Chapter 35: Confessions and Confrontations (Part 1.)
I never liked to consider myself as a nail-biter, but here I was, chewing my nails as if that was my only source of food. My gaze was fixated on the television screen in front of me and my legs rests on my mom's lap who was watching her show.
"Stop biting your nails, Val," mother's voice made me stop my current action but that didn't stop the agitation I was feeling. Eventually, I started fidgeting with my thumbs. "Valerie!"
"What?" I looked at her, dumbfounded.
"Will you stop torturing your fingers? What has gotten into you?" She asked.
"Derek and I are going to meet Sarah Malone. I'm just nervous, I guess," I replied.
"Is she part of the investigation?"
"Yes. Supposedly, Rosalind used to have her sessions with Sarah," I answered.
"You can stop being such a nerve wreck. You're gonna do great. Now, let me watch the show my show in peace. You're distracting me," I let out a small laugh and rested my head on the hand rest of the couch, resting my eyes.
I small tap on my forehead made me open my left eye to check who it was and I saw Blake's face smiling at me.
"Dude!" I jerked up from the couch. "That was- don't ever do that again."
He laughed and I just smacked him again. "Why haven't you left?"
"Derek's running late. He should be here any minute now."
As if on cue, the doorbell rang, revealing Derek on the other side of the door.
"You ready?"
"I was ready an hour ago, now I'm just desperate to leave," I muttered and was about to leave, but Blake held my hand, stopping me. I looked up at his serious look masked his previously fun personality. "What's wrong?"
"Do you trust me with Jordan? Because if you don't, I can switch with Kelly and I'm sure she'll understand," he asked.
"Jordan and Brianna interrogating a possible innocent person together? Absolutely not happening," I scoffed.
"But after I tol-"
"I trust you, Blake."
His lips tugged upwards in one of his rare smiled and I planted a small peck on his cheek. Blake has been honest with me and shared one of his insecurities with me, it was about time I told him that I did trust him and I would never doubt him.
As many people liked to say, relationship is built on trust and the both of us were serious about our relationship, so we were in it together. He was confessing things out of his comfort zone and I decided to let him in and stop hiding me real emotions.
"I'm gonna go now. Don't think about it too much."
After saying our goodbyes, I got into the car and Derek drove away.
Sarah was no ordinary person and she was definitely not somebody you wanted to play with. She had a tendency to see through people and she was very good at her job. If Derek and I wanted to get out information out of her about her client, we had to be really careful and not bluff around much.
I asked Derek if he knew how to control his body posture and not give away the obvious tension and nervousness and when he denied, I made it my job that he was informed because I could not have any one of us screw this up. Not after all the times we lost.
"- so, I'll do the talking. If that's okay with you, I mean..."
"You should probably do the talking. This is difficult for me anyway," he assured me and I gave him a thumbs up.
The car halted in front of a small clinic, painted recently in beige and radiating freshness. Sarah knew how to make people comfortable.
We entered inside and were immediately greeted with the cold air and the receptionist.
I made an abrupt stop, making Derek check up on me.
"Are you okay?" He asked, placing a hand on my shoulder.
"No," I whispered.
The receptionist was nobody other than my only enemy. I was not a person who held grudges. I always forgave people and was usually known for my "big heart." But, Lola made sure she proved me wrong and showed everybody my angry side.
I did some awful things, no, I did one really awful thing to her that ruined her reputation in school and took away her glorious experiences of high school.
"What is it?" He popped an eyebrow.
"It's not a what, it's a who."
"Lola?" He followed my gaze and asked me. "What did she do to you?"
"Nothing. Why don't you do the talking. I'll just stand here."
He gave me an 'are you sure' look and went to talk to Lola. I only heard murmurs since I was far away from the desk.
In the next minute, Derek gestured me to follow him and I silently walked but mistakenly made eye contact with Lola. Anybody would be blind if they didn't see the hatred in her eyes for me.
"Why did you do that?"
"I called her a whore during her dad's wedding," I said in a really low, ashamed tone.
