When I got home, I was surprised to see a bunch of police cars parked in front of our mansion. I parked my car and immediately got out.
"Mom. What's going on?" I asked when I entered the mansion. Sinalubong ako ni mama.
My brows furrowed when I saw the police officers in our backyard.
"Oh, I don't know about your Dad, Fey. Baka may nireport lang sila sa kanya," Mom said
They reported something this late at night?
I immediately hid behind the wall when I caught my Dad talking to one of the police. Pasimple akong sumilip at pinakinggan ang usapan nila. I couldn't see their faces clearly because it's already dark.
"Nagawa niyo na ba yung inuutos ko? Nai-drop yung kaso?"
"Opo. Wala na kayong dapat alalahanin governor."
"Hmm. Mabuti. Sige, makakaalis na kayo."
I saw my father handed a brown envelop to the police. He bowed his head a bit and received the envelop from him.
"Salamat po. Magandang gabi po ulit," paalam niya at tuluyang umalis sa harapan ni papa
He suddenly turned to my direction so I quickly hid again.
"What's going on dad?" I asked calmly
He startled then lookied at me. "Oh. Fey. Andito ka na pala. Kadadating mo lang?"
I nodded and crossed my arm over my chest. "Why is there a police here dad? Anong meron?"
He loosened his tie and looked away. "The police? Nothing. They just reported something to me. It's not a big deal. Don't worry."
I squinted my eyes. "I see."
He gave me a small smile. "I'll be at my office if you need something."
I watch him as he make his way upstairs.
I couldn't help but to think the reason why they were here a while ago. Why did they talked to Dad? I was curious of their conversation.
All of a sudden, the incident earlier flashed on my mind. I felt like I almost died that moment. Nagpapasalamat nalang ako na buhay pa ko. Naka-uwi ako sa bahay ng buo. I can vividly remember his words. Why do I feel like he has something to do with this? I couldn't connect the dots.
I sighed and massaged my temple.
Maybe I'm just tired.
So, I went upstairs to my room to rest.
I heard my phone beeped.
I saw Lou's message popped up on the screen.
Lou:
You free next week?
I checked the time and it's already 3am in the morning. Fuck Insomnia.
I typed in my reply.
Ako:
Can't. Sorry.
After a few minutes, she replied.
Lou:
Wow. Thanks for replying after five hours.
I nearly died. I wanted to say that to her but I don't want to prolong our conversation. I should be sleeping at this hour.
Siya:
By the way, have you heard the news about Jac?
Ako:
No. What is it?
Siya:
She's on rehab.
Hindi agad ako nakasagot. Nakatitig lang ako sa mensahe niya.
Ako:
Really? That's uh...I mean good for her. Hope she'll recover soon.
I bit my lip as I recall our last meeting. A week has passed since I last saw her and I have no news after that.
Hindi na siya nagreply pa. I then stumbled upon this news article on my phone. It got the latest news updated here. My brows furrowed when I read the headline.
Isang matandang babae patay matapos ma hit-and-run.
It was posted two days ago. I was curious so I clicked on the article.
I read the whole article thoroughly. At the end of the long article, there was a video.
I turned the volume on and rewatched it. I scrolled back up to read the update. The culprit who committed the hit and run was still unknown.
I returned to the video and there's still a few minutes remaining I played it and saw that the relative of the victim was being interviewed. I squinted my eyes upon recognizing a familiar face.
At first he was wearing a mask but he removed it before speaking.
He sound like he's about to cry any moment while talking. He still looks young, maybe he's early twenties? He looked away and wiped his tears. Then the video transitioned back to the cctv footage of the incident at that's where the video ended.
I took a closer look at the guy who got interviewed and my eyes widened when I finally recognized him. He was the guy whom I encountered a few hours ago! Could it be the same guy who's been following me these past two days?
I tried my best to remember his face. He was wearing the exact same mask.
What the hell is happening? Am I just imagining things?
But I swore. I swore he's the same guy.
My heart began to raise inside my chest. I went downstairs and drank a glass of water to calm myself down.
Why did he mention my father?
What does dad has to do with all of these?
May kasalanan ba siyang ginawa? Is he the one driving the car?
No way. There's no way he could...
What the hell am I thinking?
I shook my head and sighed in frustration. "Mali. Mali yang iniisip mo."
