Chapter Thirteen

That night, Sera met Lydia at the sheriff's office after she had found out that Meredith was the benefactor.

"Hey, you doing okay?" Sera asks Lydia as she moves to stand next to her.

"Shouldn't I be asking you that?" Lydia asks. "I mean your mom died, Ser. And we've barely even talked about it."

"What's there to talk about? She's dead. It's my fault-" Sera shrugs and Lydia shakes her head.

"No. This... is not your fault, okay? It's Meredith's," Lydia says. "She planned this whole thing, the money, the assassins, the killing. She's doing it."

"She didn't have her powers anymore. It was my job to protect her," Sera cries as the tears begin to fill her eyes.

"Oh, Sera." Lydia brings the girl into a hug as she breaks down the arms of her best friend. This was the first time since she found out her mother died that she had cried. She'd been holding the emotions in, trying to hold everything back until they stopped this whole thing. Her mom had been her only parent. She didn't even have her father's last name. Seraphina Hayes was and is Kenna Hayes' daughter as far as she was concerned. She didn't have a father to compare her hair or eye color or even her personality. Her mom was her everything, and now she's gone.

Sheriff Stilinski walks up to the two girls as they pull away and Sera wipes her eyes.

"What did she say?" Lydia asks the man with an arm still around Sera's shoulders.

"Hard to tell. There were words- I'm not sure there were actual sentences," he says and looks over at Sera. "You okay?"

"Yeah, I just miss my mom." Sera says with a watery smile.

"I think we need a psychologist." Lydia says, bringing the attention off of her best friend.

"Or a medium." he suggests.

"Is she even competent enough to be charged with something?" Lydia asks the sheriff.

"If Meredith is the Benefactor, then that means she was competent enough to trick Kate into opening the Hale vault; competent enough to blackmail Brunski into helping her; and competent enough to create a hit-list and pay out money for its completion. This girl's practically a criminal mastermind." Sera sighs and looks around at the station.

"There's gotta be a reason why she would do this..." Lydia says.

"I'm only interested in the why if it tells me the how." Stilinski says.

"You mean how to stop it." Lydia amends.

"After what happened to Scott tonight, this thing's still going. The payments could be automatic. And, as long as the killers are getting paid- and paid very well- that list is gonna keep getting smaller." the sheriff explains.

"We don't just need to stop the Deadpool-" Lydia concludes.

"We need to stop the money." Stilinski finishes for her.

"I thought I told you two to go home." Stilinski says walking up to the two girls lightly sleeping on the bench outside of his office.

"I thought I told you I wasn't going anywhere," Lydia retorts. "Did they get anything out of her?"

"Should have gone with the medium," he says as Parrish walks up to the group.

"We went through everything in Brunski's office, and so far, everything amounts to pretty much nothing." he says. "Did you not go home yet?" he asks the two girls.

"Not until Meredith starts talking," Lydia says.

"I have no where else to be," Sera says and Parrish nods.

"Lydia, I promise she'll talk, and when she does, I'll let you know. Trust me on this- everybody talks eventually." Parrish reassures.

"Then let me try." Lydia suggests.

"No! We've already discussed this-" Stilinski denies.

"I've gotten through to her before! Just let me try," Lydia pleads.

"I wanna talk to her too," Sera says.

"Sera-"

"She's the reason my mom's gone," Sera says. "I know she was going to die eventually, but she still had some life in her and now its gone. And it's her fault." Stilinski and Parrish share a look.

It had taken some convincing but, the girls had gotten Sheriff Stilinski and Parrish to let them talk to Meredith. The three girls were sitting in Stilinski's office trying to get something out of the curly haired girl.

"I think I'm getting an idea of how all this happened..." Lydia begins. "You used Brunski, right? You knew he'd kill people... and that he would do it again. He used my grandmother's code for the Deadpool. He put it online. He took the money from the Hale vault, then turned the bearer bonds into cash. He made the payments. Was it Brunski's idea to fake your death? Did he get nervous because you helped us with one of the cipher keys?"

"I wanted to help." Meredith insists.

"All you ever wanted to do was help. Is that why you're here? I know you wouldn't be here if you didn't want to talk..." Lydia says, sitting down next to the girl and Sera leans against the desk in the center of the room with her arms crossed.

"I do- but only to one person." Meredith says.

"Who?" Lydia asks.

"Peter..." the quieter girl says. "Peter Hale."

"Her? That's the girl that stole my money?" Peter asks as the small group looks into the room they had put Meredith into.

"That "girl" is a Banshee. They're more dangerous than you think," Lydia corrects.

"Oh, I think that girl's pilot light went out a long time ago," Peter retorts. "Sheriff, not to question the unquestionably sterling reputation of your department, but are you absolutely sure you got the one?"

"How about you just go in there and see what she has to say?" Stilinski suggests.

"Okay..." Peter says hesitantly.

"Great, we're gonna let two sociopaths talk to each other," Sera mutters as Peter walks into the interigation room.

