Chapter Eleven

Blake watched in horror as half a dozen Corrupted poured in through the shattered window. Several people screamed. Blake spun around just in time to watch General Kip fall, buried under bloodthirsty monsters. "Underground!" Blake screamed, hoping that either Narisa or Isaac would understand what she meant and get as many people out as they could. It seemed to work, as Isaac grabbed Narisa and began to shout for people to follow them. Blake ran forward, dodging the swipe of a corrupted's claw and grabbing the fallen General's sword. She tried to ignore the fact it was sticky as she continued over to where the king had been standing. The king himself had disappeared, but Laura stood completely still in a state of complete shock. Blake grabbed her arm and pulled her towards the door. Nearly everyone else had already gone, and as a result of this Blake and Laura became the main target. It wasn't long before they were running down a cobbled street, but Blake could hear the corrupted close behind them. If they wanted to get away, Blake realised that they would have to move faster. The stables. She made a sharp turn, almost pulling Laura's arm out of it's socket, and headed straight for the fifth stable block. Without missing a beat, Blake kicked down the door, startling the majestic horse inside. With an unplanned sense of pride, Blake realised that this was her horse. 'Great time to get big headed' She thought to herself. The howl of a corrupted brought her back to the bleak reality which was unfolding. No time for a saddle. She jumped onto it's back "Get on!" Blake yelled, turning to Laura. Dutifully, Laura obeyed, slipping gracefully into place behind Blake. The Corrupted reached them just in time to be trampled. Only one managed to dodge, spinning in place and immediately launching itself into the air. Blake turned and threw the General's sword, hitting the last of their pursuers square in the chest and sending it sprawling backwards in a rain of it's own blood. Blake kicked her horse, forcing it the go faster. They shot through the gate into the outskirts, leaving the screams of the dying corrupted behind them.

Laura clung to the girl's waist as they sped down the narrow streets of the outskirts. She tried to blink away the tears as she thought about her father, but they just kept coming. "It's gonna be ok." The girl in front of her said. Laura wanted to believe that, but she knew that her whole life was beginning to fall apart. It wasn't long before the horse began to slow down, trotting towards a dead end. Laura watched the girl jump down and walk up to the wall, pushing against it. A section of wall opened up like it was a door. Laura watched the girl disappear into the shadows, and soon after the horse began to follow. Laura could hear herself whimpering as she was swallowed by complete darkness.

Blake walked down the pitch black corridor, one hand on the slimy wall and one hand clamped around the horse's muzzle. The air was musty and stale, and with each breath Blake wished she was outside. She could hear sounds up ahead. Hopefully it was Narisa and Isaac, otherwise they would be in trouble. If it was a gang... It didn't bare thinking about. She reached for a knife, only to realise she didn't have one. It had been confiscated by the General when she'd started training. The only thing she could do was keep moving and, if it was a gang, hope that they would except peaceful negotiations and not resort to violence. As they got closer the muttering stopped. "Blake? Is that you?" Came a voice from out of the darkness. Blake sighed with relief. It was Narisa. "Yeah." She answered. "It's me." She had reached them now, and could see Benny furiously trying to light a match. On around the sixth attempt he finally had success, the tiny flame casting eerie shadows which danced on the stone walls. For once him being a smoker seemed to have come in handy. "See you brought the horse." Isaac noticed. Blake rolled her eyes. "Nothing gets past you, does it?" She uttered, turning to help Laura off of her steed. She turned back to the matter at hand. "How many made it out?" She asked. "All of us! All twelve." Someone at the back of the group exclaimed. Blake nodded. "We should go back to our old place. We have weapons and supplies stored there, remember?" Isaac stated, begging to move through the crowd in the opposite direction. Blake wasn't listening. If all twelve of them made it, plus Laura then there should have been thirteen people standing here. Blake's blood ran cold. "Why, can I see fourteen people if there are only meant to be thirteen?"
