4| The Pull Of A Trigger

I was left dead tired after yesterday, and last nights sleep didn't really help. I woke up twice drenched in sweat. It took me at least 30 minutes to fall back asleep each time.

Wanna guess what I was having a nightmare about? If you were thinking of the picture going viral across the human world, and me ending up in a cage at a zoo surrounded by hundreds of oogling eyes, then you were correct.

It was only 7:02 now, and I was positive I wouldn't fall back asleep again, so I climbed out my window and sat on the roof. I did this quite frequently, and my parents didn't seem to mind at all. Having wings comes with its benefits.

Then again it also takes forever to get comfortable when trying to fall asleep, so I normally just wrap them around myself for extra warmth or I have to sleep on my stomach. Laying on your back and sides are extremely uncomfortable.

The sun was barely visible through the thick forests surrounding our territory. The fog from last night was still evident, and it looked like rain again.

I heard another window open and then soft footsteps. I thought it was my dad because he would come up early before patrolling the territory, but when I turned my head slightly I saw it wasn't him. I froze again, as I had yesterday.

Hunter was now standing on the roof, only inches away from me, and he was staring at my wings.

"Did you get a good look?" I asked scoffing. He looked up into my eyes, and when I expected to see the eyes of a ruthless teenager, I only saw the eyes of a broken one, and they were a brilliant green.

My expression softened, and I looked away. I half expected him to keep staring, while the other half expected him to sit down, but instead he jumped off the roof. I was shocked when he landed perfectly on his feet without even flinching.

He started to walk towards the woods where we were yesterday. I knew he was up to no good, so I did the easiest thing I could; I followed him. It was quite easy because I could fly faster than he could walk.

As he walked on he slowed and began shuffling around the leaves and grass. Was he looking for something?

"I know you're there," he said in a weird sing song voice.

He continued moving the leaves, as he bent down to get a better look. My breathing hitched when he spoke. How could he know I was here?

I can fly silent like an owl, at least most of the time I can. Though after yesterday my wings were probably sore and made more noise than usual.

Instead of standing there like in idiot, I decided I would speak up, and see what he was doing, considering it was probably something bad. I knew I shouldn't trust him.

"What are you looking for?"

I lifted myself into the air with a painful push, and slowed my wings downstrokes until I was touching the ground.

"None ya."

"Who's none ya?" I asked generally confused.

"None ya business."

A slow smile creeped onto my face, as I internally chuckled. Is this a human joke?

"Is that what you humans do? Wasting your time making corny jokes and comebacks?"

He smiled slowly, and slipped something into his pocket. I pretended not to notice, but I would get him for it later. Maybe I could be sneaky too?

"No actually we don't," He said getting up from the ground.

"Then what do you do?" I asked now interested. I'd never heard a lot about them. It was almost as if they were the myth instead of us. If we were a myth that is.

"Well-"

"Did you find what you were looking for?" I said interrupting him.

He tried to frown, but his eyes looked happy, at least for the moment at hand.

"No," he muttered, walking back the way he had came. I leaped after him eagerly like a lost puppy.

"So tell me more about the humans."

"There is nothing to tell," he said with sadness and anger imbedded in his tone.

"I bet there is a million things you could tell me, but you just don't want to," I said in a snark tone.

Turning around he looked me in the eyes, and I saw what I had before. Sadness, anger, fear, but most of all he was lonely. Well, then I would be his friend.

"Exactly," he said continuing to stare into my eyes.

"Huh?" I asked confused to what I had previously said.

"I don't want to, nor need to, tell you anything about the human world." I frowned as he spoke.

"But why not?" I asked continuing to follow him.

"I think we're lost," he said turning to me.

"I know the way," I smiled.

"Then show me," he said, not even bothering to look at me.

"Only if you tell me something about your world," I offered.

He glared at me, as I grinned. Maybe this time I would get some information.

"Why are you so interested in humans? Just please lead the way!"

I kept my smile on. He wasn't gonna win this one. I was determined to learn everything I could about the beings that lay beyond the forest.

"Not until you tell me something about the humans!" I said excited.

"Fine I will tell you about the humans. They are manipulative, cowardly, and only do what's best for themselves. We don't care who we hurt, as long as we get what we want!"

It looked as if he had ran into a wall of emotion, but he was trying so hard to keep it back, and all I could do was stand there staring at him after his outburst. What was wrong with him?

Instead of talking I just pointed in the direction of my house. He walked silently away, as I just stood there contemplating over his words.

Had I gone too far?

I just decided it would be better to give him space. He didn't need some random person he doesn't even know breathing on his neck the whole time.

It would be best if I just left him alone, and stopped wondering about the human world. I wasn't meant to be a part of it.

I walked towards our special tree, and flew up to my usual spot. Laying on the large branch I spread out my wings and looked towards the sky. It was blue as usual with a few clouds here and there.

I heard a few creaking sounds and suspected Hunter had lost his way again.

"Let me guess you need me to help you get home because you got yourself lost again?"

When I received no response I sat up and looked around. There was no one there. Not even a bird or a squirrel.

"Hmm I swore I heard someone," I said to myself.

Maybe I was going crazy. Maybe this whole ordeal had gotten to me. What I really needed was a nice nap. Laying back down, I rolled onto my stomach and I closed my eyes. I released a slow, much needed sigh. Just let yourself relax.

"Hi!"

My eyes flew open, and I almost fell off the branch when I saw Mason's face only inches from mine. He was holding onto a branch with each his arms, and using his wings to steady himself.

"Holy shit Mason! What was that for?!"

He only laughed, and leaned into kiss me. I couldn't resist, as he rested his lips upon my own. A warm feeling coursed through my body. Happiness?

Once he broke the kiss we both smiled and looked into each other's eyes.

"You don't know how long I've wanted to kiss you, Pan."

"You kissed me only yesterday," I laughed.

"I mean before that," he sighed. "I've always liked you."

I could only blush since he was pretty much blocking every exit possible. I kissed him softly again. I could feel him smiling against the kiss.

I didn't want it to end so soon, but it did when I heard the click of a camera, and pull of a trigger.

My eyes flew open and I could see Mason's shocked face. His expression changed to slight pain, but his eyes grew heavy and he was knocked out. He was slipping off the tree! I tried to pull him up, but he was resting on top of me causing me to fall with him.

As we fell through the air, I ended up under him making the impact twice as painful. I cried out in pain, as I tried to get him off of me. My wings, again, were crushed under his weight.
Conveniently placed there, I was unable to move.

"Mason get up! Why are you so freaking heavy?!" I yelled, trying to shove him.

I heard the trigger again, as I felt something pierce my thigh. The pain was only felt for a second before unimaginable drowsiness took over. My eyes were fluttering, and eventually I wasn't able to hold them open any longer.
