CHAPTER 2: Should I trust you?
"Wow, that was fun!" I grinned as we returned to Valerio's apartment.
"Yeah?" He returned placing his hands in the pockets of his jeans he continued, "We should definitely do more stuff like this... maybe you could come over more often; just to speed up your training pl-"
I placed a finger on his lips, "Say no more. You just want to spend more time with me, am I right?" I asked placing my hands on my hips.
"No, bu-"
"It's just an excuse. Yeah, I get it now. Don't worry, I'll look past that," I said with a wave of my hand, "however, I'm only hanging out with you just so I can find out more info about that diary you so happen to give to me with no explanation whatsoever."
He sighed, "Fine, fine. Whatever, I'll explain it to you. But, can I ask you a question?"
"Go on."
"Can we at least be acquaintances?"
"Maybe... it's possible."
He sighed and meandered into the living space taking a seat in the nearest couch; I went to join him.
He asked as I sat down, "Can you trust me?"
"I guess so... yes."
"Then let's talk." He then placed his finger on the coffee table, which was made of glass, that scanned his finger print before he said, "Alexa, show me E.F's PDF."
Alexa's voice replied, Projection of E.F's diary is loading.
It did not take long before a projection appeared from a glass cube just above the coffee table containing the pages of "E.F's" diary. The handwriting was neat and clear enough to be easily read. Valerio's finger hovered in a motion that caused the pages to turn to the ones he wanted me to see.
While he was doing this, he asked, "Do you remember anything about ever staying or living in The Mansion?"
"I told you, no."
"The locket on your neck may help, just so you know." he sighed. I took the locket chain off my neck and touched the mechanism that caused it to open revealing a picture of:
"me! That was me when I was little, with my mum and dad outside The Mansion! This must mean something."
Valerio showed that he acknowledged my realisation by gesturing to the digital diary as a way of saying "the diary has all the answers!"
I stared at the picture which I then had a flashback:
My mum was combing my hair smiling, I was looking in the mirror and saw my reflection - I looked like I was the age of 5 or 6. My dad had just came into the room and was on the phone. My gaze followed him as he paced around the room in a suit. I smiled and his smile met mine then my gaze went to my mum - what a beautiful family (mixed families are a lot more common now than probably 400 years ago). I looked out the window and from there, I could see three unfamiliar cars parked in the familiar driveway of The Mansion in Atlanta. Frantically, I covered my ears from a sudden ear splitting sound. I could see my dad crumple to the floor in the mirror's reflection, my mother turned around and so did I. She got up to try and defend us from two tall men in black suits but she was knocked down easily by one of them. I clambered off the chair and moved to the safest corner of the baby blue coloured room. They closed in on me, their shadows growing; eventually blocking my vision. I was tied up and was hauled onto one of their shoulders. I could see my mother being tied up, blindfolded (gagged) and dragged out the room. We followed and all I could see was the wooden floorboards retreating. A bag was placed on my head. Everything went black.
"Aria," a voice called, "Aria, can you hear me?" I felt a hand clasp mine and I was restored back to reality as a tear rolled down my cheek.
I released my hand from Valerio's grip and hastily wiped the tear, closed the locket and hung the chain around my neck.
"Judging by the look on your face, you had an unpleasant memory. Am I right?" he asked.
"Yes." I sighed leaning my head back before I said, "I never ever remembered something like this happen to me."
"Memories that make you look terrified is something you can never forget. It's strange how you didn't have this memory before, but you do now."
"That's very true."
"Anyway," Valerio attempts to change the subject, "You wanna read from the diary?"
"Sure." My gaze landed on the projection of the diary.
Then Valerio asked, "Should I read to you? Or should you read to yourself?"
"We read together." I placed my hand on his which he looked into my eyes. I continued, "I trust you will lead me the right way. I believe in you - because to me, you are a friend."
I removed my hand from his and both our attention was on the projection which has a few diary pages were waiting for us. Well, we read:
22/06/2216 - My thought on my first mission in a long time; to recover B.A.I which was previously owned by me from T.O.S' clutches. It was very difficult as one of the board of directors was a T.O.S agent undercover and influenced the rest of them to vote for the new head: Sia Fortescue, my Aunt. I must go there to open her eyes to the truth of how T.O.S with the help of my sister use her knowledge to build the most dangerous weapon capable of destroying the whole nation. She's following my sister's footsteps which would eventually destroy her and everyone she loves. I must keep the company B.A.I under U.B.S.A's belt so my daughter would one day run the company...
Then Valerio turned the projection off then gave the diary back to me.
He told me as he did so, "Read when I tell you to and where." I nodded then he asked, "Do you have any questions?"
"Quite a few actually." I replied with a light chuckle.
"Ask away."
"My first question is: What is B.A.I?"
I watched as he squirmed in his seat on the couch changing leg positions as he did so. He cleared his throat, and leaned in to whisper, "I know I shouldn't be telling you the answer to this and I know your questions at this point would be tricky to answer, but you seriously need to know something about your past..." he then briefly looked around (and I saw a strand of blonde hair come loose form his falling apart gelled hair do), "B.A.I stands for British Artificial Intelligence which is useful but also very deadly now in possession of T.O.S which is holding the most dangerous weapon."
"So this person, Sia Fortescue - my relative? Were they able to use her knowledge to build this weapon?"
"Yes, she is you relative and yes the weapon was built two decades ago and if B.A.I was in the wrong hands, hell would break loose."
"Oh," I said thoughtfully.
"You know what, I feel that whoever wrote this knows who is going to read it."
"And how do you know that?" I asked intrigued.
"Ok, I want to admit something.." he mumbled scratching his head.
"Go on."
"I happen to know this person - according to this diary - I'm not saying I know her-"
"Oh, it's a her now? And how you know this?"
"She mentioned her name which is a woman's name so..."
"You happen to know her, ok. But what's her name?"
"I can't tell you that now. Ok? You're smart enough to figure it out yourself. What other questions do you have?"
I turned my head away and stared blankly out the window showing the great field of lamps of a nocturnal city in the distance. Then I started to dwell on U.B.S.A and T.O.S and how they are linked. Then I turned back to Valerio and said, "I feel like the Fortescue family - my family - is ruling over both T.O.S and U.B.S.A. Think about it; This person's sister is also a relative of Sia and what I get from all this is she works with the T.O.S and so did Sia. Whoever wrote this probably is a relative of mine too and she works for the U.B.S.A!"
"So that means that half your family is evil and the other half is good. The companies reflect that."
"Exactly! But my question is, who runs B.A.I now?"
Valerio took his phone out of his pocket and types something before he replied, "Well, according to the accessible archive app on my phone, the person who is currently head of B.A.I is Gal, your stepdad."
"Say what?! " I sprang up from my seat due to the shocking news, "A guy like him, whose dependent on alcohol would run a company?! I can't believe it! Did you know this already?"
He gave me a sympathetic smile before he replied, "You never asked."
"You never told me," I shot back, "Don't worry I'm not mad at you." I chuckled nervously with a faltering grin.
He said, "Good, because it seems you have another mission."
"To go snooping through his things; I'm going to enjoy this."

A/N Finally! This chapter is up and now we are actually getting somewhere with the story. I am typing this up during lunch times at school (they are quite short) so it took a while but at long last, it's done. That's really all I have to say.
What's your favourite biscuit?
