Chapter Twenty-one

The master corrupted's eight eyes flickered around the room, focusing from Laura's stunned face for a brief second before settling on Blake. He opened his mouth, grinning maniacally and allowing her to see both rows of needle sharp teeth. "So Paladin, are you ready to accept your fate and die?" He barked. Instead Blake just knelt down and stared at the floor. He chuckled, she was going to go quietly. Good. He raised a clawed fist and chuckled. He had won.

It happened so fast Blake doubted that the Master even knew what hit him. The Master corrupted stumbled backwards, howling in pain. Blake lunged forward and stabbed him once more with Emily's knife. She had only knelt so she could pick it up. She rolled backwards as his hand slammed into the ground. She sprang to her feet and stabbed him again, making sure she twisted the knife as it entered his slimy flesh. She yanked the knife out and grabbed Laura's hand. They sprinted towards the door, pushed it open and ran blindly through the opening. Outside Narisa was alone and busy trying to keep a small corrupted away from her. Blake stabbed the monster from behind and yelled for her to follow them. Together they ran through the maze of corridors, closely followed by the sound of claws and the bellowing of the Master corrupted.

After over a minute of running they found themselves outside, the sun had just begun to set and a thin layer of clouds covered the horizon. Blake led Narisa and Laura through the twisting streets of the inner city. Ahead she could see Jackton, who was trying to run whilst carrying Pip on his back. Blake pulled ahead, managing to reach them. "Let me take him." She gasped. Jackton simply nodded and, with some difficulty, transferred Pip from Jackson's shoulders to Blake's arms. Behind them the corrupted were gaining. Blake didn't dare look, but she could imagine them, scrambling over each other as they tried to keep up with their fast, muscular Master. Blake could see the entrance to the outskirts now, and slightly further than that the blurry outline of Isaac was beckoning to them. He stood in front of an entrance to the underground. Blake forced herself to move faster, her arms aching from the wound in her shoulder and the strain of carrying Pip. The rest of the group were in front of her, she was falling behind. Sudden panic gripped her, she wouldn't make it if she was carrying Pip. But Pip couldn't make it by himself unless someone kept the corrupted occupied. She could drop him and get away! As she thought it over, guilt began to rise in her chest. She had lived her life, his had only just begun. She had to make up her mind. Slowly, Blake loosened her grip on Pip.

Laura reached the entrance to the underground and tumbled awkwardly inside. Laying flat on her back and breathing heavily, she looked up, expecting to see Blake rush in carrying Pip. Instead, all she saw was Pip running towards them, clutching a worn journal. Laura looked past him and her heart skipped a beat. Blake stood holding Emily's knife as the swarm of corrupted poured towards her. Laura couldn't help it. She screamed as Blake was covered by the oncoming wave of creatures and hidden from view. She turned to Isaac, expecting him to run out and help. Instead he started to heave the heavy stone door shut. "What are you doing! We have to help!" She screamed. Isaac turned, she could see the beginnings of tears form in his eyes. The door closed with a loud crash. "She's gone Laura." He whispered. "She's gone."