I should stop jumping into conclusions without any evidence. Maybe it's just my mind playing tricks on me again. Pagod at stress lang ito. Walang kinalaman si papa rito.
"Where are we going mom?" I asked her as she continue to put powder on her face
"Sa Tita Cher mo," she replied while looking at the mirror
"Sa Laguna?"
"Yes."
I'm here sitting at the sofa on the living room while waiting for my mom to finish getting ready. I opened my purse and took out my eyebrow pencil to do my brows.
"Are you girls done? Let's go now," si papa na kabababa lang ng hagdan. He's wearing a black polo and a brown necktie partnered with brown slacks.
I stopped when I saw our car in front of me. I held my bag tightly while trying my best to remember what the car look like in the video that I watched last night.
"Fey! Why are you standing there? Come on. We'll be late."
I got back to my senses when I heard Dad called me. Vince opened the door for me. I thanked him and went inside.
I inspected the inside of the car. My eyes roamed around every corner of it. This has been our car ever since. We use it when we travel. My parents also use this when they have an important meeting or business trip to attend to, especially my dad.
Right. This car is the latest Mitsubishi expander while the car on the video was just a regular Honda BR-V.
I sighed in relief.
"You okay Fey?"
I looked at my mom and nodded. Sumandal ako at tumingin nalang sa labas ng bintana.
I can't seem to clear my mind about everything. It just doesn't make any sense. While on the road, I try to put the puzzle pieces together.
"Fey! I missed you. How are you na?"
I smiled. "Hello Fiona."
Niyakap niya ako at bineso. "Maslalo kang gumanda ah."
"Parang 'di naman," I replied shyly
"You're my most beautiful cousin ever kaya!"
"Thank you. You look gorgeous too."
She smiled and winked at me. "Oh, please. It's our genes. Tara, kain na tayo," aya niya
I followed right behind her. We sat down on a long table in their dining room. Everyone else did the same. The food were already served in front of us. The maids continue to serve us drinks.
"I'm glad you came Governor Guevarra. Welcome to our new home here in Laguna," my Auntie said with a huge smile on her face
"Thank you for inviting us. You have a wonderful home," Dad replied with the same enthusiasm
I looked at Auntie Cher. She's wearing a red off shoulder dress with matching pearl necklaces and earrings. Her dark red bob cut hair suits her. Makapal ang make-up niya sa mukha. What bothered me was how thick and red her lips are. It looks like she has lip fillers.
She drank from her wine and shifted her gaze to me. "So, Fey. Haven't seen you in ages. How have you been? You look even more beautiful since the last time I saw you," her voice was silky smooth
"Told you," bulong sa'kin ni Fiona bago sumimsim ng wine
Like mother, like daughter.
I smiled. "I'm doing good tita. Kayo po?"
She chuckled. "Feeling young as ever!"
They all laughed by her humor except for me.
"Welcome. Welcome! Pasok lang kayo."
My eyes widened when I saw Archie entered the room.
I cleared my throat. "I didn't expect Archie to be here."
Fiona swirled her glass while watching our relatives come. "Well, my mother likes to invite the whole clan. You know her. Kapag nagpaparty eh, bongga talaga. She even catered this food! Wala namang special occassion."
Binalik ko nalang ang tingin sa pagkain.
"What a lovely home you got here Cher."
"Thank you! Come, upo kayo."
"Oh! Looks like we already missed a lot. Nakakahiya, nandito na pala kayong lahat."
"Oh no. We were just getting started."
I watch them as they occupy the remaining seats. Ngayon ay kompleto na kami. I only noticed how big of a family we are. This family reunion is something else.
"So Fey, balik tayo sa'yo. Ano nga palang kurso mo?" tanong ni tita
Lahat ng atensiyon nila ay nasa sa'kin. Tumikhim ako. "Legal management. Second year."
"Oh so you want to be a lawyer then. Hala! So you're the only lawyer in the family pala."
"I guess so."
"Oo kasi mostly sa'min ay business, engineers, at politicians. How about you Archie? Isang taon lang agwat niyo ni Fey 'di ba?"
Tumingi naman sila kay Archie. He looks uneasy and nervous. "Ah yes. I'm still not sure but maybe I'll work in my father's company in the near future."
