Chapter Seventeen

Blake glanced around the corner and motioned for the rest of the group to follow her. So far they hadn't encountered any corrupted, but from what they had been told they could never be too careful. She began to move down the street, ignoring the creaking from inside the buildings on either side of her. Other than that the only thing that broke the silence was the steady thump of their footsteps. Luckily Narisa and Isaac had the sense not to bring the horse, but Blake kind of wished they had. Her shoulder was on fire, pain shooting through her body every few seconds reminding her of the gash in her flesh there. She could really use a ride. "So. What's the plan?" Isaac said behind her, making Blake jump. "Don't know. Probably something completely reckless." She admitted. Isaac just shrugged. "So, where is everyone. I mean, why are we the only people out here, and where is the army?" He asked. "Probably hiding. Or they evacuated. Or they're dead." Narisa offered. Blake shook her head and frowned. Everything was so quiet. It wasn't like she was looking for a fight, there was a high chance that if they were attacked then the kitchen knife she had to defend herself would do little to protect her. Benny jogged up to them, breathing heavily. Blake offered to take a turn carrying the sack which was slung over his back but he refused. She shrugged. Blake smiled as she listened to Jackton as he tried to stop Pip from talking. Despite the uneasy feeling she had Blake couldn't help feeling somewhat happy. The feeling vanished almost instantly. At the back of the group someone screamed.

Blake wheeled around and her heart skipped a beat. A corrupted with pure white skin was busy tearing the flesh off of someone at the back of the line. The beast looked up and bared it's teeth, allowing Blake to see the pieces of ragged skin and blood hanging from it's mouth. This stunned her into action. She yelled and pushed Narisa, who slammed into Isaac's back, forcing the rest of the group into a run. "Keep moving" she screamed, grabbing Pip's hand to get him to move faster. Behind her she could her sounds of pursuit. The albino corrupted howled like a dying animal and it launched itself towards them. Blake heard Jackton yelp as the corrupted smashed into the floor behind him, narrowly missing his back. Ahead Blake could see what looked like an inn, the door hanging from it's hinges like someone had forced their way in. They had no other choice. She pushed herself to move faster, dragging Pip behind her as she forced her way to the front of the group. Hoping that the others would follow her, she bolted inside the building.

A few seconds later the last person leapt inside the doorway. Blake slammed the door shut, leaning against it as the corrupted tried to force it's way into the inn. Pip sat on the floor crying while Narisa tried to comfort him. Blake turned her head angrily to face them. "Shhhh!" She told them. She turned back to the door. Outside she could hear the unmistakable scratching of claws against wood. It was trying to get in. Eventually the noise stopped but Blake didn't dare take her back off the door. Instead she slid down to the floor, continuing to make sure that there was no way the corrupted could get in through that way. A few meters away Isaac sat on a rather rotten looking flight of stairs. "We just can't seem to catch a break today, can we?" He pondered. Blake just nodded. Narisa walked in from another room. "One thing after another." She agreed. Isaac was about to ask what she meant when a loud sob erupted from the room which Narisa had just come out of. "What's going on?" Isaac said without looking at her. Instead he allowed his head to roll around lazily on the step above him. "Its nothing." She assured them. "Pip's just a bit shaken, that's all." Blake couldn't help but laugh. In all this madness she couldn't believe that Pip was still alive. Isaac smiled. "You want me to take care of the door, you look like you could use some rest." He offered. Blake nodded and with some effort got to her feet. Her shoulder ached and when she moved it felt like someone was pushing hot pins into her flesh. They swapped places and she trudged upstairs. After a little searching she found a room that hadn't already been taken and flopped onto the bed. She closed her eyes and at last Blake fell into a fitful and uneasy sleep.
