Chapter 11. Changes
It had been a two weeks since the Phantom Song, as the day was being called.
The Ministry had tried to break through but to no avail and eventually things settled down and classes resumed.
Only it was much livelier.
Music filled the halls and students were loath to part with their ghostly possessions, still draped in their clothes from the other world.
Headmaster Umbridge, who had been enstated after Dumbledore left was at her wits end. No matter what she tried, the troublesome Missing, as all who went through the portal were being referred as, refused obey her rules.
It didn't help that the majority of the Missing continued to, on occasion, go missing.
Umbridge swore they were still being controlled by the Dark creatures. Why else would they continuously escape and return to that dastardly plane.
The other teachers, however, greatly enjoyed the leaps and bounds the majority of the Missing had accomplished in their time away, and, although they were forbidden from speaking about the Phantom Song, they still had discussion with students one on one so they could get a better grasp on what they had learned.
And the stories they told. Fred and George still laughed about their exploits with Youngblood. Ember's iconic song was nearly always being played somewhere in the castle, sword fights and horse races broke out on occasion, but all in good fun, the horses vanishing into the ether after they had been unsaddled.
Umbridge was particularly displeased with the fact that the swordsmen could dodge her spells like it was nothing, having dealt with the four armed Pandora in dodgeball. Compared to her, Dolores was nothing.
And the ghosts.
Well.
The ghosts were loving it.
Everyone of the Missing still had residue ghost energy on them.
Which meant they could touch the spectres of Hogwarts.
Everyone of the ghosts were continuously shaking hands with random Missing, high fiving people as they passed through the halls, or giving out free hugs.
Umbridge hated it, declaring that no one was to interact with the dead anymore.
Of course, that only encouraged the Missing and Ghosts more.
And the teachers, although they had to assign detention if they caught students in the act, but it was just sweeping the classroom or something frivolous like that.
Trelawney refused to believe the Missing when they spoke of Clockwork, the ghostly Master of Time, which made Clockwork smirk, not that anyone knew that though.
Flitwick was astounded at a new charm Merlin had taught a seventh year and was changing up his curiculum under Dolores's nose.
Mcgonagall liked the idea of more personalized teaching, and was petitioning for more teachers to be brought in.
Many suspected she would be the first adult to pass through the gate but it had yet to happen. Students were taking their Guardianship status very seriously. There was going to be a vote later that month on the matter.
Sprout was dying to meet Undergrowth, the ghosts of plants and forestry, speaking at length with some of Undergrowth's students, who had cared for his garden during their stay. All with a silencing charm on the room of course.
Snape was still Snape, punishing any who spoke of the Infinite Realms harshly but being more lenient when a Hogwarts ghost sat in on his classes, knowing he was more than likely to hurt the students without a Phantom eye, taking shifts until they were an omnipresent shadow in the back of his class.
Peeves was having a blast, every single one of the Missing helping him prank Umbridge.
And the Weasleys were getting a continuous supply of prank equipment from an invisible source, although no adult seemed to ever see them.
Umbridge eventually noticed that every one of the Missing had some sort of jewelry piece on them and banned them, despite not knowing their purpose.
But when she or anyone else tried to remove them it refused to budge, twisting and turning it and pulling until the Missing would cry out and activate the latent charm.
Temporary Intangibility.
The Missing would slip away, usually hiding for a while before returning to classes.
This of course, infuriated her even more, but let's be honest here. That was the whole point.
That brings us up to the present, where a certain infamous trio were sneaking through the courtyard.
"Ron are you sure about this. We're not supposed to be here. We could be expelled."
"Don't worry, Hermione. Fred, George and Ginny are waiting just on the other side for us."
Harry was also a bit apprehensive but if Ron was sure, so was he.
They adjusted the Invisibility cloak, they really were getting a bit too big for all three of them to fit but not quite yet.
Ron stepped out and raised his hand, his ring glowing for a second before he nodded and grabbed Harry and Hermione's hands.
Like a fidelius charm had been lifted, a large oak door appeared between the willow trees.
"Until you get a key you cant see the gate unless your holding onto someone who has one." Ron explained.
The door opened, revealing the green swirling abyss that had appeared the night of Phantom Song.
Fred, George and Ginny stepped out, all still in their strange clothes.
Fred and George grabbed Harry and Ginny and Ron took Hermione.
"Its part of the security." Fred explained.
"It takes two key holders to bring in one non Key holder." George finished.
"I don't know about this." Hermione said.
Ginny and Ron jumped through, pulling her behind.
Fred and George pulled Harry along, who pulled back at the last second but Fred and George had a firm hold on him.
The vanished in a puff of green mist.
Harry and Hermione gasped at the sight of Phantoms keep and the Infinite Realms.
"Amazing." Hermione said, awe struck.
"Wait until you meet Ghostwriter." Ginny said, mounting a horse that had been waiting for them. There were three waiting for them, a ghost holding the reins of three more.
"Here, Hermione.." Ginny said. "They only listen to Key holders so you and Harry need a partner. Also, until you get a key, you have to hold on to one of us. If you let go you'll be yanked back to Hogwarts."
Fred and George had already mounted up and were dancing in the air, Harry holding on tightly to George's shirt.
