Chapter Thirteen

Blake jogged down the tunnel, making sure she kept her hand on the left wall. Instead of heading straight for the exit, she made the decision to try and get closer to the wall so as to avoid most of the corrupted. Blake felt bad about not telling anyone she was basically going on a suicide mission, but it was for the best. The last thing she needed was a bunch of people dying on her behalf. That would make her feel even worse than she did now. "Concentrate" she told her self. She didn't want to miss her turn. Blake stopped when she felt the texture of the wall change before waiting for the echo of her footsteps to fade. They didn't. Blake immediately dropped to her knees and gripped her knife. Whoever was following her was going to wish they hadn't.

Even in the darkness Blake immediately realised it was Pip. She'd leapt out and pinned him to the floor, only to hear him giggle like they were playing some kind of game. "What are doing here?" She demanded. He just giggled again. "I wanted to come with you! Please let me come!" He pleaded. Blake sighed, it was obvious that she wouldn't be able to get rid of him without letting the others know what she was doing. "Fine. Just hold my hand and don't let go." She commanded. Pip enthusiastically nodded his head before he reached out and took her hand. They continued on down the tunnel for sometime before Blake decided it was time to stop and take a break. "Blake?" Pip asked, tugging her shirt. "Yes." She replied, staring at the opposite wall. Pip paused, as if deciding what to say next. "What are the monsters?" He whispered, like he was scared of what he might hear. Blake fell silent. She didn't want to tell Pip that tells monsters used to be people. Even if he didn't understand now he would eventually. Blake shook her head. "I don't know." She lied. They sat in silence for some time, until Blake decided that she should take Pip back before she set off. She helped him to his feet and placed her hand back onto the wall when a shrill scream pieced the air. Instinctively, Blake grabbed Pip and ran towards it. Someone was in trouble. Her mind raced, what if a corrupted got in and now everyone needs help? Suddenly, she felt something smash against her head, sending her toppling over onto the cold, rough ground. She just managed to push Pip out of the way before she was struck again, this time much harder. She covered her head with her hands, feeling the blood seeing from and open wound, warm and sticky. Her vision blurred, in the darkness she could make out the outline of a girl lying motionless on the floor. Laura. Blake fought to stay awake, forcing her eyes to stay open as she was hit repeatedly. Then she saw it,the withered face of an old lady, spit flying from her mouth as she hissed. Blake couldn't see anything anymore, the last thing she heard was a cackling voice wishing her "sweet dreams" before her world faded to black.
