6. Notes/Prima Donna
Backstage in the Paris Opera House, Buquet appears with a length of fabric serving as a cloak, and a piece of rope. He shows them to the ballet girls, who watch in fascination.
(Buquet)
Like yellow parchment
Is his skin...
A great black hole served as the
Nose that never grew...
Demonstrating his method of self-defense against the punjab lasso, he inserts his hand between his neck and the noose, then pulls the rope taut.
With a mixture of horror and delight, the ballet girls applaud this demonstration.
You must be always
On your guard,
Or he will catch you with his
Magical lasso!
Suddenly, a trap opens up, which casts a shadow of the Phantom as he emerges. The ballet girls link hands and run off terrified. The Phantom leads Tyler secretly through the stage. As he does, he stares upon Buquet.
Thrusting his cape around Tyler, he takes him out, but as he leaves, Madame Jenna enters the room and observes.
She turns on Buquet.
(Madame Jenna)
Those who speak
Of what they know
Find, too late, that prudent
Silence is wise
Joseph Buquet, hold your tongue!
Or he will burn you with the heat of his eyes!
~
(Start song)
In the managers' office, Iero is scornfully flipping through the papers.
"Mystery, after gala night."
It says, "Mystery of sopranos flight!"
"Mystified," baffled Sûreté say
"We are mystified. We suspect foul play!"
He lowers his paper.
Bad news on soprano scene
First Amy Lee, and now Tyler!
Still, at least the seats get sold
Gossip's worth its weight in gold
What a way to run a business
Spare me these unending traíais
Half your cast disappears
But your crowd still cheers
Opera!
To hell with Gluck and Handel
It's a scandal that'll pack em in the aisles!
Eshleman bursts in, tempered.
Damnable!
Will they all walk out?
This is damnable!
(Iero)
Eshleman, please don't shout
It's publicity!
And the take is vast!
Free publicity!
(Eshleman)
But we have no cast!
(Iero)
But Eshleman, have you seen the queue?
Oh, it seems you've got one too
He picks up two letters sent by the Phantom. He hands one to Eshleman, and he reads it.
(Eshleman)
Dear Eshleman, what a charming gala!
Tyler enjoyed a great success!
We were hardly bereft when Amy left
Otherwise
The chorus was entrancing, but the dancing was a lamentable mess!
(Iero)
Dear Iero, just a brief reminder
My salary has not been paid
Send it care of the ghost by return of post
PTO
No one likes a debtor, so it's better if my orders are obeyed!
(Both)
Who would have the gall to send this?
Someone with a puerile brain
(Iero)
These are both sighed "O.G"
(Eshleman)
Who the hell is he?
(Both)
Opera ghost!
(Iero)
It's really not amusing!
(Eshleman)
He's abusing our position!
(Iero)
In addition, he wants money!
(Eshleman)
He's a funny sort of spectre
(Both)
To expect a large retainer!
Nothing plainer, he is clearly quite insane!
The managers are interrupted by the arrival of Gerard Arthur Way, who brandished another of the Phantom's notes.
(Gerard)
Where is he?
(Eshleman)
You mean La Amy?
(Gerard)
I mean Mr. Joseph, where is he?
(Iero)
Well, how should we know?
(Gerard)
I want an answer
I take it that you sent me this note?
(Iero)
What's all this nonsense?
(Eshleman)
Of course not!
(Iero)
Don't look at us!
(Gerard)
He's not with you, then?
(Iero)
Of course not!
(Eshleman)
We're in the dark
(Gerard)
Monsieur, don't argue
Isn't this the letter you wrote?
(Iero)
And what is it that we're meant to have wrote?
Or written?
Gerard hands the note to Eshleman, who reads it.
(Eshleman)
"Do not fear for Mr. Joseph
The Angel of Music has him under his wing
Make no attempt to see him again."
Iero and Eshleman look mystified. Gerard looks at them for answers.
"If you didn't write it, who did?"
Suddenly, Amy Lee bursts in. She also has a letter, which had cheered her no more than the others.
(Amy)
Where is he!
(Eshleman)
Ah, welcome back!
