Chapter 7: Jaune's Dilemma

The day had started with combat class, and the last matchup was Cardin Winchester against Jaune Arc. Cardin had the Executioner perched on his shoulder while Jaune was opposite him with Crocea Mors drawn.

He was leaning on his weapon, slightly exhausted, in the spotlight shining on the Beacon Academy  auditorium stage. He looks at Cardin, who laughs at his opponent's tiredness.

But Jaune gathers his strength to charge forward and swing his blade at Cardin, only for him to jump out of the way.

Jaune looks back, surprised, as The Executioner sends Jaune's shield, nd himself, flying back. Now only armed with his sword, Jaune continued to try and attack, but is blocked by the mace's hilt.

Their weapons were now locked, as Cardin forces himself up, towering over a struggling Jaune.

Cardin: This is the part where you lose

Jaune: Over my dead-! [Le Dies]

Everyone: :0

Blue: Damn!

[ E R R O R ]

Jaune: Over my dead-!

Jaune is cut short as Cardin knees him in the gut, making Jaune drop his sword and fall to the ground in pain. Cardin raises his mace and is about to slam it down on a worried Jaune just when the buzzer rings.

The lights come back on, and Glynda Goodwitch's voice causes him to stop.

Glynda: Cardin, that's enough!

But Cardin wasn't going to stop as the brute went ahead with his attack. So Blue, who was also there, intervenes and blocks it with his Power Pole, which he held with one hand.

He looks at Cardin with a frown, and didn't show any struggle whilst the big boy did.

Blue: That's enough, Cardin

Cardin: Tch, whatever.

He pulls his weapon back and walks away while Glynda comes onto the stage, tapping her tablet. Blue helps Jaune up from the ground and got his shield for him.

Jaune: Thanks

Blue: No problem

Glynda: Students, as you can see, Mr Arc's Aura has now dropped into the red. In a tournament-styled duel, this would indicate that Jaune is no longer fit for battle, and that the official may call the match.

While Jaune still lays on the floor in defeat, Pyrrha could be seen with a sad look. Blue puts his own weapons away before Glynda turns her head to look at the losing warrior.

Jaune pulls out a smaller tablet with his low, blinking stats and that of his entire team.

Glynda: Mr Arc, it's been weeks now. Please try to refer to your Scroll during combat. Gauging your Aura will help you decide when it's appropriate to attack, or when it is better to move to a more...defensive strategy. We wouldn't want you to be gobbled up by a Beowolf, now, would we?

Cardin: Speak for yourself...

Glynda looks over to the seated and standing students, such as: Yang punching the air in anticipation, Weiss shaking her fists with an excited smile, and Ruby shaking her entire body with enthusiastic energy while squealing softly.

Glynda: Remember, everyone, the Vytal Festival is only a few months away. It won't be long before students from the other kingdoms start arriving in Vale, so keep practicing. Those who choose to compete in the combat tournament will be representing all of Vale.

The bell rings, and students start leaving while Pyrrha continues to frown sadly. Jaune hangs his head in shame as everyone leaves for the cafeteria.

There, Blue was going to sit on his own, but found himself sitting with Teams RWBY and JNPR as Nora was ready to tell an unbelievable story to her audience...

Nora: So! There we were, in the middle of the night...

Ren: It was day.

Nora: We were surrounded by Ursai...

Nora turns to Blake who was paying no attention as she was currently lost in her book. Yang was hanging on her every word with her hands cupping her face.

Ren: They were Beowolves.

Nora: Dozens of them!

She screams this as she stands at the table of both Team RWBY and JNPR, where Weiss is ignoring Nora and filing her nails, Ruby, Blue and Pyrrha were listening politely, and Jaune was messing with his food.

Ren: Two of 'em.

Nora: But they were no match....and in the end, Ren and I took them down and made a boatload of Lien selling Ursa skin rugs!

Ren: [Sighs] She's been having this recurring dream for nearly a month now.

Blue: Damn, that's surprising. I never get those.

Yang: Hey Blue?

Blue: Yezza?

Yang: Can you tell us more about your weapon?

Blue: The Powerpole? Well it's nothing special, it's just a sturdy staff that I use

Ruby: Is there no cool switch?

Blue: Nope

Weiss: Any dust implements?

Blue: Nadda

Ren: Just a regular weapon?

Blue: Yes sirrrrr!

Blake: What about your semblance?

