Chapter 36: Cofessions and Confrontations (Part 2.)
I felt ecstatic to interrogate with Kelly. I had not said it out loud, but she was really impressive. Her headstrong personality and the love she had for her job never failed to motivate me. When I first saw her, I knew she was passionate. Her greenish blue eyes had a hint of twinkle. Her outlook on things and perception of the world had always been a positive one. After being a detective for such a long time, people would usually assume they become emotionally disturbed, but Kelly was still in touch with her emotions.
Kelly had informed me that when she was carrying out her own investigation while we were busy chasing the clues, she found out that Jessica Monroe was not as innocent as she painted herself to be. It gave me immense happiness to know that I was the one going to interrogate her and not Valerie because knowing my best friend, she would have let her bitchy attitude slide. Jessica was sly and it frustrated me how nobody saw that.
Rosalind may have been a saint and forgiven her for her past behaviour, but every single person in this investigation knew that I was far from a saint. I was ruthless and blunt. Not my best qualities, I agree, but they came handy when they were needed.
Jessica had been working at a flower shop and we were going there to scrutise her. I had my plan ready to corner her and leaving her no options but to spill the truth. I was pretty sure that Kelly would not like it, but I had my revenge mode on and nobody could have stopped that. Nobody but Valerie of course.
I was waiting outside the floral shop for Kelly to arrive so that we could go inside. The cat-eyed sunglasses with a red rim protected my eyes from the glazing sun. My overly classy outfit resulted in the people to look at me like I was an alien. Although, a few teenagers did greet me and asked for an autograph to which I happily complied.
A gentle tap on my shoulder made me look up from my phone. Kelly had her hands on the forehead, covering her eyes from the sunrays and I gave her a small smile.
"I have been standing here for fifteen minutes! Where were you?" I asked.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, your highness. Let's go inside. Shall we?" I dead-panned at her sarcasm and followed her inside.
The smell of several scented flowers filled my nose as I entered the quaint, little shop. The lights were dim and the space was air-conditioned. The change in the atmosphere was happily welcomed after standing outside in the excessive heat for so long.
"Do you see Jessica?" Kelly asked and I looked around before answering, "No, but I don't think her shift has started yet. We still have two minutes left."
"Ask around about her. See what her collegues think of her," she ordered and went to talk with the cashier.
I shrugged and looked around for an employee. My eyes caugh a guy staring at me with a wide smile on his face. It made me feel uncomfortable at first, but when I saw him wearing his work uniform, I waved at him. He walked over to wear I was standing and extended his hand for a handshake.
"You look even prettier in a closer view," he flirted, making me roll my eyes in the my mind, but keep the coy smile on my face. "I'm Aaron and also a huge fan of your songs."
"I love my fans! I am so glad you like my songs," I said.
"Like? No no, I love them. Especially 'My Everything,' the lyics and the melody of that song is so soothing."
"I am looking for a flower to gift my friend. We are meeting each other after ages," I lied.
"You should took a look at our bouquets. We have this one with red roses and chocolates-"
"Jessica doesn't like chocolates," I blurted out.
"Jessica Monroe?" He rose an eyebrow and I let out an evil smirk but quickly masked it with a surprised look.
"Yes! Do you know her?"
"She works here. Her shift starts soon," he answered. "But, Jessica loves chocolates."
I had to be quick with my thinking to come up with an answer that didn't seem made up. "Seems like she lied to me then. Back in high school, she didn't really like chocolates. That explains her bitter persoanlity." I whispered the last sentence, but Aaron seemed to have heard me and his confused look gave it. "It was a joke," I chuckled. "Jessica is the sweeted person I've met."
"No offence, but she is kinda bitter," he said.
"What makes you say that?"
"I don't think I should tell you, you know...considering the fact that you are her friend."
"It doesn't matter. I want to know," I batted my eyelashes and placed my hand on his shoulder. His cheeks reddened at the contact and I became sweeter. "Please?"
"Alright," he began. "She treats everybody here like they don't matter. She doesn't give a damn about this shop, she is only doing it for extra credits. She is so mean all the time. We literally talk behind her back all the time and do you know Rosalind?"
"Yeah, what about her?"
"She had a fight with her in this shop and said some really bad things about her."
"What things?"
"I shouldn't- I have already said too much."
The anger made my blood boil. How dare Jessica insult the girl who decided to spare her all those years ago. How could she? This is why I was always said she did not deserve anybody's politeness because she was a plain jerk and did not care about anybody but her. I didn't bother to flirt further and just demanded the truth. "Damnit Aaron, what did she say?"
"Brianna?" Before Aaron could give into my intimidation and answer my question, the annoying voice of Jessica interrupted us.
I turned around and never in my life had I been so annoyed by looking at somebody's face. I walked over to her and dragged her out of the shop. Kelly yelled out my name and tried to stop me, but I was too triggered to stop. Once we were out of the shop, I pushed her on the wall and folded my arms, staring her dead in the eyes.
"What the hell did you say to Rosalind?" I urged. "Bitch, if you don't answer me, I swear to god I will commit a murder and will happily go to jail."
