Prologue

Over 2500 years ago, Engla Land: Potterverse

Gaia leaned against the wall in the back of the room just opposite the door. Her fellow witches and wizards were pacing or looking at the doorway in a state of worry. The stone room which was covered in small cracks was dully lit with a single torch.

"Where could she be? She should have been here by now," Constantine said from his spot in the room, his foot tapping on the stone beneath his feet, making a slight echo in the enclosed room.

"She knows how important this is. Why must she get distracted now, of all times?" Olympia asked from her action of pacing back and forth, each step adding to the echo of Alistair's taps. It wasn't long before a woman ran through the entrance to the room.

"Apologies for being late! Aurum did not want to get into his enclosure," Maia said as she panted. Gaia pushed herself off the wall and walked over her spot in the circle, facing the doorway.

"Alright, let us begin the ritual," Gaia said. Everyone began to move into the positions they were assigned before they had begun the preparations for the ritual several weeks ago. A few of them looked nervous, unsure if this would work or not. "Do not worry, my friends. Everything will be alright," Gaia reassured. They were standing in a circle, going clockwise. It was Gaia, Constantine, Olympia, Odysseus, Anastasia, Aegeus, Maia, and then Demitrius. They grabbed the hands of their neighbours as the four ancient symbols of old began to glow. The symbols meant reincarnation, protection, safety, and balance. They had been drawn weeks before so that they could gain more magical potency. Gaia began the first repetition of the chant before everyone else joined in.

As the eight of them began to chant in the ancient language, they poured their magic into the very words they spoke. Their veins began to glow a bluish-white colour and they each felt each other as they suddenly felt stronger. The glowing grew brighter the longer they chanted. Soon enough, they began to feel the strain as the pain began to overwhelm them. They continued chanting and it began to echo as white spheres exited their bodies. They floated around in a circle in the centre as they flashed through a multitude of colours. They pulsed before returning to white and going back into the bodies they came from.

The chanting stops and the light from their veins die out. One by one, they began to collapse to the floor, unconscious. Gaia struggled to stay standing as everyone fell to the ground. She fell just after Aegeus fell unconscious. Gaia collapses against the far wall and watches the doorway in a daze. She expected to pass out from exhaustion like the rest of her members. Though she was glad she didn't pass out as she heard the echo of footsteps coming from down the hall. Gaia internally growled. Intruders really did come late at night to try and kill them.

"Protegat," Gaia said, using the small amount of unstrained magic still inside her to activate the fortress' defences. Thankfully she managed to finish just as a group of wizards and witches entered the room. Their orange clothing immediately gave away that they were from an enemy clan. Gaia heard them say things as they pointed their wands at each of them.

As the lights began to hit each member, she could feel their life forces leave their bodies. Despite the fact that they were being killed, Gaia smirked. Their organisation has used so much magic around the fortress for the past few centuries that the castle gained a mind of its own. Tarlington Fortress would not just stand by as its last occupants were killed. Mere seconds before Gaia was killed, she could hear the echoing screams coming down the hallway as the Fortress began to kill the intruders.

All around the fortress, witches and wizards alike were killed by traps or spells that came from each other. As the final enemy fell dead, the fortress grew cold. The wind was blowing outside and, despite the open windows, everything in the fortress stayed still as if frozen in time.

Present Day Miami, Florida: Our Universe

Page waited at the red light as vehicles crossed the road to her left and right. It was a busy summer day. She looked at the time shown on her car screen and was still slightly surprised to find that it was only eight in the morning and already the roads were packed with cars.

The light turned green and Page pushed the acceleration pedal. She took a quick glance at the passenger seat in the front to make sure that the cake was still there and safe. Her cousin was turning 14 that day and it was her job to get the cake. She was honestly excited. It would be the first time that summer they all got together.

Just as she began to cross the intersection, a pickup truck came zooming from her left. She barely saw it in time to swerve her car enough that she didn't die upon impact. Page felt fear and panic clutch at her chest as two more vehicles hit her car at the exact same time. Her eyes closed as she heard glass shattering and metal impacting. Then the movement of her vehicle stopped.

She let out a shaky breath as she felt a liquid go down her right leg. Then the pain began to set in. Her left side had been littered with glass from her broken window and she could feel stinging cuts across her face and her arm. Though what she really felt was her right arm. She took a glance at it and felt fear grip her heart again. Her arm was snapped and a bone was even showing despite the blood from the wound.

She felt tears go down her face as the pain overwhelmed her from head to toe. It hurt so bad. Why did it have to be her in a car crash? Outside, she could faintly hear the sounds of people getting out of their cars, likely coming to check on those involved in the car crash.

She heard someone come to her car and they gasped upon seeing her appearance, likely bloody from all the cuts. Page turned her head and saw a woman. "It hurts," Page was able to get out of her mouth as sobs began to wrack her body.

She felt a hand hold her left one and the woman's soft voice filled her ears. "Don't worry sweetie, everything will be okay. The police are coming with an ambulance for you.". Page didn't think so. She felt really tired and she knew that if she slept she probably wouldn't wake up.

"C-can you tell my cousin, Emily, that I'm sorry for not bringing the cake? She really wanted to have everyone there to eat the cake. Please, tell her that I love her," Page pleaded weakly, feeling the energy leaving her. She could see blue and red flashing lights from outside her front window, but that didn't matter.

Everything began to become numb and cold as she thought about how disappointed she was. She wouldn't become a vet and help animals in need. She wouldn't even be able to go to her cousin's birthday party. Everything began to fade into white and she closed her eyes and breathed for a final time.