"Let's just see what happens," Parrish says. He walks into the interegation room after Peter as the girls and Stilinski watch from the window.

"Meredith, where's my money?" Peter demands. "Or, more correctly, what's left of it..." Meredith reaches up to touch his face and Peter grabs her hand before she can touch him.

"Let her go," Parrish says. "Let her go."

"Why did you do that?" Peter asks after he lets her hand go.

"They're all... gone..." she says.

"Oh, my God... They have met before," Lydia realizes.

"The burns... They're all... gone," Meredith mumbles.

Meredith, you put everyone- including my nephew and my daughter- on a death list! Don't you think you owe us the slightest explanation as to why?" Peter says.

"You said it had to be kept secret..."

"I said? I said that to you?" He asks and Sera quietly watches the two converse.

"You said it," she insists.

"Meredith... Allow me to remind you yet again- we have never met. Ever." Peter says.

"What's he doing?" Stilinski asks watching the oldest Hale closely.

"You don't remember?" Meredith asks.

"No... but maybe you do." Peter slides the table across the room and lunges at Meredith and sticking his claws into the back of his neck. Stilinski, Lydia, and Sera run into the room. Stilinski charges towards the two but Lydia and Sera run in front of the man to stop him.

"No, don't!" Lydia yells. "Don't! Don't touch them. If you break the bond, you could kill them- both of them."

"What are we supposed to do?" Stilinski asks the girls.

"I, uh... I don't know," Lydia says.

"Wait and see I guess," Sera shrugs. "There's not much we can do until he's done invading her mind."

"What the hell is he doing to her?" Parrish asks.

"He's accessing her memories, usually only alphas can do it but Peter's kind of a special case, I guess," Sera explains.

"Do you hear that? She's saying something," Stilinski says. Sera notices Meredith quietly whispering something Sera can't quite hear.

"Can you understand that?" Parrish asks Lydia.

"I can. I can hear perfectly," Lydia mumbles. "She was in the hospital- the same hospital."

"Same as who?" Parrish asks.

"Peter," Lydia whispers. "It was right after the fire. Meredith could hear him."

"Hear what?" Parrish asks.

"Everything. She was hearing every thought in his head, like they'd somehow found the same wavelength. And now, everything going through his mind was also going right into hers."

"For how long?" Stilinski asks.

"Weeks. Maybe even months. It was almost like he was standing right over her bed, talking about the fire. About getting revenge," Lydia says in a far away voice. Peter pulls his claws out of Meredith's neck and collapses to the ground. Parrish immediatly aims his gun at the werewolf. "It was your idea... And you don't even remember."

"Are you kidding me?" Peter questions.

"Hands where I can see them," Parrish says, his gun aimed at the werewolf.

"How the hell was I supposed to remember any of that?"

"Because you said it!" Sera remarks. "They were your thoughts."

"She got it from you." Lydia adds.

"I was out of my mind! Do you know what it's like for one of us to be in a coma? Paralyzed but cognizant? You try not going crazy." Peter responds.

"She was listening to you!" Parrish insists.

"She was listening to the ranting and raving of a lunatic! ...A former lunatic. I'm much healthier, now," Peter amends.

"No you're not," Sera snaps.

"I had nothing to do with this," he insists.

"If she was following your lead on this, then how do we know there isn't more?" Stilinski asks.

"Stealing my own money? Really?"

"You were going to use it anyway..." Stilinski trails off.

"Stop. Stop it! This is what she wants. It's why she's here," Lydia says, after coming to a realization.  "Look around, Sheriff- there's four people in here right now, four people still on the Deadpool. Me... Parrish... Sera... and Meredith."

"But not him," Parrish concludes

"Lydia's right. We don't want to kill each other," Peter says.

"The only person I'm pointing a gun at is you," Stilinski says, his gun still aimed at the man.

"Then you better make it a perfect shot, Sheriff, because I don't go down easy."

"If hurt him, I'll kill you," Sera threatens, immediately coming to the defense of her pseudo father and her hands begin to ignite with the flame living under her skin.

"I'm willing to bet that a bullet between the eyes doesn't heal real fast... not even for your kind," Stilinski retorts.

"Stop. Please, stop," Lydia begs the rest of the group.

"This department's getting more corrupt by the second! What are you going to charge me with, Sheriff? How are you going to explain this to a judge? "Telepathic girl overhears thoughts of comatose Werewolf and decides to enact his plans for retribution?" Hmm," Peter says. "They're gonna be pointing a gun at your head and asking you to go quietly."

"Let him go. You have to let him go," Lydia sighs.

"I'd take the word of a Banshee, Sheriff. I leave. No triggers pulled, no blood shed," Peter says. The fire in Sera's hands disappear as the oldest Hale walks past the group blocking the exit.

"That's twice, Peter... There's not gonna be a third," Stilinski says, lowering his gun. Peter leaves the room and Meredith stands up to chase after him.

"No! It's not finished!" she protests as Parrish holds her back. "No! It's not finished! No! It's not- done!
