Just Instincts

Alyssa and I looked everywhere. Our senses were naturally better than the average human. We were genetically modified for crying out loud. We weren't normal. I tried catching a scent while Alyssa tried to scope out where the noise was coming from. "I caught a scent," I whispered pointing to a thick bush.

"Well, at least it's an animal, right?"

"Yeah, it smells weird, not like anything that would normally be around here though." I wrinkled my nose. It naturally frustrated me because I couldn't figure out what it was.

Alyssa was frozen in place. I think she was trying to listen to see if it made a noise. Noises signify all kinds of things, what mood something is in, what it could be and if it's in pain. All sorts of things. Just like if a dog growls it's angry or threatened, or if a chinchilla barks it's stressed.

Alyssa pointed to the bush, "look, a tail. I don't know what kind of animal that is though."

"It couldn't be a fox..." My voice muffled, "do you think it can hear us?"

"I don't know, Rose, you don't suppose-" Alyssa cut herself off. She knew there couldn't be more of us. We were rare. We were lucky we even met each other.

It had naturally irked me. There wouldn't be more of us. Definitely not a fox. Foxes were sly, betrayers. They were the opposite of loyal.

I had bit my tongue, but I transformed. I hated going into my true form. Nothing good came of it. My instincts were raging. More than they ever had. I guess that's what I got for not transforming for a while.

I stealthily walked over. I shoved my nose into the bush. The fox smelled gross. It had turned to face me. Its eyes were reddish and its mouth was dripping with saliva. It was diseased. No wonder why it had traveled so far. I would put it out of its misery. I grabbed it by its tail.

Groooowg, it swiped its paw, it's nails slashing my nose, three lines were engraved into my nose. I yelped in surprise.

"Rose!" Alyssa cried out, she transformed and ran over. I wasn't going to let her get hurt.
I forced myself further into the bush. The fox went to bite me but luckily I was able to knock the diseased creature's head away with my paw. I held it's head down and sank my teeth into its small body. I crushed it as much as I could, I could feel its blood gushing out of the wounds I had caused.

"Someone call an ambulance! She bit a child!"

I bit down harder feeling every bone being crushed by my jaws. I could feel it's organs in between my teeth. I spat out the creature and looked down at it. It was inevitable. The instincts of a wolf. I could never be a normal little girl. I would always be a wolf on the inside. I would never live the life where the moon meant nothing to me. I would never live the vegetarian life. I would die of malnourishment.

"Your child will never be welcomed here!"

I smiled to myself. Forgetting about Alyssa. She would always have the life of a cat. A calm life of being welcomed with warming arms. Everyone loved a cat. Even if it did bite. Even if it did act hostile at times. You can always train a cat, but a wolf stays wild forever.

Awooooooooo, the noise of the demons I challenge. The noise that I was forbidden to make anywhere else than here, this was my home. Yet I was forced to live in captivity, did other animals feel like this? No, I'm being ridiculous.

Merooooow, I glanced over at Alyssa. Did she have the same demons I had? They had to be a little different. She was naturally able to live in captivity. It frustrated me. How she had an easy life.

I felt my lips start to quiver and my teeth started to clatter. My body began to shake with rage. Alyssa's eyes narrowed and the fur on her back stood up. Instincts in the both of us were ready to be exposed again.

I lunged forward. Lifting Alyssa up by the neck. She tried clawing me but it wasn't enough. The blood vessels in her neck snapped. My pupils enlarged and I dropped her. Her pupils had dilated. Oh, I was in so much trouble.