"What?!"
"What? She was the one who slept with my boyfriend while I was dating him and I feel guilty now, okay?"
Derek opened Sarah's office door for me and I walked into the serene room.
"Ahh!! You guys, come in." Sarah shrieked and got up to hug us. This was one of the reasons why I didn't want to be a therapist in this town. If somebody familiar came to meet you, you were expected to be friendly and unprofessional.
"How are you doing?" I nervously chuckled and straightened my dress of any crinkles.
"I have never been better. What about you?" She took a seat in her chair whereas, Derek and I sat on the lavender couch.
"I have been trying to move on," Derek honestly answered. "But something has been holding me back."
I wanted to correct him again and tell him that it's not someone, it's somebody. None of us had full closures. And we were not going to get it until we found the killer and punished him for his actions. But, I decided to stay quiet.
"I heard about Rosalind and I was so shocked. She used to come see me. I'm so sorry that you have to go through this," she expressed her condolences and I grabbed the opportunity to question her more about her sessions with Rose.
"Rosalind used to come see you?" I asked, pretending to be surprised with the sudden new information. I should have been an actor.
"Yeah. She was going through some crisis and wanted to share it with somebody."
"I feel like such a terrible friend, oh god," I buried my face in my hands. "I should have been there for her. I should have. I let some stupid fight get the best of our friendship."
"It's not your fault, Valerie. You know that," Sarah smiled and looked at me.
"You sure about that? Because it does seem like it was my fault."
"What makes you think that?"
Till now, I was doing good. Sarah didn't seem to suspect anything and Derek just participated by patting on my back, comforting me.
"I had a phone. I could have called her and apologised. But instead, I just started a new life, leaving my past behind me like it didn't matter."
"We do that because of guilt. You cannot blame yourself forever. Plus, do you think Rosalind would have been alive if you had stayed in her life?"
"I think so, yes. She was depressed. I could have listened to her problems and provide a helpful suggestion."
"Rosalind was a strong minded person. I never thought she would even think of suicide."
"I guess depression is not to be underestimated." I scoffed and wiped away the tears forming in my eyes.
"Definitely not. Derek, do you hold yourself accountable too?"
"No," he answered. "I'm just disappointed in myself that I was ignorant of her and I took her for granted."
"Sarah, nobody knows what Rose was going through. You could help us get closure if you would just share what she talked about during these sessions."
"Absolutely not. That information stays confidential and you should know how it works, Valerie," Sarah said, but her tone had a kind of warning. "But, if you are wondering whether she blamed you, the answer is no. She didn't. She never stopped loving you or thinking about you."
"What about me?" Derek inquisitively asked.
"She loved you too. You were her brother."
We spent the next remaining time talking about our emotions about Rosalind's demise. I didn't give up and tried to twist the questions and get information and I kept on failing.
Once the alarm clock rang, we thanked Sarah for having us and left the room. I looked at Derek with sorrow for not making a break in the case and he reciprocated the feelings.
"I'll get the car," he said and went ahead.
I decided to stay back and apologise to Lola. Whatever happened between us was many years ago. I have had time to grow since then, plus I had no excuse to treat her that way during her dad's special day. I had no right to be so bitter towards her.
But instead of seeing her, I saw an empty desk with no sign of Lola, but a sticky note. I peeled it off the desk and was slightly disappointed when the handwritings didn't match.
If you want to know about what troubled Rosalind, meet me at Picasso, tonight. Also, make sure you feel your attitude behind or else you're not getting any answers.
- Lola.
I crumpled the note and shoved it in my pocket, walking towards the car.
I decided to not tell Derek about the note, because I wasn't sure if this was some revenge plan or did she genuinely want to help me out.
Whatever it was, atleast I got something to work with.
Hello Angels!
What do you think are Lola's intentions??
Did ya'll like Sarah?
Originally, I was going to write three different POV's in one chapter, but I decided to split them in different chapters since that seemed less messy.
Stay tuned for the next chapter :)
