Chapter Fifteen
Laura was sure she was hallucinating. Narisa came over to her while the rest of the group climbed in through the broken window. "How did you find us?" Laura asked as Narisa untied her. "Simple!" Narisa grinned, pointing to a dog which had just been carried through the window by Jackton. Everyone was inside except for two people. "Mari and Wes, where are they?" Laura asked. Narisa looked straight at her but didn't answer. They hadn't made it. "Blake!" Laura shouted, suddenly remembering. Isaac and Benny were already over in the corner. Cautiously Laura walked over to join them, afraid of what she might find. Thankfully it wasn't as bad as she had expected, Blake was already half awake, but she seemed disoriented and confused. She mumbled something, though it was inaudible. Laura shook her head and looked at Narisa. Blake tried again, this time she managed to get the message across. "Since when is Benny a medic?" She muttered. Laura turned to watch Benny, suddenly realising he was wrapping a bandage around Blake's injured shoulder. He shrugged. "Before he died, my dad was a medic. He used to get me to help out." Benny admitted. With one hand he secured the bandage and with the other he pulled out his pipe. He paused before he put it in his mouth. "Look, I know you guys think I'm stupid for smoking. The truth is I am. It was my way of rebelling against my dad. I messed around and got addicted." He sighed and slipped the pipe back into his pocket. Something on the other side of the room crashed to the ground with a loud thud. All heads turned to see Jackton struggling to hold a table above his and Pip's heads. Isaac did little to hide his laughter as he went over to help. Blake seemed less amused. "What are they doing?" She inquired. Narisa rolled her eyes. "We're in the inner city, we've already lost two people and the streets out there are crawling with the corrupted. What do you think we're doing?" She asked. "We're blocking the windows so none of the nasties can get in." She sighed and looked down at Blake. Laura watched in amazement as Blake struggled to her feet and stood in silence. Something was wrong. "If, they wanted to get to us, then they would have already done it." She looked around, focusing for a second on each of them. "So, why haven't the corrupted got to us already?" Realisation dawned on everyone's faces. A deep, raspy chuckle broke the silence. "Because, we don't need to rush if we are already inside."