Ron got on and pulled Hermione up, before clicking his tongue.
The horses launched into the zone and took off towards the Keep.
Harry and Hermione clenched tightly to their respective Weasley, absolutely terrified.
They flew towards the keep, which took about three minutes.
"What are the doors?" Hermione asked.
"Each one leads to either a Ghosts lair, a different part of the zone or even the human world. Problem is, there's no telling what it will be until you actually open it." Ginny explained.
They landed near the stables in the keep and Fred and Ginny took the horses to their stalls, George and Ron still holding on to Harry and Hermione.
"Lady Ginny." A voice boomed.
They turned to see a huge knight in black armor with flaming purple hair approach.
Hermione tried to scamper back but Ron held her tight, gripping her wrist so she wouldn't be transported back.
Ginny looked back and grinned, giving a small bow. "General Fright Knight." She said.
"It is good to see you again." The Knight boomed in his deep voice. "Who are your friends. I recognize your brothers but not the dark haired boy and blond girl."
"This is Harry Potter and Hermione Granger. Harry, Hermione. General Fright Knight, leader of the first Army."
"It is an honor to meet you." He turned back to Ginny. "Come. Let us test your skills."
"If I may ask, Harry and Hermione are not as of yet Key holders and I wished to be there when they choose. Perhaps in an hour, if that is acceptable."
"An hour then. See you on the field."
The huge ghost left and Ginny smiled. "Gotta love those old mannerisms."
Before Harry or Hermione could react to the strange encounter they were pulled away by the Weasley's towards the inner castle.
Inside was the silver and black the Weasleys had grown to love but Hermione was a bit taken aback by the multiple ghosts floating about the keep, doing the days chores.
They turned into a large room where four tables stood, each with the house colors on them.
George and Ron hauled their friend over to the Gryffindor table . "Pick."
They each chose one and put it on.
The band glowed and shrank or grew to fit.
"Okay. Now we let go. If it likes you, you won't vanish."
"Wont what?"
But it was too late, as the Weasleys both let go.
Both Gryffindors glowed gold and after a moment the glow faded, both still standing there.with an awestruck look on their faces.
The Weasleys grinned. "Congrats. Your key holders now."
Out of nowhere Fred was tackled, by an invisible foe.
"Youngblood!" George yelled, launching himself forward and colliding with something midair..
"Whats going on?" Harry asked.
"Youngblood." Ginny said. "He can only be seen by children and the immature."
"So-"
"Only the Missing who were enchanted can see him."
"Oh." Hermione said as she settled on a bracelet. "That's fascinating. Do you think you could relay his words so I can talk to him."
Fred and George looked at the same spot in horror simultaneously. "Not it." Both said but fred was faster.
George shuddered and his brown eyes turned green. "Hi miss. Nice ta meet ya. Name's Youngblood." Instead of George's usual voice, Hermione and Harry could hear the voice of a young child.
"Its a pleasure." Hermione said. "Tell me. What did you do to George?"
"He overshadowed him."
Everyone jumped at the new voice, echoing with power.
All of the Weasleys, including George/Youngblood bowed to the man in the entrance. "Greetings, Your majesty." They chorused as Ginny and Ron yanked Harry and Hermione into a bow.
"No need for that. I was just coming to see what the commotion was."
His hair was pure white, his eyes a toxic green. But he wore casual clothes, like what you would find on the streets of london a century ago.
"Hi. We haven't met yet. My name is Daniel James Phantom." He Said to Hermione.
"Hermione Granger sir."
"A pleasure." He turned to face Harry. "You I remember. The Shard Child."
It was strange being called a child by someone who looked like he was your age but Harry nodded.
"How do you feel? The shard was with you for a long time. It can't be easy getting used it its absence."
"I feel like a weight has been lifted off me, sir." He replied honestly.
"Good. Well. I must be off now. Your Ministry is getting rather anxious
Youngblood. Five minutes. Your still learning to overshadow. Do be careful."
"Yes sir."
"Oh. Two things. One. Lady Ginny. General Frigjt Knight is waiting in the courtyard for you. Two. I was hoping you could help arrange a.meeting with one of your teachers. The Cat witch."
"Professor Mcgonagal?" Hermione asked.
"Yes. I've heard many things about her and know she wants to arrange more personalized educations for Hogwarts students. I may be able to provide those teachers she needs."
Hermione bowed again. "Well let her know. Any particular day in mind?"
"Bring her, if she agrees, to the portal at midnight. I'll have a coach sent."
And with that he was gone.
"He's so young. He looked older in the mirror." Hermione said.
"He can change his appearance. What you just saw was his preferred form. But we've seen him masquerading as a first year to play a game and as an old man to scold Fred and George."
"Wait. That was Phantom!?" George asked. "No wonder he caught us. He helped set it up!"
Everyone laughed.
"So, Youngblood. Can you tell me why only children can see you? It's not a ghost thing as Phantom just proved."
"Adults are boring. Kids will play. So I don't bother with adults who won't." Youngblood said. "I gotta go now. Bye."
George's eyes turned back to brown as Ginny and Fred tracked something with their eyes before waving goodbye.
"I hate it when he does that." George said.
