Chapter 1: Are you kidding me?

"Psst. Wake up, Valerie." Someone whispered my name as well as shook me.

I opened my eyes and blinked a few times to adjust to my dark room. After all of my senses returned back to me, I woke up with a jerk and looked at the face of my roommate who was alarmed and terrified.

Tracy was all sweaty and clearly looked worried. I got up from the bed and stood in front of her, trying my best to read her expressions. I also checked the alarm clock to see if I overslept, but the time indicated three in the morning. So, I shifted my attention back to her and gave her a confused look.

"What is wrong Trace?" I asked, stifling a yawn.

"I think someone broke into our apartment." She frantically whispered.

All of the sleepiness left my body as she completed her sentence. My body kicked in the fight or flight mode and adrenaline rushed in.

"What?!" I whisper shouted.

"Listen." She pointed to the door. "I can hear someone in our living room."

I walked towards the door and pressed my ear against it. There was dead silence since it was the middle of the night. So, I could hear every small sound coming from my surrounding area, hell! I could even hear my own heart beating as if it was trying to win a race. Along with the minute sounds, I also heard the noise Tracy was referring to...someone was rumbling in our living room.

"Dial 911 and be ready to press the call button just in case." I ordered her and she nodded vigorously.

I scanned the room for any object I could use to defend us. My eyes landed on a small show-piece of a wooden doll and grabbed it. I wrapped my fingers around it tightly because I did not want to lose grip when I actually had to use it.

The sound stopped and so I pressed my ears against the door even more. After paying careful attention, I heard someone opening Tracy's room door and I swear to god my heart skipped a beat as my mind started jumping to the worse case scenarios.

Later, I heard the footsteps approaching my door and prepared myself to fight this person and protect the both of us. I gave Tracy an assuring nod and she just covered her mouth with fear. I stepped back from the door as I saw the doorknob moving.

My eyes were darted one the floor as the door was slowly opening, making a creaky noise. I gulped the lump formed in my throat and swung the statue with all my force at the unknown person.

The both of us heard a thump as the robber fell on the ground and groaned in pain.

"Jesus Christ!" A familiar voice yelled. "It's me! Christopher."

"Are you kidding me?" I yelled back in disbelief. "Who the hell enters someone's house at three in the morning and acts like a thief!"

Tracy turned on the lights and I sat on the floor with relief as I realized that it was nobody but my roommate's boyfriend.

Tracy and Christopher were the only friends I had in the city. Technically, I was born and raised in a small town called Maplebirch.

It was just like most towns. Everyone knew everyone, we were like a big family and there were many social events and carnivals that kept us all closer and strengthened our bond. But, the career options were limited. I always dreamt of being a psychologist but the scope of it in my town was none.

Everyone thought that the people who visited psychologists were either neurotic or possessed. I hated that thinking but couldn't do anything about it. So, I shifted homes.

I came here with my high school friend, Brianna. Currently, she is a very successful and famous singer. I'm talking Selena Gomez kind of success. Of course, the struggle was real...but now she is living the dream.

We hardly spoke. We haven't talked since the time we both came here. The cities changed us for good. I missed Rosalind every now and then. We did meet each other a few times, but we don't talk much either. Rosalind was our other high school friend. The three of us were inseparable back then but now, we were strangers.

It all happened because of that one big fight. That one fight which changed the fate of our friendship. But, I was happy here with Tracy now. She was nice and helpful. She was the one who offered me to live here.

"I'm sorry. I was decorating the coffee table to surprise Trace for tomorrow's anniversary. I know how much she loves her breakfast and I wanted it to be perfect." He explained.

"Then why in the world did you open my door?" I asked.

"Because I went to check in on Tracy and didn't find her." He replied.

"You are such a creep." I shook my head.

"Awww! Babe, I love you." Tracy said in a really squeaky voice.

"Both of you, get out of my room and let me get some sleep." I said and got up.

The two of them smiled at me and left. I breathed out and went back to my bed and pulled the comforter all the way till the top.

...

I opened one eye first and waited for any unusual sound. I did not want to walk in on my friends having a make out session or even worse, having sex on the coffee table. Oh, what a disgusting sight that would be.

Luckily there was complete silence. So, I woke up and went directly to the bathroom. I brushed my teeth, combed my messy and tangled hair and took a hot, soothing shower.

I wrapped the robe around my body walked straight to the kitchen. I opened the fridge and poured some juice in a glass. I looked up and realized that there was no one home.

Hmm...Weird.

I shrugged off the fuzzy feeling and found a note on the kitchen counter. It was from Tracy and it said that they already had eaten and were going to be out for the entire day.

I smiled and crumpled the note before throwing it in the bin. I made myself from panckaes with sizzling chocolate syrup along with the juice and enjoyed the most important meal alone.

After eating, I went to my room and changed into a pink shirt with grey flowers and paired them with dark blue jeans. I also put on brown sandals and looked in the mirror one more time.

This was a routine for me now. Wake up, have breakfast, get ready and go for work. Well, I didn't have a proper job, it was more like an internship provided by the university.

I wanted to be a psychologist for almost my entire life. Knowing how human brain works always fascinated me. I was always good at reading people by their body language and observation. I also had friends who came to me for advice on various matters.

Currently, my job was the write down the case history of the clients and hand them to Dr. Cruz. I would also get a chance to be present at some of her sessions every now and then. Gina Cruz was absolutely amazing at her job. She has taught me so many things and I'm forever grateful to her.

I locked the door and checked it twice. I swiftly descended the stairs and greeted the doorman. Stepping out of the apartment building, I took a deep breath of fresh air.

Today was going to be a good day.
