7| A Deal I'd Rather Not make
I woke up to the bright, annoying, sun shining in my face. When I rolled over I expected to find Mason still next to me, but instead I found an empty space.
Looking around I saw a note on my nightstand, and I stretched my very tired limbs in attempt to grab it.
I said attempt because instead I ended up falling off my bed, and hitting my head on my nightstand leaving a bright red mark on my forehead. Ouch!
I rubbed my head and sat up moaning. Though I'm pretty sure it didn't help because my head was pounding. Stupid nightstand.
Finally I was able to grab Mason's note and read it. It read:
Pan,
My mother came over this morning to tell me we are going on a trip for a few days. She never told me where, but she said it was urgent that we leave immediately. Mothers are pretty crazy, but you have to listen to them or they will probably whack you with a broom until you do. I didn't want to wake you because you looked so cute sleeping even though you had very messy hair. I hope to see you again soon Pan. I don't think I will be gone too long.
-Mason
Well I guess it was nice of him to leave a note. I stood up and yawned several times before walking out of my room, dragging my extended wings along the floor.
I must have been very tired because I almost fell down the stairs. Thankfully I had my wings to brace myself for impact. Except then I crushed them. I really need to think things through better.
My dad was drinking coffee, my mother was slicing tomatoes, and Hunter was no where to be seen. Maybe he was still asleep. Or did Dad do something to him?
My eyes widened at the thought as I rushed into the kitchen where both my parents were. I swear if he hurt Hunter I would.. I would..I don't even know what I'd do, but it wouldn't be pretty.
"Wheres Hunter?" I asked trying to sound unsuspicious, but my dad looked at me sternly.
"He's on the roof I think. Why did you want to know?" My dad raised his eyebrow looking at me.
"I..umm... I'm supposed to be watching him! So I should always know where he is." Phew good save. It was hard to admit I was actually worried for him.
My dad nodded, and went back to drinking his coffee. I ran back up the stairs almost falling again. I am very clumsy.
Once I reached the top I sped to my room and hopped out the window. I found Hunter sitting on the edge looking down at something. Flying over to him, he turned around and slipped the object back in his pocket.
Before I could even sit down he jumped off the roof and walked off. Flabbergasted I stood hovering in the air with a few beats of my wings. The second I got out there he just left!
Flying towards him I caught up quickly. Though he sensed my presence he just kept walking. Kind of rude if you ask me. But maybe I was being rude. Was I intruding too much?
I landed next to him and stared at him to see if it would creep him out. After about 20 seconds of staring I had to blink otherwise my eyes would have dried out.
"Why don't you like me?" I asked out of the blue. I don't know why I said that.
"Cause you're weird," He said tilting his head towards me.
"You think I'm the weird one?! You're the one who is weird! You're a human. And at least we treat you nicely instead of your kind who was trying to dissect Mason!"
I crossed my arms and looked at him strangely. Pfft who is he calling me weird? But I guess having wings, to him, makes me weird.
"Well I think being a human is pretty normal since no one knows about your civilization. Well everyone except me that is." He smirked at his last sentence. Why was that funny?
For some reason I guess it made him feel like he had power over us. But it wouldn't be a lie. He still has the phone. Wait! The phone!
"Wait a minute! Give me the phone! I know you still have it!"
I wasn't going to waste anymore time talking and making friends. He was gonna give me the phone.
"Oh you mean this one?" he asked holding up a small phone.
I lunged for it quickly, but he dodged and moved before I could reach. I growled at him angrily, and tried to reach it again.
"Hunter, give it!" I yelled.
"Ah ah ah. If you want this you're gonna have to do something for me."
I groaned and tried lunging for the phone, but again he dodged. It was no use. I would have to do something for him, and if better not be dirty.
"Fine. What do you want?" I asked begrudgingly, eager to get rid of the picture of me.
"Well honestly I have no idea. I never thought you'd accept."
Did he think I would keep fighting him for it? I'm a little too lazy for that. Meanwhile, Hunter rubbed his finger against his chin pretending to think.
"For now you will simply be my ally, but I will think about your later use for me."
He wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me into the forest. He was acting really strange all of a sudden.
"Where are we going?" I asked already annoyed.
