"Ever thought about what you would be doing if you hadn't joined med school?" Samantha asked in a drowsy voice as she stared up at the infinite splatter of blue colour that peaked at them through the branches of the huge oak tree they lay under.

Ben too had been staring absent mindedly at the peaceful view above them, lost in a train of empty thoughts. He briefly glanced at her noticing her gaze was somewhat withdrawn. He knew she had been having a rough time with postings but she never brought it up so he had decided not to either.

"Come to think of it, I've never really thought about it. Maybe a male supermodel. Heard they earn shit loads of money nowadays and don't you think I have what it takes?" Ben replied batting his eyelashes at her. "What do you think, Abercrombie worth?

She just rolled her eyes at him, a ghost of a smile tugging at her lips. "If you say so."

"Well since you asked, what about you?" Ben asked nudging her. He watched as her eyebrows bunched together in concentration, the way her eyes closed as she thought of an answer. Specks of sunlight fell across her face and hair making her look golden, the image was so breathtaking he just had to look away.

"You know what? I've been thinking about it a lot recently and I just can't think of an answer. I don't know what else I would ever want to be. For as long as I remember I've wanted to be a doctor, be like my uncle."

"Your uncle is an alien Sam. His IQ is higher than that of our whole faculty combined."

She chuckled but it came out half hearted. "It's unfair, isn't it?"

"The world is unfair, everyone knows that."

"Okay tell me honestly. Do you think I'll make it? I don't know what I'd do if I didn't," she whispered.

"You've made it this far, haven't you? You just need to keep pushing Sam. Enough with this mid-med-school crisis you've been having. Where's the feisty, determined nerd I met the first week here, huh?" Ben shook her playfully making her laugh in response. "Is she in there some where coz she needs to come back and kick this strangers ass."

He raised his leg aiming it towards her behind. " If she's not gonna do it then I will. Although it would be a shame to kick such a nice ass." He joked making her blush and punch him in return. His heart skipped a beat as he watched her cheeks turn a bright shade of pink, secretly feeling triumphant that he had caused that reaction.

Suddenly an image appeared in his peripheral vision. Ben realised someone was approaching and he turned his head only to see a livid Jessica marching towards them. He shot up in shock wincing as his neck cramped at the abrupt movement.

"You're such a fucking piece of work you know that, " she cried throwing an envelope at him. "Making me think that it was my fault we broke up when really it was yours the whole time. You and you're slut of a friend."

Samantha had sat up as well but she remained silent despite the insults thrown at her. She watched Ben as he quickly opened the letter and pulled out the pictures inside. His heart sank to his stomach when he realised what they had captured. Despite the dingy light, the two silhouettes kissing were as clear as day and there was no mistaking who they were.

Ben looked up at the seething Jessica. Her hair was matted and some had stuck to her cheeks where tears flowed freely from her red rimmed eyes. She looked like she had cried the whole night. He felt so guilty looking at her but the guilt was soon replaced by curiosity. How did she get this? Who would take pictures of them?

"What? How?" he stuttered completely bewildered.

"You tell me how. How you could make me believe that it was my fault because I made you choose? Obviously I had a valid reason too," she said pointing a shaking finger towards Samantha.

"I'm so sorry Jessica, it was my fault I swear. I was afraid of losing my friend and that made me stupid and selfish," Samantha suddenly spoke up but her voice came out small and weak as she held her hands up in surrender.

"So you kiss all your friends?" Jessica fired back looking like she was about to punch her.

Ben quickly stepped up blocking the two of them.

"Jessica I didn't tell you because by then we had broken up remember? I know I should have but you made me choose and after that it was over. I didn't think it would serve any purpose in telling you by then," he said as calmly as he could manage. He could never take it when a girl cried, especially if he had caused it. And lately that had been happening a lot.

"You don't think I deserved to know?" she asked, her voice hoarse and strained.

He felt like the biggest asshole on the planet as he watched her shaking uncontrollably in front of him. She looked so pitiful he instinctively reached out to her but she took a step back away from him, the hurt shown so clear in her light brown eyes.

"I'm so sorry, Jess. I'm sorry for cheating on you, for not telling you, for everything. I don't know what I can do to make up for it."

"She's just so twisted I-I can't stand it," she mumbled as she held her head in pain. "Who the hell makes out with someone's boyfriend and then sends them pictures about it. How can you be friends with someone like that?"

Utterly baffled now Ben glanced at Samantha who looked just as confused and then at the envelope. He then noticed something he hadn't before; a few words scribbled inside the envelope.

He will always be mine bitch. Stay away if you know what's good for you.

There was no mistaking the signature cursive 'a' and long loop under each 'y'. Even the slant of every letter was signature Samantha. But why would she do such a thing? How could she?

He lifted up the letter for Samantha to see and her face fell as she saw the message. He watched her eyes widened in shock and then she looked back up at him in surprise. He couldn't decide if she was really shocked or just acting.

"Who do you think did this?" she asked him ignoring Jessica's accusation.

Ben just looked at her incredulously. Did she not recognize her own hand writing or was she just playing dumb? His blood boiled when he came to the realisation that it had to be the latter. That was the only thing that made sense.

"You seriously don't recognize the hand writing?" he asked her coldly making her shift uncomfortably.

"No, I can't think of anyone who would do something like this," she challenged staring at him with equal ferocity as she stood up to face him. "I know I never would."

"It's your fucking handwriting Sam!" Ben snapped making Samantha jump slightly at his words. He usually never cursed when he talked to her unless he was extremely angry and right now he was seething. "Why would you do this to me? I thought you wanted us to start over?"

She looked like a deer caught in headlights, he couldn't decide if she genuinely didn't know or was just plain guilty.

"I swear I didn't do this Ben. You have to believe me. What could I have gained by doing so?"

"You clearly don't know her as well as you think you do, do you?" Jessica mocked bitterly. She had sunken to the ground and she looked like she was about to pass out at any moment.

"Let me take you back Jessica, you look sick," Ben said ignoring Samantha's pleading gaze.

"Don't touch me!" Jessica yelped when he helped her stand up. She shook weakly against him but didn't put up much resistance as he held her against him for support. He placed his arm around her shoulder to steady her and took a step towards the walkway in front of them completely ignoring Samantha who stood there gaping at him.

"Ben wait!" Samantha grabbed his shoulder stopping him. He stared at her angrily making her take a step back. "I never wrote that letter. Maybe she wrote it, maybe she did this to make us fight."

Next to me Jessica just stared at her incredulously. The fact that this was obviously Samantha's doing and that she was now trying to put the blame on Jessica just did it for him.

He tried to hold his calm but failed miserably. He stared at her icily as he spoke "I can't believe you just said that. You know what, I don't think I even know you any more. After everything that's happened, you're not the same person I fell in love with last year. Now you're just this bitter person who couldn't stand seeing me happy with someone else."

"Ben-," her voice broke as she stood there paralysed in shock.

"Before I say or do something I'll regret, please leave Samantha," he dismissed her with a wave of his hand and turned his back towards her. He could hear her sobbing incessantly and then the shuffling of feet as she ran away from him. His heart felt heavy with a mixture of guilt and anger but he ignored it hoping it would eventually go away.

But however much he justified his actions to himself in his head, he couldn't help that sinking feeling forming in the pit of his stomach that made him feel like he had done the wrong thing.