Blue: You want to know about my semblance?

Blake: Is that a bad thing?

Blue: Maybe, why would I share it if I plan to take over the world and slaughter everyone in this room?

Ruby: W-W-What?!

Pyrrha: Is....that true?

Blue:.....Nah, I'm just bantering and that!

Yang: Phew!

Nora: I thought you were serious!

Weiss: You better not go behind us like that!

Blue: Don't worry, I will never resort to that. I'm the Peacekeeper after all, but I guess I can explain what my semblance is. It's called Time Manipulation

Blake: Time Manipulation?

Ruby: That sounds so cool! What happens whe you use it?!

Blue: I am able to slow down time for 10 seconds, but I can't completely stop it.

Ruby: Whaaaaaaaat?! That's so cool! I said that twice now!

Nora: And broken!

Yang: So if you were to use it in battle, does that mean we will notice when you use it?

Blue: Nope, in my vision, you would be slowed down. But everyone else would be moving at normal speeds, like I'm blinking ahead in a way.

Weiss: So we won't realise that you're using it?

Blue: Nope, you would attack me, but then find out that I'm behind you after hitting you three times

Ren: That's....scary

Blue: Indeed, I can control how slow time will move. I can make it slightly slow, or really slow, but I can't stop it completely

Ruby: You're amazing Blue!

Blue: Hehe, I mean....not really

Pyrrha: Jaune? Are you okay?

Jaune: Huh? Oh, yeah! Why?

Ruby: It's just that you seem a little...not okay...

Jaune: Guys, I'm fine. Seriously! Look!

He holds up a thumb while laughing nervously, no one was really convinced, especially Blue who knew students like Jaune, where they weren't okay but tried to act like they were.

Blue's attention is then focused on the members of Team CRDL, standing around a girl with brown rabbit ears jutting from her hair as Cardin laughs at her.

Sky Lark holds up his hands to his head in a mock interpretation of her unusual features.

Pyrrha: Jaune, Cardin's been picking on you since the first week of school!

Jaune: Who? Cardin Winchester? Nah....he just likes to mess around! You know, practical jokes!

Blue: Yeah I'm going to have to call cap on that

Ruby: He's a bully

Jaune: Oh, please! Name one time he's 'bullied' me.

Cue the flashbacks as Jaune is seen on the way to class, with Cardin going the other way down the hall. When the two pass, Cardin knocks his arm into Jaune and makes him drop his book, then continuing on his way with his hands out as if daring anyone to challenge him.

Jaune: Ah, come on!

Another incident with the two showed them about to pass through a doorway. But Cardin clicks on Jaune's sheath and extends it into its shield form as he's going out, causing him to run into his own defense and have it block the exit.

Jaune grunts in frustration as he tries to lift his shield back out.

Jaune: Come on...!

Finally, Glynda was in the locker room with several students, gesturing at the devices.

Glynda: Each of you will be assigned one rocket-propelled locker to store your weapons and extra armor. Additionally, your locker can be sent to a custom location based on a six-digit code.

Hearing this, Cardin looks at Jaune  standing between him and the only open locker in the room. Cardin quickly pushes a shocked Jaune into the small dark space and closes the door on him, pressing random buttons on the pad right after that.

Jaune: What?! No, wait, wait! You've gotta get me out of here! Please! Don't! Don't! Don't do it!

It's too late to protest when the locker scrunches down and launches up with a burst of blue fire coming from its base. Cardin watches as the locker slowly soars across the sky.

Jaune: Ahhh, coooome oooooooon...!

Back in the present day, the others are totally focused on Jaune now as he tries to laugh it all off.

Jaune: I didn't land far from the school!

Pyrrha: Jaune, you know if you ever need help, you can just ask.

Nora: Ooooh!

Nora gets up from the table and presents her diabolical plan with a not-entirely-sane grin.

Nora: We'll break his legs!

Blue: I.....sort of agree with her

Nora: Really?! Let's go!

Jaune: Guys, really, it's fine! Besides, it's not like he's only a jerk to me, he's a jerk to everyone.

They all look over as the laughing grows louder, mixed in with cries of pain from the rabbit girl when one of her ears are tugged on by Cardin.

Velvet: Ow! That hurts! Please, stop...

Cardin: I told you it was real!

Russel: What a freak!

Blue: Okay, time to do my job

Ruby: Blue?

Weiss: Where are you going?