"See? It's the business world," sabi sa'kin ni tita
I only gave them a small smile before I dived into my food. They have so many topics that I couldn't really relate to. Mostly it's about their family business, money, business partnership.
"Kamusta naman yung 15 billion funds stolen from Philhealth? 2 billion worth private jet na binili? They also shut down project NOAH. The congress cuts calamity fund by 4 billion. Ang daming palpak ng gobyerno."
"Nakakalungkot lang isipin na dati ang yaman ng Pilipinas pero ngayon ay baon na baon na ng utang ang bansa natin."
"Ano? Gusto mong bumalik sa panahon ni Marcos nung may Martial Law?"
"Ang ayoko lang eh yung pinatupad nila yung Anti-terrorism bill."
"Eh bakit? Ang dami ngang nagrarally at nagproprotesta. Natural na aprubahan nila yun para lang matigil na sila."
Okay boomers.
I remained silent while listening to their conversation. Bigla nalang akong mahinang siniko ni Fiona. "May naiintindihan ka sa sinasabi nila?" she whispered
Hindi ako sumagot.
"Sino bang tutol sa Anti-terrorism bill?"
I gulped. "Me."
They all looked at me, surprised.
"Uh...yes Fey? You were saying?" Auntie said awkwardly
"The Anti-terrorism law is plain stupidity. If I know, gusto lang nila patahimikin ang boses ng masa."
"Ah...eh, pang matandang usapan ito Fey—" si Fiona
"Can you imagine? They call the Filipinos terrorist? They claimed us 'terrorist' just because we voice out our opinions? Our advocacies? May karapatan naman tayong magsalita eh bilang mamamayang Pilipino. Activism is not terrorism," I stated. "And now that they signed the bill, we could get red tagged or worst...we could get killed."
They gasped and looked at each other with wide eyes. I must have offended some of them since they work with the government. I didn't give a fuck at all.
"Why did they sign it? Because they're scared. Takot sila na mabunyag ang dumi na tinatago nila kaya gusto nila tayong patahimikin. We are not silent. We are silenced," I firmly said
Lahat sila ay hindi makapag-salita. I swallowed hard and calmed myself down.
"Ah...eh. May punto ka naman hija," pagbasag ni tita ng katahimikan. She got that disgust and unpleasant look on her face. It's like she's judging me by the way she's looking at me.
I often felt judged just because I didn't fit the society's standards of a "woman". I have a very big personality. I'm outspoken when it comes to society's issues and all and I would get comments from especially older people telling me that I'm too much, too ambitious, too outspoke, and too opinionated...and I honestly don't believe that. They tell me that's it's not attractive 'cause "women" are apparently supposed to be quiet, meek and submissive.
It's honestly so annoying. We're already in the 21st century. We should unlearn all these harmful standards especially to women. We should allow ourselves to be whoever we want to be. I saw quote that says 'If you find yourself being the bigger person, it's time to stop hanging around with small people.'
Well, it sucks to have a dysfunctional family.
I avoided their gaze. I took a sip from my wine and stood up. "Excuse me."
Umalis ako ng dining area at iniwan sila. Huminto ako at nilingon sila. I saw them laughing right now while enjoying a different topic.
I sighed and shook my head. I was about to head to the comfort room but then I caught my father talking to someone at the backyard, sa may pool area ng bahay. I found myself getting neared to them. I stopped when I saw him talking to Archie. I quickly hid on the wall. There's a glass door on the way to the pool area and I could see them clearly.
My father has a glass of rum on his hand while Archie has a cigarette.
"Did you already fixed everything Tito?" he asked
I continued eavesdropped on their conversation.
"Of course. Everything is settled," Dad answered casually and took a sip from his rum
Archie puffed his cigarette. "Ayokong makulong."
I swallowed hard while staring at him behind the wall.
Dad chuckled. "Don't worry Archie. Wala ka bang tiwala sa'kin?"
He faced my father, his other hand inside his pocket.
"I'm serious," he replied coldly
Dad sighed. "Don't worry. I got you covered. Just don't make the same mistake again," he warned in a low voice
"Fuck it!" he hissed, completely frustrated. "What if someone finds out?!"
"They won't. Umayos ka nga. Sa inaarte mong 'yan ay malamang mapaghihinalaan ka. Calm down, will you?"
