Chapter Twenty-Four: A Dark Reflection

A constant replay of what happened, the drowning than the flashes of Jonathan that went through Skylnn's mind as she slept. The screaming, crying, it was all so dark and painful to remember. The blonde moved around on her bed, tangled in her blankets just like that. Her heart continued to race, as things felt more and more intense until she let out a scream. One that woke her up from her nightmare, her eyes flew open as she tried to catch her breath. She flinched when seeing Jace run into her room, "Skye? Are you okay?" He asked with a raised eyebrow, walking over slowly and sitting down on the edge of the bed. He watched as Skye propped herself up with her elbows.

"Yeah, I just..had a nightmare. I keep dreaming about him and drowning in Lake. It's on repeat..." Skye replied quietly, sitting up properly and shook her head. "I feel bad for him, I escaped and he didn't. It's my fault, I should have saved him when I had a chance but instead, I kept thinking about myself." Jace reached over, taking her hand and running his thumb across her hand softly, wanting to find the right words to respond.

"It's not your fault, you can't blame yourself for this. You couldn't have known that your father would have turned him into something like this."

"But I should have, I've known my father and his intentions since I was a child. I knew that what he was doing what's wrong and yet I never thought back to save my brother when he needed me most. I failed him but this time, I am going to get him back. I was a selfish child but not anymore. We need to find him," Skye moved her hand away from Jace, removing her blanket off of her and getting out of bed. "And I know just the way to do so, I stole something from Clary's room. Jocelyn's keepsakes for Jonathan,"

"You stole it from your sister?"

"I stole it from Clarissa," She corrected rather quickly, giving Jace a look telling him to not bother on correcting her. "The only sibling I care for at the moment is the evil one," She walked towards her dresser, sliding it open and pulling out the wooden box, carved with the initials J.C. Jace remained seated, sitting there watching her.

"We can use the items to track him down,"

"Aw, look at us blondes, we're not as dumb as people think." She stared down at the initials for a second before she opened it, only to reveal the box was empty. "Should have known this wouldn't be easy,"

"You know your sister doesn't like tardiness Max," Alec stated with his arms behind his back, looking down at his little brother. Max has been training under Isabelle for some time now, and so far he's been making progress which is good news. Actually, it's great news to hear Max was doing so well. "You should get going,"

"I know," Max said with a sigh, as he turned around heading out of the room as Jace, Clary & Skye entered. Jace gave the little boy a pat on the back as he left.

"I didn't know siblings stole from each other," Clary & Skye have been going at it for a while about the whole stealing the keepsake from her, but it doesn't matter. They had lost the items that they needed in order to track down Jonathan once in for all.

"Clarissa, this isn't worth fighting me of all people about. You can argue with me later when we're not hunting down our family because they're all evil," Skye said, moving away from the redhead, and on the other side of the Jace. Alex watched this go down, it was useless for the two to be speaking about stealing such a box. They were all working together.

"Am going to assume you have nothing to use to track Jonathan?" Alec questioned, the three standing before him nodded, they didn't have much to go on. "I have some news on my own, something that will make things worse. "The Clave doesn't have the Soul Sword. They never did."

"Another lie from the Clave? Why am I not surprised." It wasn't shocking news to Skylar that things were only getting worse by the second.

"The Clave is trying to prevent an uprising. If the Downworld finds out that we don't have the Soul Sword, there would be total chaos." Alec reminded. If the downworlders knew that the sword that could ultimately be in the hands of Valentine. It would cause chaos, something that the shadowhunters did not need with Valentine on the loose and on a mission.

"But the sword's been deactivated, it can't be used on Downworlders." Clary was still learning about the shadow world, and sometimes just sometimes, Skye wished the girl sat down on her downtime and did some light reading on what they're dealing with.

"It's still a moral instrument, it can be used in other ways. For example, combine it with the other two mortal instruments to summon Raziel and ask for one simple wish. One thing he has always wanted." Skye explained, staring off for a second until something hit her. It was a selfish thought of hers, but it may help in the future if they did get their hands on the sword once again.

Another warlock close to Jocelyn was attacked once again. Clary had revealed to the others, that this warlock knew the location of the mortal mirror, and that now the person entrusted with that secret was Dot. It was her job to figure out where it was in order for the others to get to it before Valentine does.

Skye & Jace made their way towards the shop where Eliot was killed or so they thought he was killed. Skye stepped inside, only to step on some glass that made some crunching noise. She walked over to the body, who they could only assume was Eliot, the two have never seen or met the guy. She bent down, examining the body and mentally noting the blood coming from his eyes. "He killed himself, and there's been a demon in here." Jace pointed out loud, seeing from where he stood. He remained close to the entrance just in case something happened.