Blue: I wanted to see if Cardin would stop and realise what he is doing, but it looks like I have to force it through his head.

Nora: Oh! Are you going to punish him?!

Blue: Not punish, more like....warn. I'm assuming there is no objections?

Ren: Nope

Nora: Break his legs!

Blue: Not today

Nora: Awww...

Pyrrha: He is atrocious. I can't stand people like him.

Blake: He's not the only one...

Yang: It must be hard to be a Faunus.

Blue: Well it's about to be hard being Cardin Winchester

Blue was up and approaches Cardin from behind, the big bully wasn't aware of the looming and menacing aura from over his shoulder, but his teammates did.

Sky: Umm....Cardin?

Cardin turns around to see Blue behind him, Cardin wasn't intimidated by Blue as he didn't think the Peacekeeper was anyone special.

Cardin: Oh, it's you. What do you want?

Blue: I want you to let go of Miss Velvet's ears....please?

Cardin: Hah, no! This is too much fun!

Blue: So we're going to have a problem, right?

Cardin: I don't know, do you want one?

Blue: Let go and we won't

Cardin: What if I do this instead?

Cardin was about to pull on Velvet's ear again, but Blue uses his semblance to slow time. He moves Velvet to his side before Cardin could grab it.

Then, Blue had a bright idea in his head, he wanted to add something extra and opened Cardin's hand, then he directs it towards Russel. He had about four seconds left so he stopped using his semblance and watches the chaos unfold.

Russel is slapped and knocked to the ground, Cardin was surprised as he looks around for Velvet. He turns around to face  Blue who had the bunny Faunus at his side, with his arm around her.

Blue: Are you okay, Velvet?

Velvet: [Blushes] Y-Yes, thank you, Blue

Cardin: What the? How did you do that?!

Blue: I'm just that good, no?

Cardin growls and tries to throw a punch at Blue. He could've easily slowed time again, but he didn't want to waste more of his energy on Cardin.

While he can slow down time in consecutive bursts, he can only do it three times a day, maybe four as a stretch.

His semblance is very draining, so instead he catches Cardin's hand, twists his wrist and pushes him away. Cardin falls to the floor this time, gets up and decides to flee with his team.

After that, Blue lets go of Velvet and pats her on the head, something he always did to her which she enjoyed.

Blue: Well, that's sorted out. If this happens again, you can come to me or Coco

Velvet: I will, t-thank you Blue!

Blue: Anytime, Velvet

Velvet smiles at Blue before grabbing her things and leaving to find her team. Blue walks back to the others as they were amazed at his display.

Ruby: Did you use your semblance?!

Blue: I did

Weiss: That was great from you

Yang: Yeah! You showed that idiot what he deserves!

Nora: I still think you should've broken his legs

Ren: Nora

Nora: Okay, maybe not

Pyrrha: You really are a Peacekeeper

Jaune: I've never seen Cardin that scared before

Blake: Thank you, Blue

Blue: It's my job to stop all of that, I've been doing this for....three years now? That's when I was the Peacekeeper for the first time.

It was now time for the next class, and a uniformed, sleeping Jaune has his head resting in his hands while a constantly zooming and fast talking Professor by the name of Bartholomew Oobleck is in the middle of his hyperactive lecture.

But he prefers himself to be Dr Oobleck instead, that brother has a PHD after all. Blue was also present as he wanted to attend these lessons so that he can listen to what the Professors were teaching.

Oobleck was educating Weiss, Blake, Pyrrha, Velvet, and a leaned back Cardin who was directly behind Jaune.

Oobleck: Yes! Yes, prior to the Faunus Rights Revolution, more popularly known as the Faunus War

Oobleck zooms up to the front of the class, something Blue is forever confused about. He is convinced at this point that Oobleck would be able to move perfectly fine when he uses his semblance.

Oobleck: Humankind was quite, quite adamant about centralizing Faunus population in Menagerie.

He points at the map of said-area with his stick, then zooms off to the side for a sip of his coffee before appearing in front of the desk.

Oobleck: Now! While this must feel like ancient history to many of you, it is imperative to remember that these are relatively recent events! Why, the repercussions of the uprising can still be seen to this day!

He zooms around the classroom more, sipping his coffee again before continuing to zoom and talk.

Oobleck: Now! Have any among you been subjugated or discriminated because of your Faunus heritage?

