Day 38
The sound of a thousand voices echoing against each other filled the air. Reporters from all the stations possible where shouting against the barricade of policemen who tried to keep them at bay by merely blocking their way into the station.
But the reporters were insatiable with their endless questions and querulous remarks. They were like vultures hanging on the edge of chief inspectors every word and shooting questions before he could even finish his sentence.
When DI Morgan; the inspector in charge of the investigation took over, the media went into a frenzy, throwing questions after question.
"Is it true that Olivia Henderson was murdered and buried in a lake?"
"Do the police have any leads, any possible suspects?"
"Is there a serial killer on the loose?"
"Can the police comment on the leaked information of the dead girl found in Lake Nockamixon two days ago?"
"Is the dead girl missing person Olivia Henderson?"
When the detective cleared his throat to speak everyone fell dead silent. The eager reporters were perched over each other, each inching closer to catch every detail.
"I suppose since it's now out in the open there's no point denying it but it will be better if you hear the truth from us instead of unknown sources on the internet. It has been recently confirmed that the person found in Lake Nockamixon two days ago is Olivia Henderson," the detective spoke slowly and clearly like he was spelling out for school children.
When he paused their voices buzzed through the air again but this time it was more desperate, more frenzied. They sounded like a bunch of locusts that just wouldn't stop humming to a point where it became deafening.
It was sheer mania all because an article of a dead person found in that lake was published two days ago on an online website. An article which soon went viral not only because of its content but because of the graphic photos it displayed of a human body lying on the mud with pale skin that was severely wrinkled by prolonged exposure to water and dark soulless eyes that stared unseeingly to heaven.
Ben sat in the waiting room staring at the scene before him. He had arrived a few hours earlier when the detective called him. By then he already knew the Olivia Henderson case was now a homicide case but it was what the detective told him after that made the bile rise up to his throat and his insides twist with panic.
To Ben the voices were all a blurr, a small buzz in his ear, a welcome distraction to the silence in his room and the town hall. He could only imagine what was going on in the Greenberg's minds at the moment. Obviously they mourned for the girl but they were definitely thinking of Samantha. About whether she had suffered the same fate.
He knew this because he had thought the exact same thing when he read the article online. He knew he should have been with them right know, giving them the support they needed. But he just couldn't look them in the eyes. Especially not after what DI Morgan had told him earlier that evening.
Ben noticed the room had fallen silent again and he looked up to see the detective had risen his hand to indicate he was going to speak.
"I can assure everyone here that we are doing the best we can to solve this case as soon as possible. I am sorry but for now we are unable to disclose any information about the investigation. And I would like to ask the public to not buy into any other articles that may surface on the internet before going through us first. Thank you." And with that the detective turned around and motioned for the other officers to close the doors on the reporters.
He walked towards Ben all the while cursing under his breath. "Darn reporters, couldn't they wait for the press release? All because of that stupid article. Ducain! Get me our IT guy, ask him to track down that bloody website and shut the damn thing down."
A dark haired officer responded. "There's no point it's on so many other websites now as well."
"I don't care! Track down the website and block it so that nothing else comes up next."
Ben was staring at the wall trying to control his breathing when the officer placed his hand on his shoulder.
"What the hell are you still doing here kid? I didn't even notice you sitting here."
Ben wanted to respond but the words got stuck in his throat.
"Never mind I doubt you can leave now, judging by the bunch of crazies still outside. Come to my office, I think we both need a cup of coffee."
Ben followed him silently knowing he was better off here than anywhere else and a cup of coffee might actually be good since he wasn't going to be sleeping anytime soon. He could feel his hands shaking from the overwhelming anxiety he felt inside.
Once he took a seat, DI Morgan went outside and came back with two cups of coffee. During these past few days Ben and the detective had developed a sort of symbiotic relationship. It was obvious the detective was grateful for Ben's help and in return Ben got all the latest information on the investigation. As a result he had become a regular at the police station, dropping by almost everyday.
As Ben stared at Samantha's file on the detective's table two words crossed his mind. The two words that have been playing through his head for the past few hours. Jerry Mathers. Jerry fucking Mathers. The guy who had been conveniently missing for the past one week. The guy who was last seen with Olivia Henderson and the guy who's finger prints matched the ones on the letters.
If that wasn't confirmatory enough Samantha's fingerprints were found in his bedroom the day before when the police searched his house. They had also found a room in his basement that could be locked from the outside with a bed, a cupboard etc. Like it was prepared to keep someone there captive.
Ben could feel his hands shaking. Whether it was from his anxiety or anger he wasn't sure but all he wanted to do was wring them around Jerry Mathers neck and squeeze it until it snapped. The guy was a sick, delusional bastard and he deserved to be shot in the head.
"Why didn't you tell them his name? At least then it would be easier to find him since we have the public to help us." With bloodshot eyes Ben stared at the detective angrily.
"That's not the way to do it. Besides we don't want to scare him into hiding, if he knows were looking for him it might be more difficult to find him. Anyway there's a way to handle it. We've already alerted all the stations as well as headquarters, there's an APB put out for him right now as we speak. All thanks to you boy. This guy had no other criminal records we wouldn't have found him if it weren't for you're letter and that nagging neighbor of his," the detective attempted to make Ben feel better with his flattery.
"I know you know what you're doing. It's just-- it's just," Ben's voice broke. The information suddenly became too much to handle. "It's all my fault, if I had just stayed that night and walked her back to her dorm none of this would've happened."
For the first time since Samantha had gone missing Ben truly felt like he had lost. The fact that she and Olivia were linked to the same man and Olivia was found dead could only mean one thing. He had always believed that she would be alive but now he wasn't so sure and that scared him shitless. He couldn't handle it, he just couldn't.