"I don't really know. I was hoping you'd have a good idea of something to do."
He pulled his arm back, and looked at me patiently, as I thought of something to do. Honestly, I didn't really want to hang out with him, but Mason wasn't here and Brianna was busy.
"Well we could ride bikes?"
"Motor bikes?"
"No just bikes," I said looking at him weirdly. "We live in the middle of the woods. Why would we have motor bikes?"
He shrugged and followed me back out of the forest. I rolled my eyes slowly. I ran to the large shed behind my house and pulled out my blue bike. Rummaging around some more I pulled out Mason's bike and handed it to Hunter.
"This is Masons isn't it?" I nodded, and put my leg over the bike allowing myself to sit down.
"Is he gonna get mad if I ride it?"
"Probably, but it doesn't really matter."
He gave the bike a long look before hopping on, and racing down the gravel path. I followed him and quickly passed him.
Looking towards me he scrunched his nose when he saw I was using my wings to make myself go faster. I only laughed, and pushed myself further ahead.
"Jesus Christ!"
What?
I quickly turned my head around to see Hunter on the ground clutching his ankle. I dropped my bike, and flew over to him to see what was wrong.
"What did you say?" I asked looking at his ankle.
"I said Jesu- OW." I had pulled his ankle closer to me trying to get a better look, but I guess I hurt him. Oops.
"Sorry," I said bending down further to look at his ankle.
It was red and slightly swollen, but it didn't look terribly bad.
"I think you just sprained it. You should be fine."
I allowed him to lean on my shoulder as I pushed him, and the bikes back home. Thankfully we didn't get very far, so it wouldn't take long to get back.
I put away the bikes, and brought Hunter inside. He was limping pretty bad, and he flinched every time he stepped.
Running to the bathroom I got the first aid kit, and brought it downstairs. Hunter was laying on the couch, and it looked like he was sleeping.
"Wake up!"
I slapped his face lightly. He opened his eyes, and glared at me. Oops.
"I wasn't sleeping," he said clearly annoyed.
"Oh. Well I brought a wrap."
Squatting on the floor I slowly wrapped it around his ankle and foot. He flinched a few times, but I pretended not to notice.
Once I had finished I put the first aid kit away and walked back downstairs to see how he was doing. Of course Hunter was still on the couch, but he was sitting up, and looking through our family photo album.
I was watching him quietly from the bottom of the stairs, as he flipped through the books several pages. He was smiling and laughing.
Eventually I became annoyed, so I ran over to see what he was laughing at. It was a picture of me covered in mud and dirt after I had fallen in a puddle. I looked about 4 years old, and my wings were only starting to change from the tan to a darker brown.
I pulled the book from his grasp, and closed it. Frowning, I placed it back on the shelf and looked out the window. It looked like rain. I guess that was the usual for fall.
"Well that was rather rude wasn't it?" Hunter asked drawing me from staring out the window.
"I..I just don't want you looking at our pictures. They aren't for human eyes, and besides you aren't our guest."
I turned back towards him and shuffled my wings, as if I was uncomfortable, but to tell you the truth I was comfortable.
"You seemed to think so when we were having fun earlier," Hunter said almost annoyed.
I sighed slowly and forced the tears back into my eyes. I was so worried of what he would do with the picture. I didn't even realize I was crying until my cheek became wet and Hunter's gaze softened.
"Why are you crying?"
I quickly wiped away my tears, and denied his statement.
I walked up the stairs not once looking back at Hunter, but I could hear him hobbling after me. I ran through my room and threw open the window. I jumped out, and open my wings immediately letting them catch the breeze and lift me into the air. With a few flaps I landed on the roof.
I highly doubted Hunter would be able to get on the roof with his hurt ankle. Then again that is him climbing up on the roof right now. Ugh.
"Pandora wait!"
I could barely hear his voice against the wind that was slowly picking up. He made his way over to me, and grabbed my arm before I could fly away.
His shirt was blowing in the wind and I could see his left side and part of his back, but there was something on them. Long lines. Scars.
"Are those..?" I pointed towards him, as he pushed his shirt down, and he looked embarrassed.
"Yes, they're scars."
"What are they from?" I asked looking into his eyes.
He drew his gaze away before answering, "whips."
