says and Eva gasps at the revelation.

"You guess?" Matt raises his voice, "How the fuck are you guessing this shit? You could never keep it in your pants, hey Liam?"

"And, Taylor Anderson is one of those girls?" Charlie pours another glass of the brown liquid.

Liam glares at Matt that is now clenching his fists in anger. "She was the last one, yes."

"And, the others?" Matt asks. "Are they also clients?"

Liam shakes his head and stares at Eva that has tears on her face and stands shocked staring back at the young man she always protected. "Are these people in our circle?" she asks in a whisper.

"Some" Liam mutters.

"Grace?" Charlie asks in a low rumble.

"Yes," he responds mechanically.

Matt throws his glass at the wall in anger. "All of these girls have been recorded performing sexual acts on you?"

"I'm not sure how many were recorded. I didn't record them. Mary did. I only know about Taylor."

"You don't know? Then, you fucking ask her!" he shouts, "You're going to lose us our company, our reputation, my campaign. Your fucking dick will make us lose everything dad worked for. Everything me and Charlie have been working so hard to maintain!"

Silence fills the room. "It's time you own your actions. I need you to place a few calls. We need to find a recovery centre, somewhere remote." Charlie turns his attention to his wife that looks angrily at him.

"Recovery centre?" Liam asks "You want to send me to a recovery centre for what? I'm not an addict."

"But, you are. Because if you're not broken, then that means you are just plain evil to do what you did to those girls. So, right now I'm choosing to believe that my little brother is still in there somewhere and that I can get him free of whatever demons haunt him because if I can't then I have no other choice to get him out of my life, if only for my wife's and daughter's sake."

Liam stills with Charlies' words and Matt disappears to the courtyard holding his phone.

"Sit down while we get you a place. I need to call our lawyers and see what can we do about recovering and deleting the videos."

"I want to have a shower."

"You can have a shower when you arrive at whatever hell Mark will be sending you." Charlie glares at Liam coldly. "Don't fucking move a muscle." and takes his leave.

Liam sits down and his head spins. He glances up and sees Eva staring at him. Her eyes are swollen with sadness. Her face reminds her of another girl that stood with puffed-up eyes staring at him in the same way as his sister-in-law is doing right that minute.

"Did you record Aimee?" she asks softly.

"I would never do that to her" he responds.

"Was she one of them?" Liam stares at Eva. He doesn't want to let her know the truth. "Liam, tell me."

"When we met at the beach and she had her meltdown in the restaurant. I told Mary about her. She told me to..." he is unable to finish the thoughts of his previous misdeeds.

"Why? What could she possibly do to deserve that?"

Liam stills at her words. "She didn't do anything to deserve it. I'm the one that is fucked up."

Eva sits down and shakes her head incredulously. "I've always had your back, and you do this to her of all people..."

"But, I didn't do it. Not after getting to know her. Not after Izzie's party. Everything changed then. I told Mary that I wouldn't do it." Liam raises his eyebrows, "I told her yesterday to stop calling me. Shit..." he rubs his face, "I told her that..."

Eva raises her hand to stop him from talking further. "How long have you been toying with my daughter's feelings?"

"Eva, I love Aimee... I promise..." Liam's brain recollects her Freudian slip. "Wait, what did you say?"

Eva's face stands still in horror at her own words.

"Did you just call her your daughter?" Liam gets up and stands across Eva that has her hands over her mouth in utter horror at the disclosure. "Your daughter? Aimee is your daughter?"

"Liam, please..." Eva retorts.

"Wait... Does she know this? Of course, she doesn't..."

Eva gets up. "Please..."

"You've been lying to her all this time." He spins around himself in the room. "Fuck! Fuck!"

"Let's go. It's all sorted. The jet is waiting for us." Matt announces when he re-enters the room.

"I'm not fucking going with you." Liam stands defensively and glares at Eva.

"You are going with both of us. We are leaving now." Charlie walks back into the room accompanied by Benjamin. "Ben, please gather some of his clothes. We are leaving in five minutes."

Liam glances back at Eva that stands with her hands clutched on her belly. "You talk about me but you've deceived her too"

Charlie glances at Eva and sees her terrified look.

"You said..."

"Whatever it is, it can wait," Charlie interjects.

Liam stares at his brother, trying to understand what is happening, his brow creases. "Do you know?"

Charlie stands silent and puts his hands inside his pocket.

"Oh my god, you fucking know?"

"Know what?" Matt interjects, "Is there any more fucking skeletons in this fucking family?" He glances at Liam and Charlie waiting for an answer.

Eva lowers her eyes to the floor, her hands trembling and Charlie stares at Liam with terror in his eyes at his next words.

"Nothing" Liam finally says.

Eva looks up at Liam in shock.

"No other skeletons. Just my fucked up head." He glares at Eva, "I'm sorry for hurting you and your family."

Benjamin comes down the stairs and lowers a small duffel bag on the floor. Liam picks it up. "You should stay back and take care of your family. Matt can accompany me," he says to Charlie. "And, perhaps Charlie can help you, Eva, to face your own demons."

Matt raises an eyebrow at his comment.

"And, don't worry, I will stay away from now on. I promise." He walks out and enters the car waiting to be taken to the airport.

"What the hell does he mean by that?" Matt asks Eva and Charlie.

Charlie shrugs in response.

"I think you should come with us. I might kill him on the way to the airport."

"I should handle the Mary situation and warn dad," Charlie responds and steals a glance at his wife.

Matt ponders his words. "Yeah, it's the best. I'll text you when he's checked in." Charlie nods and Matt takes his leave.

Eva drops to the floor. Charlie walks over to his wife and holds her. "What happened?"

Eva sobs uncontrollably. "It just slipped." She says, "It just slipped..."

"Baby, you need to tell me what happened?"

"He hurt my Aimee." Charlie freezes at her words. "I didn't mean to say it but before I realised it just came out. He knows."

Charlie takes his wife in an embrace, knowing that this disclosure was about to shake their world.