"He truly wanted to protect the mortal mir-" She cut off by the sound of someone stepping on the shattered glass once again causing the two blondes to quickly look over only to see it was Sebastian. "You don't sneak up on people."

"It's not sneaking up if you noticed, Skylnn," Sebastian replied, his eyes remaining on her before looking over at Jace who was clearly questioning why he was here anyway. "I got an alert from the institute and made my way over here as soon as I could. Is everything under control?"

"Well there's no danger around, so yeah everything is under control," Skye replied, standing up straight as she glanced around until her eyes landed on some dead flowers. And for a second, Sebastian suddenly felt nervous and worried that this might give away who was here. "It was Jonathan, he was here."

"So you're brother did this? Your demon-blooded monster of a brother?" Jace asked as he made his way over to Skye. "Are you still going to protect him? Skye, I can't promise if he ever shows up around you, that I won't kill him. To keep you safe,"

"You have no idea what's going on with my brother. He could be under the control of Valentine and doing his dirty work. So yes, I am going to protect him, Jace,"

"Skylnn is right, anything could be going on with this Jonathan," Not a wise move to get in the middle of this bickering between Skye and Jace but he had to step in and safe himself here.

"Jace, I swear on my life if you attempt to kill Jonathan. You and I are going to have issues beyond Valentine. He may not be a perfect little angel like you claim when you've done some nasty things yourself. He didn't choose to have demon blood, nor did he choose to be cursed with having Valentine Morgenstern as a father. I had a 50/50 chance of being the demonic one, and I know for a fact, if he was here, he would do what he could to save me," Sebastian smiled a bit to himself, at least someone was on his side unlike Jace who was trying to sabotage him.

For the first time in a while, it was just Clary and Jace with the guidance of Dot. She had a certain sight that would lead her to the mortal mirror, showing her where the lines intersected which meant that's where the mortal mirror would be. And as they walked, keeping an out for anything or anyone, Jace had shared some of his concerns with Clary about Skye's emotional attachment to her twin brother. something that Clary for once could understand, and she agreed with her sister on this topic. Why kill Jonathan when they barely know what was truly going on with him? "She's so upset with me, she went to Magnus's right after we checked the shop,"

"I wouldn't talk to you either after you threatened to kill our brother when she's expressed her true feelings and concerns for him," Clary mumbled, deciding to move forward towards Dot to walk alongside her. "Are we close?"

"Yes we are, it's right there," Dot motioned the two to follow her towards the statues that were nearby. She took a second, to look around and see if there was anything obvious but nothing stuck out to her. She lifted her hand up, and something started to glow in front of her hand. She whispered a spell,  reaching in and pulling out to what she believed was the mirror before turning around, holding it out for Clary to take. "The mortal mirror-" But out of nowhere, Jace was tossed into the air by some...thing.

The first thing they noticed is how it looked like a human who was burned, the way it breathed as if it were struggling, and those black eyes only gave them the clue it was a demon. Dot was quick to react to use a spell but it backfired and ended with her being thrown as well. Clary suddenly felt panic as her gaze remained on this...demon? It didn't move to hurt her, instead, it zoomed off holding Jace's sword against his neck.

Skye wasn't happy, she had spent time at Magnus's calming him down. There was worry about the downworlders and she honestly felt for them because it was scary. A man who hated their kind was getting closer to getting a wish that would end these downworlders, and then she had called Isabelle to check on her. Isabelle was having issues with having Max be on his own in the shadow world, and she had to make her feel better as well. The blonde was feeling particularly emotionally drained. She just happened to be close by before hearing Clary scream 'Jonathan please don't!' Which caught her attention rather quickly. She rushed over, running over to Clary and froze at the sight of her brother.

"Jon, you need to stop before you end up doing more damage than good," Skye said, slowly moving forward, in front of Clary seeing that she was holding something that looked important. Jonathan stared at the blonde and the redhead, taking in that both of his sisters were trying to help him. "If you hurt him, you're going to leave me very upset and you can't do that to me." And for a split second, Jonathan seemed to be moving away until Dot appeared using her magic to knock him down. Jace used the time to stand up quickly while Dot opened a portal.

"Go now! You need to protect the mortal mirror!" She spoke to both of the girls in an urgent manner, Eliot didn't die for nothing. They had to keep the mortal sword safe at all cost and if that meant sacrificing herself then so be it. Skye tried to move forward towards Jonathan until Jace wrapped his arms around her, whispering that he was sorry for this but he had no choice to force her to leave along with Clary through the portal. He meant what he said, his goal was only to protect her no matter.
