Day 11

The dull humming of the small vent in the upper right corner of the room seemed to ricochet across the four walls providing Samantha the noise she needed to keep sane. It was either that or the mini radio her captor had bought her but somehow she preferred the repetitive sound the small fan produced as it rapidly turned in its small space.

The vent was the only thing that provided some sort of connection outside the confinements of the room she was kept in. Although it was impossibly small, the hole provided her the fresh air -or at least the illusion of it- that she needed to keep her going.

In the beginning, Samantha had tried screaming for help through the vent in hopes of someone hearing her but after many unsuccessful attempts and a mild sore throat her attempts had become less frequent.

Once, she managed to look through the vent by standing on a chair but all she saw beyond the rotating turbine was plain concrete. That was when Samantha had given up all hope. The man who put her here had thought of everything, he was constantly one step ahead and it was enough to deter her from thinking of ways to escape that place.

There was nothing to use, nothing sharp, nothing breakable. Samantha was trapped and the worst part was she was slowly beginning to accept it. It was only when she looked at the vent in the wall that she felt hope, but it was faint like a diminishing candle light.

Right now she was lying down on her bed, clicking her heels together repetitively as she impatiently waited. It was what she did these past few days as a routine. She was always waiting for him.

As much as she hated the thought of it, she had come to realize that she needed him. She needed the things he brought for her, his food and most of all his company. As crazy as it sounded because she absolutely loathed him, it was the bitter truth and Samantha hated herself for feeling this way but it wasn't exactly her fault.

Aside from his visits, she was alone all the time with nothing but a few books and a radio to keep her company and  of course her cursed thoughts. Her thoughts drove her mad sometimes. The million questions about what was going on outside, in her university, in her home town. How were her parents coping?

She quickly shut out the thoughts of her parents. They were enough to make her eyes watery and lips quiver and she was just so sick of crying. The sound of muffled footsteps outside made her jump up.

She was all jittery with excitement because he was taking her outside today. Finally, she would be able to breathe some fresh air and a change in scenery was what she desperately needed. The walk would do her some good as well, there wasn't much exercise she could do in such a small space and the lack of activity had made her lethargic and weak.

When he came in she noticed his reaction at seeing her. He looked at her in awe with his grey eyes wide open and mumbled the words "beautiful" more to himself than to her. Samantha had become used to his praises and admiring glances but today she felt uneasy, shy even.

Due to the rather special occasion she had opted for a green dress she had found in her closet. It was strapless but looked decent enough, although the way he was looking at her right now gave her second thoughts.

"Stop looking at me like that, you're making me uncomfortable," she snapped at him. "Shall we?" She nodded towards the ladder behind him.

"Oh, yes. Please come this way. I'm sorry I made you uncomfortable. It's just you look - you look just perfect today," he said shyly with his head bowed in shame.

Samantha didn't know why but his apology irritated her immensely. She found his shy, timid demeanour some what fake, masking a much darker side of his that she only caught glimpses of through his light grey eyes.

She ignored his response and walked towards him. The view of the ladder outside and the trapdoor made her heart flutter. As she was about to step outside he stepped right in front of her blocking her way. What the hell? She wanted to push him away but she resisted and glared at him instead.

"I need to take some precautions first. You understand that, don't you?" He said as he held a piece of cloth and a thick coil of rope in front of her.

She wanted to cry when she looked at them. "I don't need this. I wont try anything, I promise." She held her hands in front of her face in protest.

"I'll take it off upstairs, it's just the 'reaching there' part that I'm worried about. I'm sorry but we're not leaving until you comply to this." His voice was firm and he looked at her coldly completely unmoved by her pleading gaze.

"Fine." She grumbled as she turned around with her hands behind her back. "Anything to get out of here."

He tied her hands swiftly making her wonder if he was ever a boy scout and then he placed the piece of cloth into her mouth and tied it firmly around her head making her wince slightly. Thank god the cloth didn't smell but it was uncomfortable nonetheless.