(Amy)
Your precious patron, where is he!
(Gerard)
What is it now?
(Amy)
I have your letter
A letter which I rather resent!
(Iero)
And did you send it?
(Gerard)
Of course not!
(Eshleman)
As if he would!
(Amy)
You didn't send it?
(Gerard)
Of course not!
(Iero)
What's going on?
(Amy)
You dare to tell me
That this is not the letter you sent?!
(Gerard)
And what is it that I'm meant to have sent?
Gerard takes the letter and reads it.
"Your days at the Opera Populaire are numbered. Tyler Joseph will be singing on your behalf tonight. Be prepared for a great misfortune, should you attempt to take his place."
Iero and Eshleman grow frustrated.
(Both)
Far too many notes for my taste
And most of them about Tyler
All we've heard since we've came was Mr. Joseph's name!
Suddenly, Madame Jenna appears, accompanied by Hayley.
(Madame Jenna)
Mr. Joseph has returned
(Iero)
I trust his midnight oil is well and truly burned
(Eshleman)
Where precisely is he now?
(Madame Jenna)
I thought it best that he went home
(Hayley)
He needed rest
(Gerard)
May I see him?
(Madame Jenna)
No, monsieur
He will see no one
(Amy)
Will he sing?
Will he sing?
(Madame Jenna)
Here, I have a note
(Gerard, Amy, and Eshleman)
Let me see it!
Iero snatches the letter from them.
"Please!"
He opens the note and begins to read it.
"Gentlemen, I have now sent you several notes of the most amiable nature, detailing how my theatre is to be run. You have not followed my instructions."
The Phantom's voice begins to take over.
"I shall give you one last chance..."
(The Phantom)
Tyler Joseph has returned to you
And I am anxious his career should progress
In the new production of "II Muto", you will therefore cast Amy Lee as the Pageboy
And put Mr. Joseph in the role of Countess
The role which Mr. Joseph plays calls for charm and appeal
The role of the Pageboy is silent, which makes my casting in a word, ideal
"I shall watch the performance from my normal seat in Box Five, which will be kept empty for me. Should these commands be ignored, a disaster beyond your imagination will occur."
Iero's voice takes back over.
"I remain, Gentlemen, your obedient servant, O.G."
(Hayley)
Tyler
Tyler
Amy explodes.
(Amy)
Tyler!
(Eshleman)
Whatever next!
(Amy)
It's all a ploy to help Tyler!
(Iero)
This is insane!
(Amy)
I know who sent this!
The Vicomte! His lover!
(Gerard)
Indeed!
Can you believe this!
(Eshleman)
Signora!
(Amy)
O traditori!
(Iero)
This is a joke!
(Eshleman)
This changes nothing!
(Amy)
O mentitori!
(Iero)
Signora!
(Eshleman)
You are our star!
(Iero)
And always will be!
(Eshleman)
Signora!
(Iero)
The man is mad!
(Eshleman)
We don't take orders!
(Iero)
Mr. Joseph will be playing the Pageboy
The silent role
(Both)
Amy Lee will be playing the lead!
(Amy)
It's useless trying to appease me!
You're only saying this to please me!
Signori, e vero?
Non, non, non viglio udire!
Lasciatemi morire!
O padre mio!
Dio!
(Madame Jenna)
Who scorn his word
Beware of those
(Amy)
You have reviled me!
(Madame Jenna)
The Angel sees
The Angel knows
(Gerard)
Why did Tyler fly from my arms?
(Amy)
You have rebuked me!
(Iero and Eshleman)
Signora, pardon us!
(Amy)
You have replaced me!
(Iero and Eshleman)
Please, Signora!
We beseech you!
(Madame Jenna)
This hour shall see your darkest fears
(Hayley and Gerard)
I must see him
(Amy)
Abbandonata!
Deseredata!
O, sventurata!
(Madame Jenna)
The Angel knows
The Angel hears
(Gerard)
Where did he go?
(Amy)
Abbandonata!
Disgraziata!
(Iero and Eshleman)
Signora, sing for us!
Don't be a martyr!
