The Arrival

The royal party was stuck in the rain. Princess Henrietta's parents believed that she was on her way to the royal ball in the kingdom of Davina. Henrietta didn't want to marry some pompous prince, she wanted to be a knight and thus had no intention of going to the ball. Yet the road washed out due to the hard rain and she found herself at the door of the castle.

"I'm Prince Frederick and this is my sister Princess Henrietta." Her brother said when they were introduced to the royal family of Davina. All four members of the household were in the throne room waiting to welcome Henrietta and her brother.

"We were on our way to tonight's ball, but our driver got turned about and lost." He lied. "Then we got stuck in the rain."

"You poor dears." The queen clucked. "Let's get you into dry clothes." She leaped up from her throne ready to take care of Henrietta and her brother.

"I have a question." Princess Lacey said before her mother walked halfway across the dais. The princess was dressed in a simple blue gown denoting the late hour of the meeting.

"Princess Henrietta, what color are your eyes?" Lacey asked.

"Green. Why?" Henrietta answered confused by the princess's peculiar question.

"Would you call your hair a strawberry blonde?" Prince Devon sat up straighter and his face pinched at his sister's question.

"Yes," Henrietta answered.

The queen must have caught on to whatever the princess was doing for she joined in the questioning. "How much do you weigh?"

"That is a rather rude question," Henrietta said.

"She's 119 pounds." Frederick supplied.

"That is personal." She whispered to her brother underneath her breath.

"We need their help just answer the questions," Frederick whispered back.

"Young lady, an evil wizard locks a maiden in a high tower and casts a spell which prohibits any man from entering the door. What is your advice to save her?" The King who had remained silent to that point asked.

"I would send a woman." Henrietta held her head high with the answer.

"That answer is not too smart." The King declared.

"I beg your pardon." Henrietta protested. She thought the answer was downright clever and entirely possible if she could fulfill her lifelong mission of becoming a knight.

"The answer is not stupid either!" The princess defended.

"I would say it is the perfect answer!" The queen said excitedly but Henrietta noticed that the prince didn't share his mother's sentiment. His face started turning an unusual shade of green.

"Perhaps we should discuss it in private." Princess Lacey said calling on some footmen to take Princess Henrietta and Prince Frederick out of the throne room and to finally get some dry clothes.

Lacey turned to Devon. "She passed all of the tests." She said accusingly.

"Yes." King Samuel agreed. "I think the marriage arrangements should be made."

"She didn't pass all of the tests." Devon insisted.

"Her eyes and hair are the right color, she is the right weight and she gave an acceptable answer to the question. She passed all of the tests." The queen argued taking her place back on her throne.

"She didn't pass the pea test," Devon said desperately.

"The pee test?" Lacey asked appalled.

"The princess must sleep on the most comfortable mattress in the entire kingdom. A single pea is placed underneath the mattress. If she can feel that pea through the mattress I will marry her." The prince said.

"Oh, you said pea. You don't want to know what I thought this test was about." Lacey said.

"It is an impossible test." The king protested.

"I won't marry her unless she passes." Devon insisted.

Even though the rest of the family was against the idea they all conceded. After all, it was Devon's right to test his bride to see if she were suitable for marriage.

Lacey crossed her arms over her chest as her mother gave the strange instructions on how to prepare the rooms of the new arrivals. As her mother spoke Lacey formulated the plan to ensure that her brother would be engaged come morning.