After he'd checked and double checked her bondages, he held her arm firmly as he locked the room door and guided her up the ladder. His grip was tight and strong which made her wonder how strong he actually was despite his slender frame.

Once they were outside, Samantha realised she was in his basement. There was a musky odour that wafted through the air and the dark, unlit room was filled with unused furniture. It looked more like a junk yard than a basement.

He led her up another flight of stairs and she found herself in his living room. It was quaint, with minimum amount of furniture which was typical for a bachelor. It had all the essentials though; a couch, tele, wide windows with warm coloured curtains and a coffee table in the centre.

She also noticed a small leathered Ottoman in front of the couch and resisted the urge to sit on it. She had one just like it in her house and she used to sit on it while her mother braided her hair as they watched television together.

He gently tugged at her arm distracting her from her thoughts. "This way," he whispered, looking cautiously at the drawn curtains.

She couldn't help but smile at how neurotically paranoid he was. He led her up a flight of stairs to a wooden door which he opened extremely slowly in an attempt to be as silent as possible. Samantha didn't mind the wait, she was just happy to be outside in a wider space for once.

Once he lead her in and locked the door he exclaimed in excitement "Welcome to my humble abode, mademoiselle!" Her bowed awkwardly as he gestured towards the interior of his room.

She was slightly surprised when she looked around his room trying her best to avoid his bed. The room was huge with a large king sized bed in the middle coupled with a bed side table and a lamp, and a television fixed to the wall directly opposite to it. There was a small balcony on the far end of the room with a cute little white coffee table and complimentary chairs. The room also had a large walk in wardrobe with an attached bathroom. The floors were wooden panelled and the walls were a soothing shade of off white.

Another thing she noticed was that the room was impeccably clean and neat. Not a shirt lying around or any other object out of place. She wondered if he cleaned up the place just because she was coming. A glimpse of metal caught her eye and she turned towards the balcony again. It was then that she noticed he had padlocked the doors to the balcony. What did he expect her to do, jump off?

The temptation was definitely there though. Samantha knew she had a better chance of escaping here than she did in the room he kept her in but she just couldn't risk it. The chance of failure seemed too great and she didn't want to lose his trust completely then she'd never be able to come up here again.

He tugged her arm again as he walked towards the bed. "Do you like it?" He was pointing towards his bed as he stared at her with great big puppy dog eyes.

Samantha had tried her best to blur out the bed before this but now as she focused on it she felt a lump form in her throat. Her pulse quickened rapidly and she wanted to look away but she couldn't seem to tear her eyes away from it.

Splayed across the red bed sheets was an array of rose petals arranged in the shape of a heart and in the centre was a printed out picture of her. It seemed to float on top of the thick sea of petals. The roses disturbed her immensely but it was the picture that shocked her the most.

It showed her in the centre with her eyes squinted and slightly unfocused. It looked like she was waiting or looking for someone and she was dressed in a white crop top and black pants. The mixture of the dark background and blue LED lights told Samantha what she already knew.

The picture was taken the night she went to Indigo with her friends. It was the night Ben and her had kissed, and this man had watched everything

And then panic quickly settled in as she put everything together. The arrangement of the roses, his room, her picture, his bed, could only mean one thing. He was going to have his way with her tonight and all because she wanted a little freedom and some fresh air.

She had trouble breathing suddenly and all she could feel was her heart hammering hard against her ribcage. She looked at him in pure terror as she backed away until her back was against the wall.

He seemed to notice her panic and he walked towards her. "What's wrong? Don't you like it? Is the picture too much?"

How was she supposed to answer him with the stupid gag on? He touched her bare shoulder, his hands trailed her skin gently and she cringed in response but she was all tied up and completely defenceless. He seemed in a daze as he stared at her shoulders and then her collar bone, his eyes slowly moving lower. She wanted to kick him but she realised she was firmly tied up and even if she did manage to hurt him there wasn't much she could do after.

His grip tightened as he stared at the bare skin above the neckline of her dress and she froze. She just stood there and stared at him in fear, unable to speak and utterly helpless, expecting the worst.