Some of the silhouetted students raise their hands, Velvet, after a moment, does the same, and Blue frowns at this. He realises that he needs to do something about this, and the first one to deal with was Cardin.

He had an idea, but he needed to wait until the right moment.

Oobleck: Dreadful, simply dreadful! Remember, students, it is precisely this kind of ignorance that breeds violence! I mean, I mean, I mean just look at what happened to White Fang! Now, which one of you young scholars can tell me what many theorize to be the turning point in the third year of the War? Yes?

Weiss: The battle at Fort Castle!

Blue: Suspicious Name

Oobleck: Precisely! And, who can tell me the advantage the Faunus had over General Lagune's forces?

Unseen by the professor, Cardin flicks a paper football at Jaune's head, causing him to wake up.

Jaune: Hey!

Oobleck: Mr Arc! Finally contributing to class! This is excellent! Excellent! What is the answer?

Jaune: Uhhhh....the answer....the advantage....that the Faunus....

Jaune looks behind Oobleck's focused face at Pyrrha, who coughs and motions to her lips as she gives him the answer.

Jaune:...Had over that guy's stuff...

He sees Pyrrha cup her hands around her eyes and goes for the most obvious answer. At least that's what she thinks, because Blue knew what Jaune was going to think of.

Jaune: Uhh....binoculars!

While Jaune looks pleased with his answer, the class laughs at him as Oobleck sips his coffee. Pyrrha sighs and slaps a hand to her forehead as Cardin pounds his fist on his desk while chortling.

Blue: Should've pointed to your eyes.....

Oobleck: Very funny, Mr Arc! Cardin! Perhaps you would care to share your thoughts on the subject!

Cardin: Well, I know it's a lot easier to train an animal than a soldier.

Pyrrha: You're not the most open-minded of individuals, are you, Cardin?

Cardin: What? You got a problem?

Pyrrha: No, I have the answer! It's night vision. Many Faunus are known to have nearly-perfect sight in the dark.

Cardin growls at the correct response, and had bad intentions in his head. He looks to the side and saw Blue looking over at him with eyes that said "Don't try anything". Cardin reluctantly listens while Blake gave her insight on the subject.

Blake: General Lagune was inexperienced, and made the mistake of trying to ambush the Faunus in their sleep. His massive army was outmatched, and the general was captured. Perhaps if he'd paid attention in class, he wouldn't have been remembered as such a failure.

Blake directed that last point towards Cardin, and he was enraged, getting up from his seat, fist clenched. Blue suddenly appeared besides Cardin with his hand on his shoulder, preventing him from moving.

Cardin glares up at Blue but the Peacekeeper returns with a bone chilling frown that made Cardin debate whether he should even continue.

Oobleck: Mr Winchester! Please take your seat! Thank you Blue for that

Blue: No problem Doktor

Oobleck: It's Doctor, not Doktor

Blake: Blue got there so quick, he must've used his semblance then. He would be great at stealth missions.

Blue: Okay, I said I wasn't going to use it again. But I couldn't help myself there.

Jaune begins to laugh at his tormentor's embarrassment, but then finds Oobleck zooming up to him.

Oobleck: You and Mr Arc can both see me after class for additional readings.

Jaune: Oohhhh...

Oobleck: Now! Moving on!

When the lesson ends, Pyrrha, Nora, and Ren come out of the classroom, only for Pyrrha to stop near the doorway.

Pyrrha: You go on ahead. I'll wait for Jaune.

They look back inside as the after-class talk occurs to the two boys while Blue watches.

Oobleck: You two have been struggling in my class since day one! Now, I don't know if it's a lack of interest, or just your stubborn nature, but whatever it is....It stops now! You've worked hard to gain entrance to this school, and we only accept the best of the best, so I expect you to act like it.

Cardin: Yeah but why do you let him! [Points To Blue] Do all of that! He has so much freedom!

Oobleck: That's because Mr Light isn't a student! He is the Peacekeeper of Beacon as Professor Ozpin refers to him as such. His role is to prevent any conflict or mischievous behaviour to occur. Such as when you tried to confront Ms Belladonna for her factual speech.

Cardin: But-!

Oobleck: You say anything or do anything that's out of line, then Mr Light will intervene. History is important, gentlemen! If you can't learn from it....you're destined to repeat it. Pages fifty-one to ninety-one! I want an essay on my desk by next class! Now! Run along.

