12. The Point of No Return

Tonight is the premiere of "Don Juan Triumphant". The orchestra is tuning, and Gerard and the managers have a plan to catch the Phantom and end his reign of terror.

Backstage, the chief of police prepares his men.

"You understand your instructions?"

"Yes, sir!"

"When you hear the whistle, take up your positions. I shall then instruct you to secure the doors. It is essential that all doors are properly secured."

"Are we doing the right thing, Eshleman?" Iero asked.

"Have you got a better idea?"

"Monsieur Way, am I to give the order?"

"Give the order." Gerard replied.

The chief blows his whistle, and his men fan out, leaving Gerard, the chief, and the managers alone backstage.

Gerard turns to the marksman.

"You in the pit, do you have a clear view of this box?"

"Yes, sir!"

"Remember, when the time comes, shoot. Only when you have to, but shoot to kill."

"How will I know, sir?"

"You'll know."

"Monsieur Way, are you confident that this will work?" Iero asked. "Will Mr. Joseph sing?"

"Don't worry, Iero, he will."

He turns to Eshleman.

"You ready?"

"We're in your hands, monsieur."

The chief goes to Gerard and the managers.

"My men are now in position, sir."

"Go ahead, then."

Sounding his whistle again, the chief shouts into the theatre.

"Are the doors secure?"

All the exit doors are shut, with the men telling him that they are secure.

As the orchestra falls silent, the voice of the Phantom appears out of nowhere.

(The Phantom)
I'm here
The Phantom of the Opera

The men look around apprehensively. They start to run in the direction of the voice.

(The Phantom)
I'm here
The Phantom of the Opera

Again, they follow the voice.

When it is heard in Box Five, the marksman fires a shot, which rounds Gerard into frustration.

"Idiot! You'll kill someone! I said, only when the time comes!"

"But, monsieur-"

Suddenly, the Phantom's voice cuts in; filling the building.

Everyone looks up.

(The Phantom)
No "buts"!
For once, Monsieur Way is right

Seal my fate tonight
I hate to have to cut the fun short
But the joke's wearing thin
Let the audience in

Let my opera begin!

~

After a long challenging performance, the Opera finally reaches the final scene of "Don Juan Triumphant".

There is a huge hall with an arch. Behind the arch, there is a fine table, laid for two people. Passarino, Don Juan's servant, is directing the staff as they get the room ready.

They are a crowd of sixteenth century ruffians and hoydens, proud of their master's reputation as a libertine.

(Chorus)
Here the sire may serve the dam!
Here the master takes his meat!
Here the sacrificial lamb utters one despairing bleat!

(Amy and the Chorus)
Poor young maiden!
For the thrill on your tongue of stolen sweets!
You have to pay the bill!
Tangled in the winding sheets!

Serve the meal and serve the maid!
Serve the master so that when tables, plans and maids are laid!
Don Juan triumphs once again!

Moody, who plays Don Juan, emerges from behind the arch. Hayley, who plays as a gypsy dancer, pirouettes coquettishly for him. He throws her a purse. She catches it and leaves.

(Don Juan)
Passarino, faithful friend, once again recite the plan

(Passarino)
Your young guest believe I'm you
I, the master, you, the man

(Don Juan)
When you met you wore my cloak, with my scarf you hid your face
He believes he dines with me, in his master's borrowed place!

Furtively, we'll scoff and quaff, stealing what, in truth, is mine
When it's time and modesty starts to mellow, with the wine

(Passarino)
You come home!
I use your voice
Slam the door like crack of doom!

(Don Juan)
I shall say, come, hide with me!
Where, oh, where?
Of course!
My room!

(Passarino)
Poor thing hasn't got a chance!

(Don Juan)
Here's my hat, my cloak and sword
Conquest is assured, if I do not forget myself and laugh

He puts on Passarino's cloak and goes into the curtained alcove where the bed waits.

Meanwhile, Aminta, played by Tyler, sings happily as he appears on stage.

(Tyler)
No thoughts within his head, but thoughts of joy!
No dreams within his heart but dreams of love!

"Master?" Passarino calls.

(Don Juan)
Passarino, go away!
For the trap is set and waits for its prey

Passarino obeys and leaves.

Tyler enters once again and takes off his cloak. As he sits down, the Phantom, disguised as Don Juan pretending to be Passarino, emerges from behind the curtain. He is wearing his robe, covering his face.

When Tyler sees him, his first words startle him.

(The Phantom)
You have come here
In pursuit of your deepest urge
In pursuit of that wish, which till now has been silent

Silent

I have brought you
That our passions may fuse and merge
In your mind, you've already succumbed to me
Dropped all defenses, completely succumbed to me

Now you are here with me
No second thoughts
You've decided

Decided

(Start song)

Past the point of no return
No backward glances
The games of make believe are at an end

Past the thought of it or when
No use resisting
Abandon thought and let the dream descend

What raging fire shall flood the soul?
What rich desire unlocks its door?
What sweet seduction lies before us?

Past the point of no return
The final threshold
What warm unspoken secrets will we learn?

Beyond the point of no return

(Tyler)
You have brought me
To that moment where words run dry
To that moment where speech disappears into silence

Silence

I have come here
Hardly knowing the reason why
In my mind, I've already imagined our bodies entwining
Defenseless and silent

And now I have here with you
No second thoughts
I've decided

Decided

Past the point of no return
No going back now
Our passion play has now, at last, begun

Past all thought of right or wrong
One final question
How long should we to wait before we're one?

When will the blood begin to race the sleeping bud burst into bloom?
When will the flames at last consume us?

(Both)
Past the point of no return
One final threshold
The bridges crossed
So stand and watch it burn

We've passed the point of no return

Tyler removes his hood, revealing the Phantom. He knows that he has taken Moody's place.

As final confirmation, the Phantom begins to sing.

(The Phantom)
Say you'll share with me one love
One lifetime
Lead me, save me from my solitude

He holds out a ring to Tyler.

Say you want me with you, here beside you
Anywhere you go!
Let me go too!

He puts the ring on Tyler's finger, taking his hands.

Tyler, that's all I ask of-"

Instantly, Tyler removes the Phantom's mask; revealing his beautiful but deformed face. As the police close in on him, the Phantom takes Tyler in his arms and vanishes.

Hayley runs on stage. As she pulls the curtain, she finds Ben Moody's body, garroted and propped against the bed with a noose around his neck.

Horrified, Hayley screams, causing everyone to rush on stage.

"What is it?!" Amy Lee asked. "What has happened?!"

She discovers her husband and lover is dead.

"Ben, no!"

She rushes over to Moody's body and cries over him.

"Ben, my love!"

"Oh my God!" Eshleman cried. "My God!"

"We're ruined, Eshleman!" Iero shouted. "Ruined!"

As Amy grieves over Moody's death, Gerard fears for Tyler's life and rushes over to Madame Jenna and Hayley. When Madame Jenna sees Gerard, she takes him by the hand.

"Gerard, come with me! I know where they are!"

"Can I trust you?!" Gerard cried.

"You must! But remember, keep your hand at the level of your eyes!"

"But, why?!"

"The punjab lasso, monsieur! First Buquet, now Moody!"

Hayley holds Gerard's hand.

"Like this, monsieur! I'll go with you!"

"No, Hayley, no! You stay here!"

Madame Jenna turns back to Gerard.

"Come with me, monsieur! But, hurry, or we shall be too late!"
