Chapter Eighteen

When Blake awoke she wasn't sure if she was actually awake. The room she was in was almost pitch black. Slowly, she said upright, trying to ignore the pain which shot through her body. She winced and let out a quiet whimper. If she didn't get this treated properly soon there was a high chance she would develop an infection. Blake slid off the bed and trudged downstairs. Isaac lay in a heap next to the door snoring loudly. Blake rolled her eyes and stepped over him. She noted with some satisfaction that he'd barricaded the door with a table and some chairs before he'd passed out. She headed into the kitchen, skipping over Pip who had also fallen asleep on the floor, and opened one of the cupboards. She pulled out a piece of bread and took a bite. She hadn't realised how hungry she was. Pip stirred and opened his eyes. "Good morning!" Blake said brightly, passing him a piece of bread. In the corridor outside she heard Isaac groan followed by a large thump and he hit his head on something. Blake pulled out more bread which she put on a plate, before setting both on the counter. It looked like everyone was beginning to wake up.

When everyone was up Blake decided it was time to share her plan. Jackton had just managed to get Pip to sit still when she finally spoke up. "Guys, I have an idea of what we should do, but I think we should hear any other plans first." She told them. Narisa coughed. "The safest thing to do would be to go back into the underground and try and find a way to get out of here." Narisa suggested. "Unfortunately, it won't work...the problem being that the corrupted will find out how to get in eventually." She concluded. The overall mood of the room worsened. Laura turned to Blake. "So what's your plan?" She asked. Blake was silent for a moment before she spoke. "You won't like it, but we need to get inside the castle." She told them. Benny looked at her like she was insane. Everyone burst into conversation, mostly telling her that she was crazy. Blake held up her hand and waited for silence. "Hear me out." She turned to them. "Look, I don't want to go either, but I have a hunch that this 'master' we heard about is the corrupted's leader." She sighed. "If I had my journal then I could check to see if I made a note of this master before, but I left it in our room back at the training grounds." Suddenly Narisa looked very guilty. "Ummm, about that..."She said, picking up her quiver from the side and rummaging through it. "I didn't think it was important, I just saw that back in the outskirts you used to take it around with you sometimes. I thought you might want it." She pulled out a battered notebook. Blake was speechless. "Well that was convenient!" Beamed Isaac as he passed the book to her. Blake flicked through the worn pages until she came to the page she wanted. She slammed the journal onto the table. "I knew I'd heard of the 'master' before." She whooped, delighted by her good fortune. "Look at this."

Blake ran through the empty alley, clutching a piece of bread and screaming with happiness. Her mum and dad would be so proud when she got home! Blake kept running, unaware of the creature following her. She dashed into her house, but nobody was there. She shrugged, her parents could do what they wanted. She dropped the piece of bread on a chair and grabbed her notebook and a pencil. She began to draw, the angry salesman and the boy she'd met on the way there. She wished that she had a green pencil, she wanted to add colour to his intelligent cat like eyes. Blake sighed and scribbled the name he'd told her underneath when she heard a loud thud on the door. She jumped to her feet, her parents where back. She flung open the door and yelped in surprise. The young boy was covered in cuts, his skin already turning black. Blake screamed and kicked him backwards, she knew what was happening to him. He was becoming one of them. The boy held a knife in his hand and winced. His mouth opened in a silent scream as his jaw dislocated and blood dropped from his eyes. "Master." He groaned as though he was in some kind of trance. He shook his head, then turned to face Blake. He held out his knife, his hand shaking. "Kill me." He told her. Blake didn't hesitate, she drove the knife deep into his skull. The boy slumped forward, except he wasn't human anymore. Blake stared at the dead corrupted, tears in her eyes. Her mum came pounding down the street and embraced her. Blake hugged back. She would never forget what had just happened, never.

Blake stared at the words which had been scrawled on to the page in black ink. Never forget. She had forgotten that day until just now. Isaac looked over her shoulder. "What do you think?" He asked her. She stood in silence for some time. Why hadn't she seen it before. It was so obvious. Everyone was staring at her, waiting for an answer. "I think...I think we need to get to the castle."
