The Basics And Complexity [3]

15) Does every person with dissociation has alters?

The answer is NO. Dissociation is a symptom and part of multiple disorders (For example: Dissociation in Bipolar, Boderline Personality Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and many more).

Dissociation is on the spectrum. A person can have dissociation amnesia without having alters. A person can have dissociative fugue without having alters. A person can live only with dissociation.

Having dissociative identity identity is the severe case of dissociation and dissociative disorders.

Dissociation doesn't automatically mean that person has alters. Please correct anyone spreading this misinformation.

16) Can alters die?

No, alters can't die. They are all part of you. They are part of one body and one brain. They can be hidden, suddenly going silent, in a coma state (dormant), fused but alters are still there. Even when they are fused (a process where alters become one identity or person), they still remain.

17) Can alters get pregnant?

No, they can't. Alters may be in a relationship and have their private time but they can't get pregnant. Only your physical body can get pregnant like every other biological female.

A child alter, an infant alter or an alter based off their child may be created if someone had a miscarriage or lost their child due to an accident, murder, etc.

[Note: a child and an infant alter are types of alters. I'll explain the roles and types of alters in the upcoming chapters.]

18) Can you have a murderous alter in D.I.D?

People with D.I.D are most likely to hurt themselves and no. What you see in shows are for entertainment. Learn the difference between fiction vs real genuine D.I.D.

However, I do want to say an alter may be violent as self defence and protecting everyone. They may be aggressive if someones a threat, taking advantage of the body/person, physically and mentally causing distress to other alters etc.

I have certain alters that will take over my body (switch) and physically fight and face the abuse, fight, danger for me. (This is based off my experience. Not every person with this disorder will have these types of alters.)

When you're in danger, it triggers the fight or flight response. The same thing happens with alters and can trigger a switch.

19) Is D.I.D and demonic possession the same?

These two overlaps and significant for you to learn the difference between the two if you come from a religious background.

D.I.D is a dissociative disorder that has nothing to do with supernatural, paranormal, demonic entities etc. It FEELS like possession but it's not.

Someone sharing their D.I.D with you and calling them possessed is disrespectful and disgusting to say.

20) Do alters have different appearances?

It depends on what the child needs. It depends on your environmental conditions. Alter may have different appearances or may look similar or the same to you.

For my alters, most of them have distinct appearances and it causes a-lot of confusion, disorientation and body dysmorphia when looking at my reflection or it can happen anytime and anywhere.

21) Do people with BPD have alters?

Borderline Personality disorder is a PERSONALITY disorder. Their mind and brain is wired differently. How they function in this world impacts their thoughts and behaviours.

A person with BPD has ONE single identity. There may be someone using different names or acting differently but they're still one person. Making jokes like "wow it feels like you have multiple personalities" 🤪 trust me it's not and have them take accountability for their actions.

Someone having any disorder is an explanation and not an excuse for toxic behaviours so you better run if they don't take accountability.

22) I have a question. Can I ask?

Yes, you may. No one here is going to take offence.

That's all for today. I'll talk about the TikTok D.I.D community in the next chapter.