(Gerard, Madame Jenna, and Hayley)
What new surprises line in store?
(Iero and Eshleman)
Our star!
(Amy)
Non vo' cantar!
~
Everyone looks at Amy, as the managers approach her lovingly.
(Eshleman)
Your public needs you!
(Iero)
We need you too!
(Amy)
Would you not rather have your precious little ingenue?
(Iero and Eshleman)
Signora, no!
The world wants you!
The managers adopt their most persuasive attitudes.
Prima Donna, first lady of the stage!
Your devotees are on their knees to implore you!
(Eshleman)
Can you bow out when they're shouting your name?
(Iero)
Think of how they all adore you!
(Both)
Prima Donna, enchant us once again!
(Eshleman)
Think of your muse
(Iero)
And of the queues round the theatre!
(Both)
Can you deny us the triumph in store?
Sing, Prima Donna, once more!
Amy registers her acceptance as the Managers continue to cajole and the others reflect various on situation.
(Gerard)
Tyler spoke of an Angel...
(Amy)
Prima Donna, your song shall live again!
(Iero and Eshleman)
Think of your public!
(Amy)
You took a snub
But there's a public who needs you!
(Madame Jenna)
He has heard the voice of the Angel of music
(Iero and Eshleman)
Those who hear your voice liken you to an angel!
(Amy)
Think of their cry of undying support!
(Gerard)
Is this his Angel of Music?
(Eshleman)
We get our opera!
(Iero)
She gets her limelight!
(Amy)
Follow where the limelight leads you!
(Hayley)
Is this ghost an angel or a madman?
(Gerard)
Angel or madman?
(Iero and Eshleman)
Leading ladies are a trial!
(Madame Jenna)
Heaven help you, those who doubt...
(Amy)
You'll sing again, and to unending ovation!
(Gerard)
Orders! Warnings!
Lunatic demands!
(Madame Jenna)
This miscasting will invite damnation...
(Iero and Eshleman)
Tears... oaths, lunatic demands are regular occurrences!
(Hayley)
Bliss or damnation?
Which has claimed him?
(Amy)
Think how you'll shine in that final encore!
Sing, Prima Donna, once more!
(Madame Jenna)
Oh fools, to have flouted his warnings!
(Gerard)
Surely, for his sake...
(Hayley)
Surely he'll strike back
(Iero and Eshleman)
Surely there'll be further scenes worse than this!
(Madame Jenna)
Think, before these demands are rejected!
(Gerard)
I must see these demands are rejected!
(Hayley)
If his threats and demands are rejected!
(Iero and Eshleman)
Who'd believe a diva happy to relieve a chorus boy, who's gone and slept with the patron?
Gerard and the soubrette, entwined in love's duet!
Although he may demur, he must of been with him!
(Hayley and Gerard)
Tyler must be protected!
(Amy)
O, fortunata!
Non ancor abbandonata!
(Iero and Eshleman)
You'd never get away with all this in a play, but if it's loudly sung and in a foreign tongue it's just the sort of story audiences adore, in fact a perfect opera!
(Gerard)
His game is over!
(Madame Jenna)
This is a game you cannot hope to win!
(Gerard)
And in Box Five, a new game will begin...
(Madame Jenna)
For, if his curse is on this opera...
(Hayley)
But if his curse is on this opera...
(Iero and Eshleman)
Prima Donna, the world is at your feet!
A nation waits, and how it hates to be cheated!
(Amy)
The stress that falls upon a famous Prima Donna!
Terrible diseases, coughs and colds and sneezes!
Still, the driest throat will reach the highest note, in search of perfect opera!
(Hayley and Madame Jenna)
Then I fear the outcome...
(Gerard)
Tyler plays the Pageboy, Amy Lee plays the Countess
(Madame Jenna)
Should you dare to...
(Hayley)
When you once again...
(All)
Light up the stage with that age old rapport!
Sing, Prima Donna
Once more!
Hearing of the rejection, the Phantom is enraged.
"So, it is to be war between us! If these demands are not met, a disaster beyond your imagination will occur!"
(All)
Once more!
