Chapter 6: I'm Jordan Hayes.
A week passed by since Rosalind's funeral. It was still difficult to adjust to this sudden change, but we were all trying.
Today I was meeting up with Brianna and Lenny. We all decided to spend some time together and help each other move on.
I gave myself a final touch up before closing the door behind me and leaving the house. I stepped outside and took a breath of fresh air. Brianna's car was already waiting for me, so I silently slipped inside the passenger seat.
Things were normal than before. Nobody had forgotten the tragic yet, but we were all settling down. I missed the town life. Everything was so low-key. You didn't have to constantly worry about updating your status or always looking like a Victoria secret's model.
During high school we always used to go to this small cafe called Picasso. It had amazing burgers and sandwiches. That's where we were meeting today. When the car stopped, I looked outside and grinned as I saw the friendly surrounding. We had a blast when we were in high school. All of us were satisfied with our lives. Moving to the city and seeing other people's lifestyle took all the satisfaction away.
Lenny was already waiting for me and Brianna near the entrance. His hands were in his pockets and his eyes were observing the others. Brianna and I both flashed a smile at him as we made our way to the cafe.
"Carl has already saved us a booth." He said and we followed him inside.
The booth we got was the second one to the left of the door. Brianna and I sat together while Lenny sat in front of us.
I folded my hands together and looked at him. He was struggling to hide his feelings and was failing miserably at it.
"Do you want to order first?" Brianna asked him.
"I am kinda hungry, so let's do that." Lenny replied and called Carl.
Carl was a man in his late 30's. He always served us during high school and was extremely nice. He walked over with a small smile on his face and got his notepad out.
"Oh, you two have grown so much." He told me and Brianna in awe.
"Time tends to do that to you." I said politely.
"You still look as young as ever, Carl." Brianna said and Carl just laughed.
"I guess time doesn't work very well here." He joked and I nodded my head at him.
"I'll have a cheeseburger with pickle and fries on the side." Lenny ordered.
"I'll have a vegetable club sandwich with some lemonade." I joined in.
"I think I'll have the garden salad with some water." Brianna ended.
Carl walked away and I looked at her with one eyebrow arched up. "A garden salad and water? Really?"
"Just because I'm here doesn't give me an excuse to get fat!" She defended herself and Lenny rolled his eyes making me chuckle.
"Whatever." I said.
"And since when the hell did you become a vegetarian?" Brianna asked me back in the same tone.
"Since I didn't want innocent animals to be slaughtered just to fill my tummy." I answered.
We both looked at Lenny and he defensively threw his hand up in the air and said, "I like what I ordered!"
The three of us burst into laughter, ignoring the pain that was still present inside. This is exactly what all of us needed. A little bit of happiness to keep us going.
After some time, Carl came up with our orders and placed it in front of us. I took in the delicious smell, letting the old memories hit me. I took a huge bite of my sandwich and closed my eyes to savour the unforgettable taste of the perfectly mixed sauces and finely chopped vegetables.
Brianna smacked me for chewing loudly and I returned the smack.
"What did you hit me for?!" She squealed.
"For talking while having your food." I blandly replied.
"I smacked you. That is not considered as talking."
"But you did say what did you hit me for! And this is considered as talking" I mimicked her and took another bite. "It was like an advance smack."
"You guys are still acting like how you did during high school. It's fascinating. Really." Lenny broke our fight and we just stuffed our faces with food and shrugged.
"So, Lenny, what do you do here?" I asked him out of curiosity.
"Well, I have multiple jobs. I help at the mechanic shop and sometimes show tourists around." He explained. "I also help with small stuff here and there."
"That's awesome!" Brianna exclaimed.
There was silence once again as we all were avoiding the elephant in the room. I mean we were all caught up about our new lives. Now whatever we spoke would somehow get connected to Rosalind and we were trying to move on.
"Excuse me?" A man's voice spoke, making all of us look at him.
He looked like the man I spotted at the funeral with the same dark brown hair and style. His sky blue t-shirt complimented his greenish hazel eyes very well. He looked a bit older than us. His voice was smooth as velvet but with a hint of hoarseness.
"Yes?" Lenny questioned him back.
"Can I join you guys?" He asked.
"There are plenty of others booths empty." Brianna stated.
He looked at me with pleading eyes because apparently he seemed nervous. I mean I was so lost right now. I didn't know this man, he was standing away from the crowd during the funeral as if he had done something wrong and now wanted to sit with us. I mean, we were all taught to not talk to strangers and it still applied today. I had no idea how I was going to be of any help.
"There is and I'm done eating and was leaving anyway. But, when I asked for the bill, this came with it." He said while handing Lenny a small piece of paper.
He opened it and looked back at the man and then looked at us. I rose my eyebrows to ask him what was going on. But before he said anything, he slid to the corner of the seat making room for the man who sat right in front of me.
"What's in the paper?" I asked him and without uttering a word, he handed it to me.
There was a sentence...more like a command written on it with black ink.
"Read it out loud." Brianna curiously said, jumping up and down. I firmly held her arm to stop the childish behaviour. Who would believe that this famous singer was actually a child trapped in a body of a grown woman.
"Go sit with Rosalind's friends. There is something waiting for all of you." I read the note and then looked at the mystery man who just shrugged.
Wow. That was pretty direct.
"I saw you at the funeral. How do you know her?" I asked, crumpling the note, placing my hand on the table and interlacing my fingers.
I couldn't handle it anymore. I wanted to know who this man was and how he knew Rosalind.
"I was a friend of hers too." He replied and I squinted my eyes at him.
"What is waiting for all of us?" Lenny asked him.
"I don't know. I just read the note and walked over here."
"What is your name? And how do you know we are her friends?" Brianna whispered.
"Why are you whispering?" I asked her but she didn't pay attention to me.
"I'm Jordan Hayes and Rosalind told me about all of you. She even showed me pictures." He said and my body stiffened at this. Why would Rosalind do that?
"Should we ask for the bill too?" Lenny asked with an unsure tone.
"Yeah." I answered. "Maybe we'll get another note."
After a short while, Carl came with our bill and we all contributed. We waited again for him to bring us the change and when he brought us the change, there was another similar note with a ten dollar bill.
We all exchanged confused looks but we all knew that the previous note referred to this. Jordan picked up the paper and unfolded it.
After reading the note, he passed it to Lenny and there were zero expressions on his face. When Lenny read whatever was written inside both him and Jordan looked at each other with furrowed brows.
"What's with the suspense, guys?" Brianna hissed and snatched the paper from Lenny's hand.
"Read it out loud." I said.
Brianna cleared her throat and said,
"Rosalind didn't kill herself. She was murdered."
Hello Angels!!
Cue to suspense music!
How do you like Jordan?
What's the deal with those notes?
Any idea who may have murdered our dear Rosalind?
I'm not really a fan of this chapter. So, let me know where I can improve.