"How am I suppose to calm down when..." he wasn't able to finish his sentence when Dad looked at him sharply. Bigla siyang natahimik.
Archie lowered down his head and nodded. I quickly hid behind the wall. I tried to find a place to hide 'cause once he enter, he'll caught me and he'll know that I was eavesdropping. I looked at my right and saw a door. I closed my eyes and sighed in relief.
That was close. I almost got caught.
I had a bad feeling about it.
What are they hiding? I must find out.
And so the next day, I decided to go to my dad's office.
I held the doorknobb and it's locked.
"Shit."
I tried to find the spare key on top of the door. I saw him once using a spare key. I tip my toes and searched for it.
Bingo.
When I heard a click, I slowly opened the door. I stepped inside and closed it carefully. I made sure I make no sound at all. I don't want anyone to find out, especially the maids.
I started to look for clues on the shelves, paintings, frames, on the sofa. I then went to his desk. I sighed when I found nothing. I slammed the drawer shut and sat on his chair.
I tried to open the drawer in front of me but it was locked too. I touched the keyhole then my eyes landed on his laptop on top of his desk in front of me.
Why is this here? He always brings this with him.
Nag-isip muna ako ng ilang minuto bago binuksan iyon. I'm already here so what's the point of backing out? I will not leave until I find out the truth behind everything.
I cursed when there's a password. A six digit pin.
I bit my nails as I try to think of possible passwords. I typed in his birthday but it didn't work.
Could it be mom's birthday?
Error.
How about mine? I cringed at the thought.
Another error.
I sighed and massaged my head.
I took a deep breath and stare at the numbers and letters of the keyboard. I stood straight as I typed in one by one the date when he won the election. I pressed enter and waited for the screen to load. After a few seconds, my eyes widened when it worked.
Mas nilapit ko ang upuan sa laptop. I started to click on every file I see. Mabilis ko iyong binasa at sinara kapag wala akong nakitang impormasyon. I clicked into another file and it brought me to the photos.
I saw some shots from his election together with his fellow politicians. Some photos were taken in his office. I scrolled all the way down and stopped when I saw a video. It was the only video, the rest were images. I clicked it and it was a cctv footage of a hit-and-run. It was the exact video that I watched on the news.
Why is it here? Why would he save it?
I tried to look for more information to see if I could find a much more convincing evidence. Something was still missing and I couldn't point it out. I'm almost there in finding out the answer. I just can't depend on my gut feeling.
Pumikit ako ng mariin at nag-isip.
A few days ago, Archie was here in this office. Sigurado akong nag-usap sila. And then yesterday, at the family gathering, I saw them talked again.
If only I could know what they were talking about in this office a few days ago. If only there's a-
Napadilat ako.
CCTV! There's a camera here on this office! My father had it installed whenever someone tries to enter his office. Alam ko iyon dahil marami siyang tinatago. I lifted my eyes and searched every corner of the room. I looked at the corners of the wall and saw one. It's still working because I saw the red light blinking.
I opened the drawers again and searched for something. When I lifted one of the thick folders, I saw a flashdrive. I didn't notice it a while ago.
It opened new files. They were CCTV footages here in the office. I clicked on the latest one and the video played. There I saw Archie, standing in front of my father.
"Just tell me what you did!" Dad yelled
Napayuko si Archie at hindi makasagot. I can only see my dad's reaction. Galit na galit siya.
"I'm sorry. It was an accident. I didn't mean—"
"Bullshit! Just spit it out right now Archie!"
I swallowed hard and increased the volume.
"I was d-drunk while driving and I hit someone a-and..." he paused
I covered my mouth in shock.
"And what?" Dad said coldly
"I l-left. I didn't know w-what to do. I was s-scared so I d-drove pass it," Archie stuttered
"I'm not talking about you! What happened to the person that you hit?!"
Nanatiling nakayuko si Archie. Mabilis siyang umiling. "Hindi ko a-alam. U-umalis na ko sa insidente. I...I d-didn't check if she was d-dead or alive."
My jaw dropped when Dad punched him in the face. He almost stumbled on the floor. He didn't fight back. He accepted it.