"There's no use blaming yourself. If you were there that night, he would've taken her another time. The whole thing looked premeditated. Believe me once we catch this guy, he's gonna be locked away for a bloody long time I tell you,"the detective reassured him from across the table making no move to console Ben.
It wouldn't matter if Sam wasn't alive. Ben cleared his throat to reply. "When are you going to break the news to her parents?"
"Well until we find a body she's still considered just missing, but I will have to let them know soon."
Ben was about to speak again when the phone on the detective's desk rang. He picked it up quickly and looked pleased at what he was hearing.
"Thank you for the information, we'll head out there now."
"What happened? Where are you going?"Ben asked.
The detective was already adjusting his gun holster and putting on his coat. He went to the doorway and shouted.
"We got a call regarding the chief suspects current location. I'm going to head over there now and I will need as many officers as I can get. Also Patricia I want you to alert the headquarters before we leave."
At hearing this Ben shot up from his seat. "I'm coming with you detective. Please don't try to stop me I'll just drive myself and follow you."
Not looking the least bit surprised DI Morgan sighed and gestured for him to follow. "Fine but you stay in the car and no interfering okay?"
Ben just nodded his head but he cracked his knuckles with determination as he followed.
"We'll see,"he said under his breath.
***
Samantha felt the bed move next to her. Jerry was constantly tossing and turning in his sleep she wondered if it would be a good idea to get up and leave. She glanced at him cautiously before she sat up slowly.
He stirred a little making her heart beat faster and then he stopped. Samantha silently stood up and looked for the piece of string she had hidden behind the curtains, she picked it up and walked back to him. She was about to touch his hand when he turned again mumbling something in his sleep.
"Screw that,"she thought realizing that he would definitely wake up while she tried to tie him up. She crept towards the door and opened it silently. The creaking noise made her wince but one glance at Jerry told her he was still fast asleep, thankfully.
Once she was out she tip toed downstairs towards the main door. She put on her shoes and turned the doorknob but it didn't budge. Her heart sank and she realized she had been outplayed yet again. She had been watching him like a hawk these past few days but she never saw him lock it. How did he manage this?
She silently chuckled to herself as she leaned her head against the door. Of course he would always be one step ahead, again.
He must keep the key somewhere around here. She looked to the side for any hanging keys but there was nothing. She then tried the knob again and wondered if a card would work but the sound of metal clicking made her freeze in place.
"Going somewhere?" Jerry drawled from behind her.
With her heart hammering against her chest Samantha reluctantly turned around. What she didn't expect was to see a gun in his hand.
"You know I thought we came to a point where we trusted each other and I didn't have to tie you up," he said as he took a menacing step towards her.
She was at a loss for words as she stared at the gun in his hands. As he walked towards her she automatically backed up until her back was against the door.
He came up to her and pressed his body against hers. His one hand held her back pressing her against his chest, while the other planted the gun firmly against her left temple.
"I know you love me Samantha, deep down inside you know it too. That's why you keep trying to run away. You're scared to face you're feelings. But you need to accept this, there's no turning back now. I won't let you. We're in this together, you and I."
With the feeling of cool metal against her head, Samantha was trembling against him. Since when did he have a gun? A mad man and a gun was definitely not a good combination.
"They're going to find us Jerry. It's over," she mumbled against his chest.
"Shhh don't worry. We'll tell them you ran away to be with me, you're secret lover. As long as you're with me they can't hurt us. They cant separate us I'll never let that happen." He kissed her head sending shivers through out her body.
He sounded so delusional she didn't know what to say.
He traced the gun against her cheek and placed in beneath her chin, tilting her head up towards him.
"You need to promise me that you will never leave me, no matter what. Till death do us apart Samantha. One can't be without the other."
It was only until he said the last few words did she realize what he meant. He would rather kill her than let her go. She felt nauseated at the thought. She had to do something, there was no way she was going down without a fight.
"I promise,"she lied and then hesitantly she placed her mouth against his.
The distraction seemed to work because he kissed her back hungrily eager to devour what was left of her. She proceeded to kiss his neck and bit him gently on a sensitive spot she knew was his weakness. He moaned silently and allowed her to push him towards the couch.
He carelessly placed the gun on the coffee table next to them as she climbed on top and cradled him with her bare legs. She then took of his shirt and ran her hands across his torso making him roll his head back in pleasure. For a brief moment she actually wanted to make love to him, but then she snapped back to reality and kissed him while her hand reached over and grasped the handle of the handgun.
Once it was in her hands she leaned back and pointed it straight at his face.
"Don't move," she warned when he realized what was in her hands.
He didn't seem fazed or scared when he answered looking her straight in the eye.
"You won't do it. Deep down inside you love me, you just don't want to admit it,"he smirked confidently.
Her blood boiled at hearing this and she cocked the gun ready to fire. This time she saw panic in his eyes but it disappeared within seconds.
"Come one stop playing around Samantha. Give me the gun." He moved his hand but stopped when she shouted.
"Don't you dare move. You've tortured me enough, it's time for me to leave. It's time for me to be free and if you won't let me then I'll have to kill you first."
Unfazed he ran a hand across her thigh sending goosebumps across her skin.
"You won't kill me and you know it. If you wanted to you would've done it by--"
The sound of the gun clicking echoed through the air. In sheer panic Samantha pressed the trigger again and again but nothing came out. The gun was unloaded, he was testing her this whole time and she had failed.
"Yo-- you tried to kill me." he gasped in shock. He had become a pale shade of white as he sat up.
His face contorted between that of pure rage and insanity and she watched as his eyes darkened. She wanted to run away but instead she sat there paralyzed in fear.
O.o.o Samantha's in deep shit now but then again so is Jerry. Hope the police come in time or will they? hehehe
