In Light's Defeat

The camping season has not started yet as the adventurous Laura Greer drove herself to Blackwood Forest camping trip. After planning a month ahead for this event, she could not help but notice the weather changes for the past week.

"I'm telling you," her girlfriend Molly Grey starts off saying, "something feels off."

"Can you stop please," Laura pleadingly asked.

"Just come back in one piece," she said.

"Alright, I'll see what I can do to lose myself within the fog."

"Don't you joke about that," Molly complained in a dull yet serious tone.

"Call you back when the trip's over."

"Bye, camp safely."

As Laura hangs up the call, she sees a clearing to the entrance on her left. It took ten more minutes of a drive before reaching the camping site. She called in a few campers to help her get her stuff out of the van and on to the forest ground. With a twelve minute of a walk to and from her spot, more campers were eager to help so they don't have to make a second trip. Laura herself has to make another trip as she grabs her few belongings up front before locking the van.

Time has passed when all of the campers settled down and huddles by the campfire. Twilight is the very time, and Laura found herself fast asleep for the last two hours. The campers doesn't bother her at all. Twilight ended and every one of the campers went inside their tents as the fog picked itself up as it became more dense. The more it came toward their direction, the more silent it becomes. Several minutes has passed, and it suddenly became darker than most nights. Laura herself became half-awake. Waking up to an eerie silence and spine tingling chills made her cautiously sit up. Opening her tent, she finds none of the campers out by the still lit campfire.

Laura grabs her attire and flashlight-lit gloves before she investigates the tents. Putting on her heavy coat and gloves, the first two tents she goes to she finds nothing but flashlights. The next three tents she finds nothing but a few clothes, flashlights and liquor. The final tent she goes into is completely empty. Before she got out of the tent, she carefully listens to the footsteps made behind her. For a small, good, few seconds she heard the howling breeze from right to left. She wonders to herself that if the campfire has now died down. Some say she's not fond of places that feel off and eerie; Laura herself just doesn't do eerie places during nighttime. She then turned around, and at the same time saw a green, navy coat as same as hers running outside the tent.

"Was that my own," she quietly asked in confusion.

"Who's there," a little girl's singy voice called out.

A giggle was heard afterword, followed by a merry-go-round. Laura stands still, confused and frozen in place. She thought to herself why would a little girl be out here at a time like this by herself. She heard her giggles again, but this time it became fainter. Laura cautiously came out the tent. Laura became more confused as she steps outside and sees herself surrounded by pine trees.

"What the-" she exclaimed, wearing a concerned mask.

Laura turned around once more again. The tent she got out of has bow disappeared. What got her attention the most are the flickering streetlights at the very end. The lights keep on flickering. She remembers her own flashlights on her gloves. Somehow, it got turned off. Turning it back on, Laura heads toward the alluring streetlights instead of the dark path now behind her. She waves around her right hand around the right side as she did the same to her left making sure her surroundings are safe. The little girl is nowhere to be found, but her faint giggles can still be heard. As she comes closer to the flickering lights, her giggles slowly becomes a little more louder. The more she walks forward, the more louder and closer it becomes. She stops and stands still for a minute. Not knowing who she is, she slowly walk backwards back to the darkness. She lets out a heavy sigh, opens her eyes, and turned around once more.

She stands completely in place, frozen and paralyzed. What was behind her is now in front of her - total darkness. The flickering lights behind slowly fade away out of reality. The streetlights now became pine trees. Laura's eyes gave a dizzying vision, her mind reacting to it and made her head dizzy.

"You should of have not turned your back," the little girl sang once more.

As relieving as it is to Laura that she doesn't have to run, it is still scary to her that she can't move a muscle. Still wondering where the other campers are, Laura tries her best not to look straight as two, piercing, yellow eyes appeared.

"Don't worry,' the girl's voice eerie and delightful. "You'll be there in no time."

Laura opened her mouth and tries to ask her what she meant, but her voice seemed useless. No vocals came out, and that alone made things even worse. Laura tried to yell out as the little girl grabs a hold of her gloves. The darkness surrounding them is too pitch black. No more pine trees could be seen. Laura herself is still paralyzed as she thought to herself where the campers are once more. That's when she realized she doesn't have to speak anymore.

"I'm with you," Laura could hear a guy's thought in hers.

"Same here," a woman's thought came in as well.

"We can see you, Laura," the both of them simultaneously shouted out in our minds.

"But you can't see us," Laura heard the rest of the campers joining in, all sounding concerned and worried for her.

The little girl's giggles can be heard again. This time, the girl's giggles and laughter can be heard loud and crystal clear. Her footsteps also became clear and really close.

"No way," the guys' thought out loud.

"Laura," all of the campers' voice are all in her head, all sounding shocked.

"What," she asked them, worried.

The little girl gave an answer to her question as she comes closer to her view. Spotlights came from the streetlights as Laura widens her eyes in shock. Laura could feel no more as she looks at her younger self. Her piercing eyes flashes back at her as the campers remains in shock. Feeling like she's in defeat, imaginary chains lets her go as she hit the soft, wet grass.

"You're finally home," she said. "Now accept your fate and join your bretherns."

"Whatever it is, I won't do it." Laura coughed out the words.

"Too late," her younger self isn't hesitant to reply.

The place lit up as they found themselves in a black, circular room. Men in red robes around her age appeared at the opposite end of the room. The windows behind them all show the top of the thin trees. Still having no idea of where they are, Laura bravely stands up but fails to free her fellow campers.

"Don't worry about them no more," Laura heard herself cackle.

In the middle of where she used to be between the campers stood a mirror in replacement. Instead of seeing how she is right now, the mirror replaced Laura in a more dark, fitting outfit and aura. The reflection of her dark self projected that image onto her, and Laura immediately changed. Having to realize the power of shutting down the illusion, the place became no more as well as her younger, mirage self. In reality, a river separated her and her people from the campers. A new, long journey is ahead of her.

"Leave now while you can," Laura solemnly warned them, her head looking downward, "before I... unintentionally hurt you."
