As the Sun Sets
"I'm sorry for driving you all the way up here," he says to her apologetically.
Yamina Gummadi had been avoiding her ex-boyfriend Jalen Ramirez, but today she has done the opposite. Yamina is looking out the window from her side view of the whole town, deciding not to look at him. She puts her lips together and smacks it clear enough for him to hear. He looks towards her. Jalen then cannot take his eyes off of her especially with the sunlight surrounding her.
"You're a beauty, you know."
"I regret taking upon this decision," she confesses to him. "I regret breaking up with my boyfriend as well."
"Hey," he tries to ease her mind. "He may be everything you need, but he wasn't making you happy like I make you happy."
"Seriously," she chuckles at him. "You're gonna slide in there, like real smooth."
They both chuckle at the same time before Yamina decides to open her side door to get some fresh air. As she closes the door, Jalen gets out of the driver's seat and locks the door before walking to her side. She exhales a breath then coughs. He comes to her and embraces her, Yamina shivering with just a sweater and denim shorts. Yamina coughs again.
"You sure you're well, Yami," he asks her worriedly.
"Yeah, I'm fine. It's just a cough."
"It doesn't sound like it."
Yami coughs again; this time, she coughs away from him. Both facing away from the town view, Jalen embraces her once more with Yami weak. Jalen then worries. He feels her forehead with his left palm. Then, he feels her neck and throat. He hears Yami swallowing as she has a little bit of trouble doing so. Jalen turns her around to face him, his mask worrisome.
"Why didn't you tell me you were sick," he calmly asks her.
"Cause I wanted to see you," she responds with her head and voice low.
"Hey," he reaches for her chin, "look at me."
"I feel dizzy," she suddenly mumbles.
In an instant after saying so, Yami slowly falls forward to Jalen as he catches her in time. He doesn't stand up, however. He then chooses to sit down with Yami's head on his lap. He's glad that he isn't wearing his uniform yet, otherwise he would have gotten it dirty. He's only got an hour left before going to work, and he doesn't like the idea of spending the last moment now with Yami about to fall asleep on his lap. So, he carries her immediately.
Just as Jalen carries Yami toward the edge of the place, a car drives by and parks just a bit closer to his car. As he puts Yami down in a sitting position on the brick, he carefully grabs and holds onto her. The parked car then shows the driver, a security guard in his early 30s. He closes the door as well as the others and locks the car. He walks toward his comrade.
"I thought you're marrying her," he comments, "not make her sleep to death!"
"She's sick, Ivan," Jalen yells back. "I think she's got a fever!"
"So it's too late to make a Mexican baby with an Asian?" Ivan laughs it off.
Yami mumbles then coughs that makes all the men alert. Jalen practically still holds onto her as Yami wakes up. She gasps as to where she sees herself, but Jalen reassures her.
"I got you," he convinces her. "I got you."
Yami coughs yet again, but this time it becomes worse. Jalen lets her down from the brick wall with his left arm holding her from her back. Yami has her right arm around his neck, her left arm extending for her hand to interlock with her right hand and perform an arm lock around his neck. He notices she wants him to carry her, so he lifts her up bridal style. Yami then hums as she nuzzles her head on his left shoulder.
"Is she a cat or something," his comrade questions her actions.
"Acting like a cat is her thing Mitchell," Jalen tells him. "It's a silly thing of hers that I like."
"I'm right here, you know." Yami mumbles.
Jalen puts her down as he couldn't carry her no more. As he puts her down, Mitchell looks his way and winks at him. He then left the two alone and goes back to his car with the other two. Jalen waves them off and turns to face Yami.
"Where's your purse," he asks while eyeing her.
"In the car," she responds back with no smile on her face.
"Can you go get it?"
"Why can't you?"
"It's your purse, not mine."
Yami then walks to the passenger side of the car and grabs her purse out. She gives it to Jalen, but he declines.
"Open it and take out your gift."
"Why?"
"Just take it out and open it," he put on a nervous smile.
She walks near the hood and places the purse on top of it while taking out her gift. Jalen walks behind her, then Yami faces him again. She looks at him before she unwraps the small box. Taking out the silky ribbon, she nails in the paper and rips it. She puts the wrap paper in her purse, and then slowly opens the box. As she does so, Jalen goes down with his left leg on the ground and his right leg bent. After he positions himself, the box Yami opens reveals an engagement ring.
"Yamina Yvette Gummadi," Jalen starts off slowly then picks up the pace, "I have known you for two years. I've been waiting for the day when we would be up here up the 74, you overlooking the valley as beautiful as you."
The men from the other car start to wave their phones in the air with their flashlight on. Unnecessary, but that's how they are. Their phones somehow sing in unison, Yami and Jalen's favorite song playing in the background: Runner Runner's "I Can't Wait." This is where Yami starts to slowly tear up.
"You wouldn't know it yourself but," Jalen continues on, "you've always love me. No matter what the events nor how horrible it is, you always come to me. Your eyes tell it all. You love me."
"I'm your first love, aren't I," she asks even though she knows it herself. "You don't deserve me, I'll ruin it like any other. I wouldn't be good for you, and I know you want kids but I wouldn't be a good mother."
"One step at a time," he comforts her. "Right now, I just want to marry you. Will you marry me, my sweet princess?"
Yami looks down on the engagement ring. She would have to make a commitment. Tears start to overflow. Jalen doesn't know whether they're happy or sad, but Yami cries a river of happiness. She wants to say yes, but something is holding her back. She doesn't listen to it. Instead, she musters up an answer.
"Yes," she finally says. "It's a million times yes."
Her smile and her acceptance made him smile a thousand smiles. He jumps up and fist pumps the air in victory. He takes the engagement ring from the box and puts it on her ring finger. He then lifts her fingers up and kisses them. Then he goes for her soft, pink lips. The guys all cheer in unison, congratulating them and recording the event. Yami and Jalen doesn't care; the both of them kiss like there's no tomorrow.
"Hey," Mitchell yells. "If you don't mind, can we all go for the beach tomorrow for a full celebration of you two!?"
All of them surround their ears with full of laughter. All the while, Yami thought of the one beach she would always love to go to. Jalen could tell in her eyes that she's looking forward to it. Both her eyes and lips smile at that thought and at Jalen.
