Chapter 30: Reunited.
I stepped into the cold, dark night and took a deep breathe. Freedom had never smelled so good. The sky was filled with sparkling stars and a half moon, hidden behind grey clouds.
My surroundings were silent. The only voice I heard was a buzzer as a guard stepped out and stared at me. I searched around for Brianna's car, but she hadn't arrived yet.
So, I took my leisure time to stretch my muscles and close my eyes, taking in the current feeling.
It was easy to bail me after Valerie was beaten up by my rival gang. Blake just pointed out the mere fact that if they could stab her for putting their member in jail, it wasn't difficult to plant those drugs in my pocket.
Since I was in the town's local prison, it didn't take any more convincing than that and they decided to let me go. I was glad that we agreed to take their help in the very first place.
"You ready?" A chirpy voice asked me.
I smiled at Kelly and walked towards the car, waving my hand.
"Let's get out of here," I said, not caring how desperate that sounded.
"Did they give you everything they took from you?" She asked.
"Yep."
"Alright then, where do you want to go?"
"Valerie's place. I have to see how she is doing."
Kelly gave me a half salute and started the engines. I looked out of the town like it was my first time seeing it. The lights, the people, everything made me feel warm and happy.
"How you feeling finally being back in town?" Kelly questioned.
"You have no idea how much relieved I feel. I gotta thank Blake to get me out of that hell hole."
After she asked me about my experience, there was another brief moment of silence.
"I know you just got out of jail, but tomorrow we have to go to that abandoned place where we were originally going to meet the killer," she spoke. "I thought it was best if I brief you on the situation and save everybody else the trouble."
"Why are we going there? And why did you'll plan to see the killer in an abandoned place?"
"It's near the ending of this town and for this case to still be a secret, it was the only place Brianna and Valerie could think of."
"And why are we going there tomorrow?"
"Lenny has been kidnapped and we have our doubts that he is being held captive over there," she answered.
"Do we still think Lenny killed Rosalind?"
"I don't because he has an alibi on the day she was murdered."
"Isn't it funny how every lead we have goes down the drain? The killer must be one hell of a dude to clear his tracks so perfectly," I scoffed.
Kelly murmured something incoherent and I didn't bother to ask her because I was more focused on the house in front of me.
Once the car was parked, I didn't waste another moment and knocked on the door. Brianna opened the door and squealed with excitement.
"You're back! I'm so glad to see you again," she gushed and gestured me to come in. "I'm sorry I didn't come to pick you up, I was talking with Valerie and totally lost track of time."
"That's alright. Kelly and I had a good talk in the car."
After greeting and thanking Blake, I made my way to Val's room. Brianna asked me not to knock and just walk in since she wasn't asleep.
So, I followed her instructions and walked in the beige coloured room along with Jonas Brother's posters hung almost everywhere.
Valerie was writing something which I assumed to be a journal.
"Miss me?" I asked, immediately grabbing her attention.
"Jordan!" She exclaimed and got up. "How are you?!"
"I'm perfectly okay. I wish I could say the same for you, though. Why would you put yourself in such a risky situation? I got so worried when Brianna told me that you were admitted in the hospital."
"I don't blame you and I'm much better now. It only hurts when I make a sudden movement," she smiled and patted her back. I took a seat next to her and looked at her fidgeting fingers.
"Why do I sense a little lie?"
"It's not, I swear."
"Unfortunately, you have taught us all about reading body language. So, I am having a tough time believing you."
"Fine," she let out a long sigh. "It hurts a little every time I make a movement. But I really wanna go with your guys tomorrow and I have to pretend that I'm doing better."
"Valerie, please don't do this to yourself. We all know that a lot of things could go wrong tomorrow. They have a good point not wanting to let you accompany us," I explained, hoping she won't be stubborn.
"I have made up my mind and I am coming tomorrow. Lenny could be in danger and as Kelly said, he was planning to propose to Rosalind and I can't lose him. I cannot lose another friend. I just can't."
After knowing that there was no making Valerie think the other way, I gave up and told her that her secret was safe with me.
Kelly, Blake and Brianna doom joined us and we discussed discussed the plan for tomorrow. Kelly has the blueprints of the kindergarten that was abandoned after being claimed it was an unsafe and dangerous place for the young children.
It wasn't a huge place. It had two floors and three doors which we could use to exit and enter. As described earlier, the place was abandoned and had many damage done to the property.
We all studied the blue prints carefully and did our best to make a fool proof plan.
Brianna called Derek thrice but he didn't answer the call. So, we decided to exclude him from our little escapade.
"So, it's all set. We all meet each other at Picasso tomorrow sharp at 6:00 pm and leave to get Lenny back," Blake said and looked at all of us and we nodded in confirmation.
"It's settled then. I'll see you guys tomorrow," I smiled and left.
Valerie gave me my motorbike's key back and I drove it back to the place I liked to refer to as my home.
