Computers Are Weirder Than You Think

Okay so maybe I should start off with introductions. My name is Jacklyn. If I had friends, they would call me Jack. Well, there's that one guy though, but he barely counts.

Okay let me get something straight. Do not try what I did. You will not end up where I ended up. Got that? Okay. Let's carry on with my story. Sit back and relax while I tell you about how a game code took me to a different universe.

"Hey Jackie," said Kaitlyn.

I'm starting to think life hates me.

Today is the first day of tenth grade, and what do I get? A painful reminder that I have to endure about ten months of Kaitlyn and her little minions, Cathy and Sarah, chasing behind her.

Great. Just great.

I sighed. "For the hundredth time, Kaitlyn. My name is Jacklyn."

"Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry," Kaitlyn laughed. "Jackie."

Kaitlyn, Cathy, and Sarah ran off giggling and laughing going off to flirt with the nerdy guys to get them to do their homework.

Ugh.

Popular girls are such a pain. I remember the time when I actually got tricked into doing their homework. Hey, Jackie! Wanna study together at my house? Little did I know that once I got to her house the three girls jumped on the couch and started watching Pretty Little Liars and left me to do their calculus homework.

I remember before I met Kaitlyn and her minions, I idolized popular girls. I thought that they were goddesses and I dreamed that I one day I could be one. Then the incident happened and then I thought they were basically demons.

Anyway, I was heading to the computer programming class. I sat in my usual seat and doodling on a piece of paper I found. My friend Abdiel sat next to me as always with his suspenders, his Harry Potter t-shirt under it, and his Adidas shoes, which is honestly the only good part of his fashion sense.

"Hey, Jack!" He gave me a toothy grin. "Did you see the Doctor Who episode last night? Dude it was awesome! The Doctor was all like—um, Jacklyn. What's that post-it note doing on your computer?"

I looked up at my computer. There was a green post-it note, just as Abdiel said. The note said "03K75FEJ49."

I read the note to Abdiel. "That's kinda weird."

"Probably someone's ID number."

"Okay class," Mrs. Fuenzalida clapped her hands. "Turn on your computers. Go to that website I was talking about yesterday. If you forgot the name it's on the board."

I turned on my computer. Instead of the usual screen where you see the Windows screen, I see a black screen with a white rectangular box in middle. Above that in bright green letters said enter game code.

"Abdiel," I said, pointing at the computer. "What is that?"

"Yo, Jack you better hide the screen before Mrs. Fuenzalida sees that. You know what she does when she catches us on another website." He shivered. "What are you planning to do? Play World of Warcraft?"

"No, you idiot!" I whisper-shouted. "I just turned on the computer then this happened."

He looked at the post-it to the computer. "Why don't you try putting those letters and numbers in the box?"

I considered it. I thought Hey, what can go wrong? I typed in what was on the post-it note. The screen went blank with the exception of a gray spiral, growing bigger and darker.

"Um, Abdiel what is that?" I asked, a little worried.

I looked at him. He had a look of fear in his eyes.

He whimpered. "I don't know."

Abdiel grabbed my hand. He's always been a scaredy-cat. But then I realized why he was scared. The screen had changed to a different color, if you could call it that. The spiral had sped up, and the computer seemed to be shaking. Then the whole table started shaking.

I looked at Abdiel. He looked as frightened as I was. My gazed turned to his hands. They started to pixelate and disappear. I looked at my hands. They were disappearing, too.

"Jacklyn and Abdel, what's going on back there?" asked Mrs. Fuenzalida. She was writing some coding word on the board.

Oh great.

"Abdiel try holding down the table. People are noticing."

"Yeah I would guess they're noticing. The table and the computer are acting like an earthquake just appeared out of nowhere and it's only happening to your desk."

Suddenly, there was a big flash, blinding me.

Okay, so I don't know what happened after this. Maybe I passed out or something. I don't know.

Stupid code.

Well, too late to turn back now.