With that, he zooms out of the classroom and past a waiting Pyrrha in a green and white blur. Jaune comes out first, and Cardin emerges behind him, pushing him to the ground an emitting an "Ow!" from him that makes the bully laugh before walking away.

Pyrrha and Blue pull Jaune back on his feet as the Former expresses her concern.

Pyrrha: You know, I really will break his legs.

Blue: Don't tell Nora, she will get involved and do something horrific. I'll see you two later.

Blue leaves Jaune and Pyrrha to do his patrols around Beacon, one part of his job as Peacekeeper. Jaune sighs, and Pyrrha looks like she is struck by inspiration.

Pyrrha: I have an idea! Here, come with me!

She grabs a confused Jaune by the arm and drags him along as she turns down the corridor. A dejected Jaune and confident Pyrrha arrive on top of a rooftop of one of the buildings, with a clear view of the glowing green orbs in the central tower of Beacon.

Jaune: Pyrrha, I know I'm going through a hard time right now, but I'm not that depressed.

He looks over the edge of the roof, to the confusion of Pyrrha.

Jaune: I can always be a farmer or something...

Pyrrha: N-N-No! That's not why I brought you up here!

Pyrrha drags Jaune away from the edge, as they talk with each other, Cardin could be seen leaning his windowsill right below them.

Pyrrha: Jaune, I know you're having a difficult time in class and that you're still not the strongest of fighters, so....I want to help you!

Jaune: Wh-what?

Pyrrha: We can train up here after class where no one can bother us!

Jaune: You think I need help?

Pyrrha: N-No! No, that's not what I meant.

Jaune: But you just said it.

Pyrrha: Jaune, everybody needs a little push from time to time. It doesn't make you any different from the rest of us. You made it to Beacon! That speaks volumes of what you're capable of!

Jaune: You're wrong. I-I don't belong here.

Pyrrha: That's a terrible thing to say! Of course you do!

Jaune: No, I don't! [Sighs] I wasn't really accepted into Beacon...

Jaune turns his back to her so he doesn't have to face her.

Pyrrha: Wh-What do you mean?

Jaune: I mean I didn't go to combat school, I didn't pass any tests. I didn't earn my spot at this Academy! [Looks At Pyrrha] I lied! I got my hands on some fake transcripts, and I lied!

Pyrrha: What? But...why?

Jaune: Cause this is always what I've wanted to be! My Father, my Grandfather, and his Father before him were all warriors! They were all heroes! I wanted to be one, too. I was just never good enough.

Pyrrha: Then let me help you!

Pyrrha goes over to Jaune and places her hand on Jaune's shoulder, but then he uddenly turns on her with mad frustration.

Jaune: I don't want help! I don't want to be the damsel in distress! I want to be the hero!

Pyrrha: Jaune, I-

Jaune: I'm tired of being the lovable idiot, stuck in the tree while his friends fight for their lives! Don't you understand? If I can't do this on my own....then what good am I?

Pyrrha attempts to reach out for his arm and console him, but he leans back from her touch.

Jaune: Just....leave me alone. Okay?

Pyrrha:...If that's what you think is best...

She walks away, her footsteps getting softer and softer until she leaves the roof. Jaune paces a little until he hears a mocking laugh and Cardin appears on the roof from his window.

Cardin: Oh, Jaune...

Jaune: Cardin!

Cardin: I couldn't help but overhear you two from my dorm room. So, you snuck into Beacon, huh? I gotta say, Jaune, I never expected you to be such a rebel!

Jaune: Please, Cardin, please, don't tell anyone!

Cardin: Jaune, come on! I'd never rat on a friend like that!

Jaune: A....A friend?

Cardin: Of course!

Cardin traps Jaune in a headlock under his arm despite his struggling.

Cardin: We're friends now, Jauney boy! And the way I see it, as long as you're there for me when I need you, we'll be friends for a long time.

He finally releases Jaune, who gasps as he leans on the ground.

Cardin: That being said, I really don't have time to do those extra readings Dr. Oobleck gave us today. Think you could take care of that for me, buddy?

Cardin leans down to rub Jaune's hair and gets up with a grin.

Cardin: That's what I thought. Don't worry, Jaune, your secret's safe with me.

Cardin drops back down to his room as Jaune rubs his neck in pain and worry. Someone who was listening from a blindspot outside, was Blue Light, as he heard everything.

Blue: So he faked his transcripts? That's interesting because Ozpin would've definitely known if it was fake...so why let him stay?