What shocked me the most when he got into his knees in front of my father. "Please tito. Help m-me. Ayokong m-makulong. Please, please. My p-parents would kill me if they found out about this," he begged like a five year old kid
"How could you do this Archie? Do you realize what you have done?! Pati ikaw ay sinisira mo ang pangalan ko!" Dad's voice thundered the whole room. He's showing no mercy towards Archie.
"Please help me—"
I looked away and clenched my fist in anger.
After all this time it was Archie! And Dad helped him?!
A part of me didn't want to believe it but the answer is already right in front of me.
I gritted my teeth while looking at Archie in the video. The audacity of this guy!
"What are you doing here?" he asked in a cold tone that sent shivers down my spine
I swallowed hard and tried to maintain my composure.
"I said what are you doing here? You're not allowed here," ulit niya at humakbang palapit sa'kin
"Is it true?"
His brows furrowed, confused. Bumaba ang mata niya sa laptop niya.
"Pinakaelaman mo ba ang laptop—"
"Answer me dad! Is it true?"
"What are you talking about?!" his voice raised
"Is it true that you covered up Archie for his crime?"
His lips parted while staring at me unbelievably. His expression turned dark. "I don't know what you're talking about. You better leave. Now," his voice is full of authority
He marched towards me and grabbed my arm. He dragged me all the way to the door. Nagpumiglas ako at nagmatigas.
"So totoo nga. May kinalaman ka nga because otherwise, you wouldn't act this way!"
I yanked my arm off his grip and turned to face him.
I sighed in frustration. "I nearly died because of you dad!"
He clenched his jaw. "What the hell are you saying?!"
"The hit and run case. May kinalaman ka roon. You're guilty. I can see it in your eyes."
"How dare you accuse me of something that I didn't do? How dare you disrespect me!" his voice thundered the whole room
I flinched. "Then how do you explain the cctv footage of you and Archie talking here in the office? I watched it alright. I saw how he begged you for help to cover up his crime. Kaya rin ba may pulis dito noong isang araw? Did you pay him?" hamon ko. "Then I saw you and Archie talking again at the family gathering. Narinig ko ang pinag-usapan niyo. So this is what you guys were hiding huh?"
Mabibigat ang bawat paghinga niya. His shoulders were moving up and down while staring at me intently. "Wala kang alam Fey kaya huwag kang makielam."
I scoffed. "I'm not stupid dad. I caught you and Archie red handed—"
Maslalo siyang lumapit sa'kin. "So what if I covered up Archie? Hmm? May magagawa ka ba? I just helped him clean up his mess," he hissed
My lips parted. "Why dad? Why did you have to do it?! Covering up a crime? Inosenteng tao ang namatay. Wala ka bang awa? Hindi mo ba naisip yung pamilya ng biktima at—"
He clenched his jaw hard. "Wala akong pake! Wala kang karapatan pangunahan ang desisyon ko!"
"But the law can. Archie must pay for the damage he has done. He can be charged guilty of the crime of Reckless Imprudence Resulting to Homicide punishable by law. He can be charged for a minimum of fifty thousand pesos as moral damages for the death of the victim plus two hundred thousand for the medical expenses and the court can sentence him to a minimum of eight years in prison---"
"I know how the law works Fey!"
Nagulat ako sa lakas ng boses niya. I can see the veins popping on his neck. His eyes were dark and intense. He avoided my gaze and pinched the bridge of his nose, completely losing all his patience.
"I'll never let you guys get away with this. This is all too much. Buhay ang pinag-uusapan natin dito. I'll report everything to the police," sabi ko at tinalikuran na siya
"You're going to report me? You're going against your own father?! Are you serious Fey? Bakit ba ang tigas tigas ng ulo mo? Ang hilig mong mangielam kahit kailan," he spat out. "Bakit? Sa tingin mo maniniwala sila sa'yo? Do you have any evidence? Hmm?" hamon niya
I swallowed hard while glaring at him.
Damay damay tayo lahat dito Fey, including you. Pangalan mo rin ay madudumihan. Pati ikaw ay apektado. We're all going down the drain kapag nalaman ng lahat. It would cause a huge issue. Better keep your mouth shut, understood?"
I winced in pain. My eyes started to water. "Dad, I-"
"Listen very careful Fey. You have no power against me. Huwag ako ang kakalabanin mo. Huwag ako," matigas niyang sabi bago ako bitawan
