16| Finding A Cure Pt. 2

Pandora's POV

Restless is how I felt. So restless even though I am reduced to sleep. I couldn't feel my fingers, I couldn't feel my toes. I couldn't feel my tongue. I couldn't feel my nose. Here we go with the rhyming.

I don't know where I was, I still can't identify the plane of existence I'm on, but all I know is someone's here with me. I see it! I see someone in the distance!

I don't know if I'm running, but somehow I draw closer, but before I can catch a glimpse of who it may be, I'm back again. Back to that restless feeling. But this time I can hear something. Something rather than nothing.

Whispers perhaps? No, not whispers, they're pleas. Pleas for me to lay awake. But I am awake, right? If I'm not awake.. Then where am I?

Mason's POV

"So who wants to die first?"

Hunter looked at me as if I had a death wish. No, it wasn't a death wish, but merely a wish to return home. To save the person I loved the most.

Again, the tallest boy stepped forward exposing his muscular arms, and flexing them as if to intimidate us. Hunter tried to push me back, but I wouldn't let him. Instead, I punched the boy in the nose, sending him staggering backwards.

The other two stood amazed. Apparently they had never seen their fearless leader take a hit, such as the one I had just given. But because they stood motionless, it gave Hunter and I time to move from their reach.

I looked back as I ran. The two went inside while the other followed us. Pulling my jacket close Hunter bent down to pick up a rock. I didn't know if he was going to throw it at them, or use it for something else, but either way I watched closely.

Holding it in his palm he pulled his arm back, and threw it at the clinic window. I would have gasped If I had the time, but I didn't so I continued running, now in front of Hunter.

Behind me I could hear his heavy footsteps and the distant sound of an alarm. Did that happen when he threw the rock at the window? It must have because now several loud wails could be heard, and they were getting closer.

We ran into an alley way, and waited. Hunter had to explain to me why we were running and what the continuous sirens were. Finally the cars had driven passed us.

The only sound now I heard was the constant drips of water, and us trying to catch our breath.

"Did you know that would happen?" I asked breathing heavily.

"Yes," he muttered motioning for me to follow him out of the alley.

Looking both left, and right he remained tense. The sirens were now at a distance allowing us to leave unnoticed. A few people littered the streets giving us strange glances as we ran by.

We weren't going to waste anymore time walking because every extra second we waited Pandora took a step towards death. But I wouldn't let him have her.

After a long twenty minutes we found our way back to the town hall. The lady that drove us could be seen standing outside smoking something. Another human contraption I didn't understand.

"Hey, it's you two again!" She said waving. Hunter waved back while I just walked quietly behind.

"M'am if you don't mind could you drive us back to where you found us earlier?"

"Why would ya wanna go there?" She asked chuckling a bit. "Seems pretty desolate."

"Well my friend here feels a little better and he wants to give camping another go," Hunter replied eyeing me.

The lady seemed to take little notice of Hunters response when a car, much like the ones we'd seen earlier, drove up. It was a police car. I read the side.

Two men dragged a boy with a bloody nose out of the back seat, and put him in handcuffs. It was one of the boys from earlier and he was glaring at us, but a smile grew on his face.

"That's them! They're the ones that broke the window! They stole the medicine!"

The boy writhed in the mans grasp, and managed to point to us. I nudged Hunter quickly, hoping he'd be able to think of something, but he only stood there silently.

"You!" The one man said, charging over towards us.

"Shit," Hunter muttered before grabbing my arm and tugging. We both broke into a full sprint and didn't look back.

We ran, and we ran. The weight of the pack packs weighed us down a great deal, but we still continued to run. Not once did we stop, or even look back to see if the men were still following us. We only ran.

I could hear the sirens again, and every second they grew louder and louder. The forest must have been a hundred yards away. One hundred yards towards freedom.

The only problem was we were on a road. And where there's a road, there's cars, and where there's cars there are people. There was no chance of escape.

The trees were so clear. Their fall covered leaves were so evident I almost felt as if I could reach out and grab one, but we were still so far away.

The only thing that lie between us and the forest was the car charging towards us. And they weren't staying in the yellow lines like I thought they were supposed to. Humans are too complicated.

I realized It's sirens were blaring so loud I could no longer hear myself think. I could only hear the sound of my heart in my ears, which of course was obnoxiously loud.

The trees were only 20 yards away, 60 feet at best, but the cop car was only a few feet away and still driving.

Hunter pushed me in front of him, and tugged off my jacket, revealing my dark wings.

"You idiot!" I yelled.

"Mason go!" He yelled above the sirens. Ohhh no. He wasn't leaving me now. I wouldn't let him off that easy.

I threw my wings open, allowing my full wingspan to catch the wind, letting me hover. Grabbing Hunter's arms, I pulled him with me, jumping off the hood of the car and rising I'm the air.

We were so low that her could have walked on top if I let go of him, but I didn't. I pushed my wings harder, maximizing my downstrokes, and allowing myself to feel free once again.

By now I was in the forest flying. Flying faster, and faster, and–

"OOF!"

Looking below I saw Hunter gripping onto a small branch. We had crashed into a tree. I was so elated, the adrenaline rushing through me, I hadn't watched where I was going. At least we were away from the angry men and cars chasing us.

"Yikes sorry. I don't know what happened I was so free, and I just kept–"

Hunter quickly leapt down, and grabbed onto my legs causing me to fall down with him, my wings catching several sticks and leaves along the way.

"Ow my butt," I muttered rubbing my sore behind.

"Oh well you deserved it," Hunter said laughing.

"What do you mean I deserved it?! I just carried your sorry ass away from those.. Those barbaric Men!" I yelled. "If it weren't for me you would be wearing those.. those metal things and sitting in a jail cell!"

"Yeah yeah yeah, don't flatter yourself," Hunter replied standing up.

Grabbing his back pack he unzipped it to examine the syringes and bottles. A few were cracked, but most of them were intact. Zipping it back up he started walking away from me.

"You know we had a really rough day, so why not sleep on it?" I asked annoyed.

"I thought you wanted to get back to Pandora as soon as possible? Unless you rather me go?" He asked smirking.

I rolled my eyes and ran up quickly replying, "never."

Pandora's POV

The whispers I had come to enjoy were gone. They were replaced by a continuous beeping. I hear beeping now.

It was never at a constant rhythm. It would sometimes slow down. Sometimes it would speed up, but so far I have never heard it stop. What would happen if that beeping stopped?

Would it just stop and would that be the end of it? Did the beeping signify something? If the beeping stopped would I stop too?
