Chapter 16. Nancy's song.
"And that's why we need your help."
Nancy looked between the King and her mentor.
"Its your magic." Ember reminded her. "Its your mind. Its your call."
Drew looked back at the King. "Alright. Ill do it. When?"
Phantom smiled. "October 31st."
------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hermione? You here?"
"Up here, Harry!"
Harry looked up to see Hermione siting in an alcove high above the ground, only to vanish behind a shelf of books and reappear on ground floor. "What is it?"
"Have you heard?"
She shook her head. "Heard what? I've been holed up in her since Ginny introduced me to Lord Ghostwriter." She had a book in one hand, her bag slung over her shoulder, dressed in comfortable muggle clothes. She sat at one of the many desks that Ghostwriter had placed in his library since the students had begun studying here. He had, like Fright Knight, only taken a liking to a single student, Hermione, although he allowed access to his shelves to any who swore they would accept their fate as a book character for the rest of eternity should they harm one of his many tomes.
Harry sat down next to her. "The Crawford's are awake."
"That's good news. Fantastic in fact."
"Phantom is pretty angry."
"Understandable."
"Rumor has it he's planning to do something. He, Avalon, and Albion left for a long time yesterday. They took Professor McGonagall with them."
"Interesting."
"You really haven't left this place in two weeks?"
She shook her head. "Lord Ghostwriter has books from every era, from Muggles, Wizards and Ghosts. I would stay here for the rest of my life if it meant learning even a fraction of what his collection as to offer."
She said said this with a dreamy look in her eyes, as if fantasizing about spending the rest of her existence in this room.
Harry sensed danger and steered her away, fingering the heavy bracelet on his wrist. "Anyways, the King wont leave for a couple of days. Ginny spoke with her mentor. Fright Knight says that the time is not right. That the King cannot act until the veil thins. Does that make any sense to you?"
Finally he had gotten to the point of the conversation. Hermione's big beautiful brain.
"What's the date?"
Harry thought back. "Here or in the Human realm?"
"The human realm."
"Uh. October 29th. I think."
Her eyes widened. "That's it. He's waiting for All Hallows Eve."
'"What's-"
But she was gone, climbing up the shelves and scurrying through secret passages that mysteriously appear and disappear to allow Hermione to reach the upper shelves.
She came back with a small leather bound book that looked as ancient as the King was.
"Ghostly Dates and their correspondence with Human holidays and there effect on the Infinite realms." She read, opening it up.
"Look here." She said after a moment, reading from the book.
All Hallow's eve. Known to modern humans as Halloween. This date is relevant to all ghosts as it is the day that the veil was formed thus we celebrate the creation of our safe haven and its ruler who maintains and balances the Veil. But for two Spirits this is much more. General Fright Knight, of the first army, was originally a spirit of fear. His yearly parade through the human world lead to him eventually being recognized as the Spirit of Halloween, which is why humans leave Candy near their homes, in hopes of satisfying his infamous sweet tooth and carve pumpkins, for his power can only be sealed if his sword is placed within a jack-o-lantern, a pumpkin with a carved face.
The second ghost this date is relevant to is the Great King Phantom, whose guardianship of the Veil and immense power combined leaves him unable to travel to the human realm until this day. He usually spends his one free day wandering around, occasionally playing tricks on humans and galloping through the skies with Fright Knight. He must return by Midnight On All Hallows though, lest he be trapped in the human world for a year.
Hermione looked up from the book. "All Hallow's eve is in a few days. He's going to go himself."
"I'll tell Ron." Harry stood up to excuse himself. "You know. You really should explore the Keep more. Who knows how long we have her."
"Harry. That's why I'm here. Who knows how long we have here? I may not get another chance to read books from here."
Harry sighed, but let Hermione be Hermione. He then went on to find Ron.
"I knew there was a reason I liked you."
Hermione turned to see a grey skinned ghost with a goatee and glasses. "Lord Ghostwriter." She said giving a bow.
She and Ghostwriter had been speaking often, whether it be to discuss books or current even or even to explain the science behind ghost powers and magic. He had even introduced her to the works of Stephen Hawking, an amazing Muggle scientist. They were currently working on magical theory and how it corresponded with Einstein's theory of Realativity.
"I've been meaning to talk to you about something, seeing as your the only human I've seen with a passion that rivals my own. I've already asked for permission and, if you be willing, and it wouldn't be permanent until after you turn 18 of course. I would like you to stay here and continue your research into our thesis."
Hermione gasped. "Really?"
He nodded. "Its perfectly fine if you wish to return to the human realm. I perfectly understand if-"
He was cut off by Hermione hugging him. "I would be honored." She said.
Ghostwriter smiled. "Lets go talk to your parents then. I've already gotten permission to create a gate near your human home and will invite your parents here so they can see you will be safe. King Phantom approves. He seemed happy for some reason."
"He's probably glad you found someone you could talk to."
"I trapped him in a poem once you know."
"Really? Why would you do that? He's the King!"
"It was Christmas. I was upset. Sue me!"
Hermione only laughed.
Alright guys. Same deal as last time. Comment or the next chapter gets it.