"Brianna!" Kelly shouted, her voice high-pitched but not surprised that I'll say something like this. "We are not scaring her away. What are you doing?"
"Aaron told me that Jessica did something really bad to Rosalind," I looked at Kelly, fighting back the tears of fear and trying to stay stone cold.
"Is this true?" Kelly looked at Jesscia who was massaging the back of her head. "Answer me."
"She got what she deserved," Jessica smirked and I snapped my head in her direction. Before I could jump on her and ruin that shitty face, Kelly held me back.
"What do you mean?" Kelly asked.
"Why are you so calm?" I asked Kelly.
"I told you, never let your personal feelings in the way of questioning somebody. It ruins things and also doesn't get you the answers."
"I meant, Rosalind wasn't who she showed herself to be. She was a two-faced jerk who got what she deserved."
"Watch your language, Jessica. If you think I won't punch you, you're thinking wrong." I warned.
"Both of you, just stop it!" Kelly frustratingly yelled. The both of us immediately shut up and looked at her. "If any of you do anything to spite each other, you'll will have to face me and let me tell you, the angry me isn't pretty."
"Sorry," I muttered under my breathe.
"Now, Jessica, why did you fight with Rosalind and why do you think she deserved what she had coming."
"Rosalind pretended to be an angel, but in fact, she was a devil in disguise," Jessica spoke.
"Why would you say that?" I asked.
"Because she might have been easy on my in high school, but she was the reason I lost faith in love. Do you remember the senior year prom? When Valerie brought Derek to the dance because Lola slept with her boyfriend? I had a nice chat with Derek that time. He seemed so understanding and polite, that I developed a crush on him. After that, we met a few times outside of school and my feelings just became stronger for him."
"Did you fall in love with him?" Kelly questioned.
"I did. After school was over, I heard about the fight that happened between these three and I thought it would be a good opportunity to swoop in and become better friends with Rosalind. My plan worked out just fine. Rosalind did become my friend but we were never close until she knocked on my door and had a meltdown in my room."
"When was this?"
"A few months ago," she replied. "She told me how she was pregnant and not with Lenny's child. She was scared and had no idea what to do. She told me how I wanted to be friends with her and how it was a good time to be there for her. So, I did it. I took her to the orphanage and introduced her to the kids and hoped it helped her in making a decision about her baby. When it did help her, she invited me over for dinner and I grabbed that chance to spend some more time with Derek. Soon, I was good friends with the both of them."
"We get it, you got close with the love of your life. None of this explains the fight or what makes her evil," I snapped.
"Brianna, you're attitude," Kelly corrected.
"She is beating around the bush, it's frustrating."
"Rosalind wanted to mend the distance with Lenny by going out on a date. She came to my shop to buy some flowers and we got into talking and I told her about my feelings. She didn't even take a second to consider them but told me that it was never going to happen. Derek would never look at me that way and I was just wasting my time."
"That led to the fight?"
"Yes," Jesicca nodded, guilty about the incident now.
"What words did you use in the fight?"
"Why does it matter?"
"Because those words could be why she died," I said but my voice was not angry anymore. It was calm. "Rosalind was going through a tough time in her period and you saying that might have affected her. Val and I weren't there and she finally made a new friend who also stopped talking to her."
"I told her that being nice was just a facade and she never meant a single word she said. I also remember mentioning something about the baby and I prayed that her relationship with Lenny ends. And I-"
"And you, what?" Kelly pushed further. "What else did you say?"
"I told her how I wished I never became friends with her."
"Alright. Thank you for your co-operation," Kelly sighed. "Brianna, let's go back. Valerie should be home by now too. We'll update each other."
"I'll be there, gimme a second," I informed but Kelly didn't leave. "I won't beat her, don't worry."
With that, it was just me and Jessica standing in front of each other, absolutely lost in words. She had tears in her eyes and they indicated that she had started to blame herself for Rose's death too. Valerie would have requested her to belive otherwise, but I was not her. I was trying to control my anger and approach her in a calm and collected way.
"You know, I forgive you," I smiled.
"For what?"
"For making fun of us in school because if you hadn't done that, we would not have gotten a chance to know Rosalind. She was a wonderful human being. I do not know why she told you that you and Derek will not happen, but I am sure she had her reasons. Her genuineness and ability to always see good in people was something I aspired to be. In our time together, she succeeded to teach me the value of people and the amazing bond of friendship. She taught me that it was okay to be selfless sometimes and there was no harm in caring about somebody. So, I forgive you. It is about time I let this grudge to. I am no more a petty person. I have decided to become a grown up."
"Was I really the reason she committed suicide?"
I let out a small chuckle before answering her question, "No. You weren't the only reason. I am to be blamed too. But yes, losing an amazing friendship for a guy was your loss. You really chose to be selfish and not change your ways. I don't blame you for befriending her because of Derek. That is something I would have done too. But, after realising Rosalind's angelic presense in my life, I would have stopped caring about the guy. But, it's fine. We are who we are."
I walked away after burying the hatchet and joined Kelly. We drove home silently, spending some time with ourselves and appreciating the little things.
I knew that Rosalind would be proud of me today. I just wished if she were here to tell me that.
