13. Revelations
The next morning, Aimee wakes up with a grin from ear to ear when she remembers the passionate moments shared with Liam at the festival. His insistence in giving her a lift back to the farmhouse and the heated make-out session that followed inside his red truck. The anticipation of seeing him again at Izzie's birthday party sets her heart alight and, for the first time, the blonde surfer eclipses any anticipation for the upcoming New Zealand trip.
"Where were you last night?" Josie asks while lazying on the twin bed next to Aimee. "You just disappeared."
Aimee rolls in bed and crosses her legs up in the air with a smile on her face. "Liam."
Josie sprints and sits on her bed. "You were with Liam?"
Aimee nods and starts scrolling on her smartphone.
"Is that all I'm getting?"
"Yes." Aimee widens her smile when her phone buzzes.
"Is he texting you right now?"
"Yes." Aimee gets up and heads towards the bathroom, leaving the door slightly ajar.
Josie looks at her fingers nervously. "What time is your flight?"
"Half-past midnight," she responds. Aimee walks out with the toothbrush inside her mouth. "I'm thinking I'll get my things sorted now and pack my bag. I'll be back from Eva's by 6ish, and then make my way directly there."
The phone buzzes again, and she heads to the bed while brushing her teeth. She looks at the message and blushes.
"You're all smitten," Josie says in a hushed exhale.
Aimee walks back to the bathroom, holding her phone and texting the sender. Josie gets up and paces softly between the two beds.
"I think we should talk."
"What?" Aimee asks while the sound of the water drowns the clarity of Josie's words.
Josie approaches the bathroom door and cracks it open. Inside, Aimee bites slightly on her bottom lip while grinning from ear to ear with the flurry of texts she's receiving.
Josie makes a face. "We should talk."
Aimee stares at her cousin momentarily before returning her attention to the smartphone. "About what?" Aimee walks past her cousin back to the bedroom. "All yours."
Josie leans at the door. "About you and Liam"
Aimee drops the phone on the bed and opens her closet and starts placing them on the bed to select for her upcoming trip. "What about Liam and I?"
Josie takes a deep breath. "Liam is a great guy, and I know I teased you the other day about liking him, but I thought it was just a crush... I just didn't think you liked him this much..."
Aimee takes a dress and inspects it, trying to decide if she should go in the travel pile or not. "We're just hanging out."
Josie takes two steps towards her cautiously. "I'm just asking you to be careful. Liam is complicated. His whole life is complicated. I don't want you to get hurt."
Aimee glares angrily at her cousin. "I don't get it. A few days back, you were pushing me to him, but now suddenly you're pulling back?"
Josie lowers her eyes to the wooden floor, knowing very well that Aimee's words were true. "I thought you were just flirting with one another." She walks back to her bed and sits down. "Just promise me you'll be careful with him."
"As I said, we're just friends." Aimee knowingly lies.
A loud thump screeches the conversation to a halt.
"Jack!" Callum's voice thunders across the house. Callum's face contorts with anger. A crippled lump of paper crunched in his right hand. "Jack!" he screams again, and the middle-aged man walks into the living area to meet his nephew.
"Callum, what happened?"
Callum stares at him, anger pouring out of him. "Did you know about this?"
Jack looks confused. "Know what?"
Aimee and Josie enter the room, stunned by the loud commotion.
"What's happening here?" Aimee asks.
Jack shrugs, and Callum veers to his sister. "We've been played."
Aimee stares at him, confused. "Who has been played?"
Jack takes one step towards Callum. "Let's talk calmly about whatever got you so riled up, son."
Callum's eyes dart at him in anger. "Don't call me that."
Jack's body freezes, and he glances at the piece of paper in his hands.
Aimee takes Callum's left hand in her own. "Please, calm down. What's happening?" She's never seen her brother scream at anyone like this before.
Callum's eyes dart to his twin sister. "I got the adoption papers."
Aimee exhales a breath she didn't know she was holding.
"They blacked out her name. Something about a closed adoption process." Callum whispers and grips her hand.
"We always knew there was a chance of that happening. But there's no reason for you to be acting like this, particularly not to uncle Jack."
Callum's eyes dart back at her and he smirks, "Shall I tell her, or do you want to have the courtesy of telling her, uncle Jack?"
Jack darts his eyes to the floor, embarrassed.
"What the hell is happening?" Josie says impatiently and rips the piece of paper from Callum's hands. Josie opens the papers and squints at the information in the paper. "I don't get it. What's the fuss about?" Josie stares at Callum incredulously.
"Read it out loud."
Josie reads from the paper. "Aimee Sarah Adams, born in Byron Bay, Australia..." She glances at Callum. "Continue," Josie sighs and proceeds, "Mother, unknown. Father, Justin Theodore Adams..."
Aimee's eyes widen. "Wait, what?"
Callum nods in Aimee's direction. "Repeat that last thing."
Josie stares at them. "What? The father thing?"
Jack takes two steps towards the siblings. "Please, let me explain..."
Josie stares at the three of them, perplexed. "I don't get it. What's the problem?"
Aimee's face stares impassively at Jack. "The problem is that we were always told Justin and Paulo adopted us."
Josie's eyes widen, "Oh, shit."
"Did you know?" Callum directs his question to Jack.
Jack takes a deep breath. "Yes."
Callum spins around himself and places his hands on his head, grunting in frustration. Aimee's eyes tear up.
"Why did they hide this from us?" Aimee's voice wavers.
Jack shakes his head. "You'll have to ask that to Paulo."
Callum grunts, "He was our real dad?"
"Is this for real?" Aimee shouts and paces around the room. "He was our real dad?" muttering to herself.
Callum takes the paper from Josie's hand. "Who is she?"
"I don't know," Jack says.
Callum laughs maniacally, "As if I believe anything you have to say."
Jack sits down on the sofa and runs his hands over his thinning hair. "I only found out about you two when he came down with Paulo to adopt you."
"Sorry, but I find that hard to believe," Aimee says, siding with her brother.
"I suspect who she may be, but I don't know for certain." He looks up at Aimee.
Callum's face twists in anger, "Who is she? You're going to help us find her! You hear me?"
Aimee darts to Callum and puts her hand on his arm. "What? No! Leave this be. Let's go home!"
Callum shakes her hand away from his arm. "Home? What home? Back to the house and a father that has lied to us for all these years? He could have said something! One of them could! I came to find answers, to find her, and I'm not leaving until I do!"
"Let's talk about this when we return from New Zealand." Aimee attempts to placate his anger.
Callum scoffs, "I'm not going. I came here to find the woman that wrote that letter, and I will find her no matter what."
"Tessa is waiting for us," Aimee whispers.
"Tessa is waiting for you. I know you don't want me to find her, but I will not rest until I figure out this complete story, and that begins with her. You leave. You're only here to make my life difficult, anyway."
"Callum!" Jack interjects.
Callum grabs a set of keys from the dinner table. "I'll come for my things later."
Aimee's eyes dart to him in surprise. "Where you're going?"
Callum stares coldly at his uncle. "Somewhere away from all of you."
Jack gets up. "Callum, there's no need for this. Stay here, we will talk. I said I would help you."
"Like I'm going to believe anything that comes from your mouth, Jack."
Aimee takes two steps towards her brother, pleading. "I'll stay back and we'll find her together."
Callum shakes his head. "Just go. You shouldn't have come in the first place. You don't want any part in this, and I don't want you with me when I find her, either." He leaves the room, leaving a teary Aimee sitting on the ground.
