Chapter 27: The Perfect Date.
"Are you sure you're not hungry?" Mom asked me for the hundredth time. I was discharged from the hospital and was advised to keep my movements to the minimum and rest as much as possible. Dr. Salovey also said that my body took time to heal since it was weak.
I used to lose my appetite during stressful times and this past month had been nothing but unnerving. But after that, my mom always hovered above me to make sure I consumed sufficient amount of food every day.
"Yes mom. I'm full. You already made me drink orange juice, french toast and a fruit dish. Plus, I just had lunch. If you feed me even a little, I'll die and I'm not even joking." I sighed and closed my eyes for a nap.
"Fine. But if you need anything, let me know," she smiled and caressed my forehead.
"Noted."
"Honey?"
"Mhhmm?"
"Is there anything you want to tell me?
I opened my eyes and looked at my mom who had a serious look on her face along with a hint of worry. I knew exactly what she meant, but I hesitated before answering her question. I was debating whether I should let her know the truth or not. While thinking, I realized that there was a heavy chance that without Blake, Caleb would have killed me without remorse.
My parents would have been completely clueless on the matter and someone else would have to be responsible to tell them the truth and that too if they felt the need.
"Rosalind didn't commit suicide. She was murdered," I murmured.
"Oh my god!" She gasped and placed her hand on top of mine.
"We found a letter when we went to Picasso for the first time after the funeral. Since then we have been trying to connect the dots and find out who killed her."
"Is that why Kelly and Blake are here?" She questioned and I nodded in answer.
"Val, we almost lost you. Did you know the shock I received when out of the blue, Blake called us at 12:30 am? This is too risky and I'm not sure if I like you participating in these cruel games."
"But mom, wouldn't you want to find out who murdered me if I was in Rosalind's shoes and you in her parent's? I'm just doing what a good friend needs to do. We already had a fallout, I have to do this!" I calmly replied.
"Look, you're old enough to make your decisions and if you choose to continue, I'll understand. But you need to know that you are the most important person of our life and we won't know how to move on if something happened to you," mom let a tear roll down and I immediately engulfed her, closing my eyes and letting her love surround me.
"I promise to not do anything stupid," I said and kissed her cheek.
"Alright. Get some rest," She smiled and tucked a piece of hair behind my ear. "Also, you have a surprise tonight."
Once my mom left the room, I pulled up the sheets and closed my eyes, all my mind could think of what the surprise could be. But being on so much medication and pills, it didn't take long for me to get lost in the dream world.

Holy crap.
I cringed as I tried to get up. After a satisfactory sleep, I finally forced my eyes open. I felt hazy and numb but it was expected. The clock on my bedside table indicated 7:00 pm. I grabbed my throbbing head and walked towards the bathroom.
My hand clutched my wound as a sudden wave of pain hit me as I tried to move.
I opened my door and stood for a second. Kelly got out of her room at the same time and immediately held my hand to make sure I don't fall or faint.
"You okay?" She asked me.
"Yeah, I just felt whoozy," I answered.
"Do you want to go somewhere?"
"The washroom."
Kelly led me till the washroom and insisted to wait outside and help me back to my room.
After I was done, she took my hand and I glanced inside the kitchen and saw Blake making something.
"Why is Blake cooking?" I asked Kelly who panicked after my question.
"Ummm...no reason. Are you gonna get dressed?" She changed the topic.
I looked down to my black sweatpants and a white tank top. "For what?"
"Nothing."
"Kelly, are YOU okay?"
"Never been better," she gave me a cheery smile and got out of my room.
I opened my phone to check my messages. Brianna and Derek were the only ones who had texted me. Brianna wanted to check up on me and Derek wanted to ask when he could come and see me.
I gave them their respective answers and started watching Buzzfeed Unsolved on YouTube. A subtle knock interrupted me and I asked whoever it was to come in.
Blake walked in, carrying a tray filled with food. He was wearing black jeans a matching jacket and a plain white t-shirt. I smiled realizing we were wearing the same color combination. He temporarily set the tray on the nightstand, excused himself and came back with a folding table.
He placed the table in front of me, placed the dishes on the table and finally took a seat facing me.
I looked at the food which were a treat for my eyes. There was a bowl of spaghetti and vegetarian meatballs, well, just balls considering there was no meat in them, a plate of garlic bread and cheese rolls.
"What's going on?" I asked him with a puzzled look.
"This is our first date," he gave me a cheeky smile.
My heart skipped a beat and I scanned his face for a joke, but he had a most genuine look. His eyes had lit up and there was a glow of happiness on his face.
"I'm sorry, what?" I asked again, not being able to digest.
"Well, we kissed and you were the one who initiated it, so I just thought that you know, a date was long overdue," his expressions changed, staring at my lost eyes. "Please don't tell me that you kissed me because of the drugs. You did hear my confessions, right? I can take this all bac-"
"Blake stop! This is perfect. I just can't believer you did all this for me," I replied in assurance.
"Really? Brianna told me you liked cheesy dates,"
"I love them."
Blake got up one more time to bring some red wine and I buried my face in a pillow and let out a scream.
I scanned the room, my cheeks flushed with constantly smiling goofily. I should have taken Kelly's advice and changed into something decent. My hair were a mess since I hadn't combed them and face super oily.
I still couldn't believe that Blake made me all this. I thought about the kiss so many times, but never discussed it with him. I was afraid that I made a mistake, but now it was the best decision I made in a long time.
I sneaked pictures of the food and sent them to Brianna, who replied to me in all caps. She was totally freaking out.
"Sorry, you have all my attention now." Blake said and walked in with a bottle of wine and its glasses.
"Alright." I giggled.
"How are you feeling now?" He asked.
"I'm still a little sore, but I'm much better now. Although, I need to stop taking those sleeping pills, I sleep more than I'm awake because of them," I whined and he just laughed.
"You need the rest."
He served us the food and I silently took a bite of the scrumptious cheese roll and closed my eyes, relishing the taste.
"This is amazing! I had no idea you were such a good cook."
"My mom taught me how to cook."
"That's so nice of her. You've never really talked about you're family before. But then again, we were busy catching a cold-blooded murderer."
"My dad died when I was young. My mom took care of the finances and made sure I had a proper, happy life. But she passed away of cancer too," A glint of sadness flashed and I patted his hand awkwardly, trying my best to comfort him.
"I'm so sorry."
"Eh, it's alright. I'm over it now."
I took another spoonful of the spaghetti and asked him what made him want to be a detective.
"I always wanted to fight for justice. I was very passionate about it and I found out that I could make my dream true and voila! I became a detective."
"That too, a good one."
"What about you? What's your story?" He questioned me.
"Well, I always so the city as a challenge. I heard thousands of stories from thousands or people. I wanted to prove my worth by becoming someone from scratch. Plus, all my friends always called me Aunt Agony because I gave the best of advises and was usually non-judgmental."
"Valerie Mitchell, you just made me fall for you all over again." He sweetly said, making my cheeks light up a bright shade of red.
"Blake Smith, nobody has ever made me feel special like you have."
The rest of the night, we ate, laughed and had a great time.
Blake cleaned up after we were done, brought me my medicine and asked me to rest.
"Good night, Valerie." he greeted me.
"Blake?" I whispered his name and stopped him from leaving me.
"Do you need something?"
I nodded and patted the empty space next to me, "Stay."
